This has been one of my favorite neighborhood restaurants in Birmingham for nearly a decade. My husband and I used to live nearby when we first moved to Birmingham and went all the time. Now we live further away but still drive over because of how much we love it. I will say, we’ve never really tried any of their big seafood entrees — we usually stick to the sandwiches because they’re so good and have such a great price point. The monte cristo and the fried green tomato sandwiches are my favorite. And the fried pickles are a MUST! The atmosphere is small and very casual, but I think it’s cozy! They have a good beer selection and some outdoor seating. It’s not great for groups, but definitely works for tables of 4. It’s usually busy but not overly crowded.

The most friendly service around, and the the best crab cakes in Birmingham by far! The shrimp and grits and fried green tomatoes are also a must try.

VERY disappointed today… I’ve eaten here before and it was really good but not today! I ordered a wedge salad and it was terrible! A big part of the lettuce was BROWN and wilted! There was hardly enough left to eat. Very, very disappointed! They should never serve brown and wilted lettuce! I’m sure someone else got the other half fresh and this was the 2nd half… who knows how long they had it!!! Yuck!

I am so disappointed. I have been looking for a new place to try for quite some time and my husband loves hamburgers so based off the reviews I thought this would be the perfect place. When we arrived first impression was how small it was. But I’m from a small town so small restaurants don’t bother me a bit. We opened the door and were greeted so nicely by the guy and girl that were working. They weren’t that busy so we got to chose where we wanted to sit. We chose to sit outside since it was a gorgeous day! The girl quickly brought us our menus and asked what we wanted to drink. We sat for 23 minutes with no sign of our waitress. Never got our drinks nor did we get our orders taken. I think they just forgot about us. We got up and left and it wasn’t even noticed that we were leaving. I was so excited because the menu and atmosphere seemed amazing. I don’t know if we will return for a second try :(

Second try and we won’t be back. Drinks were awful(Crosshaven martini and Pump House Fashioned) and expensive. Drinks are in line with Flemings prices but no where near the quality. Probably the worst drinks we both have ever had. Food is mediocre, but not good enough for the price.

Bought a salad. Came out with iceberg lettuce and a sub par piece of over seasoned tilapia on top. If you want to pay high prices for southern style food that you could get at any Mom and Pop establishment this is the place for you. I feel ripped off. The night before I ate ate Jackson’s and ordered their ahi tuna with wasabi Caesar dressing and it was fabulous!!! I must add that these salads were same price as this gross plate of cheap, unacceptable food. Service was marginal. It was overcrowded(because it’s a tiny building) with no where for guests to wait for their tables. I will NEVER return. I honestly feel ripped off at the moment!!!

Very good food and drinks. Small seating area, so they fill up quick. We have become regulars here and always enjoyed our selections. The menu has a little bit of everything so you can come often and get something different every time.

Take it: service was pretty good(seated immediately, authentic & fun, checked-in on meal at least twice, accommodating for doggy bags), comfy environment(if you like sitting near others providing a neighborly feel), cool location(nice neighborhood w/nice homes and downtown area), fried green tomatoes(definitely world famous, not just thrown on a plate, they are specially presented), catfish and grits(huge servings… huge! crispy batter, creamy grits were seasoned perfectly… the south does this very well), burger(huge, fresh, and delicious) Leave it: parking(I don’t think there’s a solution based on location do you can’t really hold it against them, but its annoying, they acknowledge it w/humor and move on w/good service), fries(if they were boardwalk style, I’d reconsider), comfy environment(its tight, not sire if this can be helped either but if you like personal space, this will be an issue), deep soft drink cups/not so long straws… you’ll get it. Verdict: I’ll be back to taste their craft beer selection(plentiful), love the location, friendly staff, good service, great menu items!

I went here with my son for an early dinner on a Sunday afternoon a couple months ago. We walk in and literally stand for a solid 5 – 7 minutes before anyone acknowledges us. 2 servers walked by without even making eye contact. Finally the bartender says sit anywhere you like we will be with you in a few. I ask if we can sit outside, he says sure. So we go sit outside. Not for the view(nothing pretty to see and they use the patio for storage of kegs and everything else apparently) but because the weather was gorgeous. A server runs food to another table and goes inside without acknowledging us. Someone else comes out and talks to 2 other tables and doesn’t acknowledge us. I go inside and ask the bartender if we can get a server and some menus. Very annoyed. Same server comes out and hands us menus and leaves. We review and decide to order crab cake appetizer, kids cheeseburger and a pasta dish. 15 minutes later server gets the order. If you enjoy crab cakes, don’t order them here. Or order them plain. Trust me. I don’t know why crab cakes need to be drowned in a full cream sauce and covered with an entire can of sweet corn, but it’s gross. And expensive to be gross. The kids burger and fries was great. My son liked it, and I tasted those fries, they were perfect. The pasta dish I had was good. Nothing award winning, nothing I couldn’t have made myself at home, but not terrible or disappointing. I was hungry for pasta and this hit the spot. Service was terrible. Patio should be made presentable for customers. Crab cakes should not be ruined with dill cream sauce and canned corn. Maybe we went on a bad day. I’m sure we will give it another go eventually since it’s close to home. But for now, 3 stars is as generous as I can be.

Came here once last year. Looks like regulars go there and like it a lot. Being a new customer I didn’t feel appreciated. The waitress looked like we were wasting her time ordering a meal because we wanted to split it and just have one beer each. I mean, we were just checking it out being new in the area… too bad we aren’t going back there. Our neighbors think we should give them another try… hmm we just might.

Wow, this place feels like home. Plus the best brunch in Birmingham! The food is wonderful, the staff will learn your name, and the ambiance is full-on community. I think I’ve eaten nearly everything on the menu and I still struggle with ordering because it’s all so good! But my favorite by far is the Sunday brunch. A new menu shows up every Sunday and it is killer every single time. Items such as s’mores french toast or crab cake eggs benedict have been featured recently and were knocking socks off everywhere. Head over there immediately and see what Cahaba Heights is talking about.

I have been to Mudtown on several occasions and this last one might just be the best yet. Just to set the scene: Mudtown is a tiny cajun inspired restaurant dead in the middle of Cahaba Heights. It can get crowded from time to time. But the food is consistently good and a nice selection of beers on draft. I chose to go with the American Animal Burger. Something I believe is new on the menu because I have never seen it before. It comes with fries on the burger, an egg, and a sauce they compare to In-N-Out sauce. Since it has been a while since I have had In-N-Out, I can’t speak to the exactness of flavors. But the sauce was incredible delicious. I requested the my egg be a little on the runny side so those flavors could meld… and I am so glad I did. The fries and meat soaked up the yolky goodness covered in the sauce and boosted this burger on my list of great one’s in Birmingham. There are plenty of other great things on their menu that I have had before. It is definitely a spot to check out if you haven’t already. If you have, then I am sure you are already going back!

I’ve tried a few things, but nothings truly hit the spot. Nothing spectacular about this place nor does anything really stick out. Mediocre food, good service though. Parking can be a pain.

This place is killer! I will definitely be coming back here! The food was excellent and the service was super! I ordered the«Cahaba Chicken Sandwich» with a side salad. If you look at the recent photos, I posted a picture of what the side salad consists of. My ONLY complaint about my experience here was the side salad. Let’s be honest Mudtown, it was pretty weak. The Chicken sandwich was absolutely delicious– great for a light meal! My friend ordered the«Shrimp and Grits» and it was one of the best things I have ever tasted. Super good. His wife ordered a burger and it was AWESOME. Not just your average hole in the wall diner food; surprisingly super super good! We came here based on the positive feedback based on their Unilocal reviews and it definitely lived up to the hype! If this is your first time coming to the restaurant, be weary of where its location. I had to backtrack twice because I kept missing the location that was given on the Unilocal app. The restaurant looks like an old two story house and is located on the top level of a couple other businesses that sit below it. Overall — I will def be coming back here! Highly recommended for a quiet evening with family and friends!

Awesome time at Mudtown tonight. Christine was a great waitress and was super knowledgeable about the menu. We received a complimentary fried pickle appy since it was our first time there. We also had the fried green tomatoes with their white sauce Which was very tasty with some zing. For the entrée I got the shrimp and grits which Christine recommended and it was GREAT! had enough spice in it to keep me thirsty too. The grits were very flavorful and there were plenty of shrimp and sausage. Great atmosphere and service. Presentation was average but at Mudtown, presentation isn’t the draw… It’s the food and atmosphere that made this place great!

Oh, dear! My expectations were probably too high. Our party of 8 showed up on a Sunday, sixish, and we were immediately seated. So charming and such friendly greetings by the staff! Menus delivered and drink orders were taken immediately. Nice alcohol selections, and they serve Pepsi products, which my peeps love. Smoked wings tasted more like smoke-flavored-additive wings — meat was just not smoky enough to convince me otherwise. Fried pickles were overdone, but they softened up in the delicious white sauce. Dinner was a roller coaster of very good(shrimp & grits, buffalo chicken fingers) decent(burgers — but one of the buns had to be replaced because it had been over-toasted to the point of being a dental hazard, and a pleasant Philly cheesesteak), and then the disappointing(over-breaded and over-fried rubbery shrimp, and thin, barely detectable overdone fried green tomatoes and mahi mahi that was also overdone). Fries were not a big hit, either. This meal left us wondering whether there was a new cook in the kitchen or if those 5-star reviews that brought us in were for the shrimp & grits. I’m just a bit disappointed that I didn’t get the shrimp & grits. I hope we just caught them on an off night. The charm is there, and they’ve been around a while. Best wishes!

I’ve drove by Mudtown many times and thought how nice a beer on the patio would be. Well today we made the trip to Cahaba Heights all the way from Irondale (note sarcasm) and we parked on the huge hill(nonexistent) and tried Mudtown for lunch. We opted to sit inside since it’s was a bit warm. Inside is quaint with many tables fit in there so it’s a great place to listen to conversations and check out what others are eating. We got 2 draft beers and may I add I was impressed with the beer selection. We started out with the fried green tomatoes and they were thick, crispy and hot aka awesome! The menu has many yummy options to chose from I went with the Jamaican Pork Sandwich it was hot, soggy and flavorful. It wouldn’t hurt to add a bit more jerk to it for that extra kick. The apple cider slaw is a great topper on the sandwich hence the soggy bottom. My boyfriend got the Monte Cristo that is his sandwich. He said it was good(looked great) but didn’t top his best list for Monte Cristo. Although he did enjoy it and we both look forward to returning and trying a few more dishes. Thanks for a great lunch see ya sooner than later!

I came here for a post-church meal and decided to take advantage of the brunch menu. I got the chicken and waffle sandwich which was so delicious. Crispy chicken, bacon, and Gouda between two waffles, served with a side of syrup and home fries. It was very good, and I’d like to go back and try some of the non-brunch items! The restaurant itself was very small with no more than probably 15 tables. Service was quick and friendly as well! They feature a lot of craft beer on tap, and have an extensive list of mixed drinks(including mimosas and Bellini for brunch). I highly recommend Mudtown, and will definitely be back in the future to try out some different menu items!

Sometime you order the Alfredo style meal and regret it less than halfway through… not at Mudtown! Great spot to hang on the porch with a. Bud, watch the thunderstorms and have dinner. Our waitstaff were attentive and friendly, the food was extremely good, and the beers were cold. Add to all of this the reasonable price and we’ve got a winner!
