The blackened halibut was fabulous! But everything else was mediocre. Except the waitstaff was good.

What an amazing first time here! After reading all the reviews I had to test my wife to dinner here for her birthday! They did not disappoint. The feel of the restaurant was cozy, and there’s a but like an old ship. Everyone that works there had a smile on their face which made you not want to leave. Now the food, which words and even pictures can’t do it justice, was fantastic. The prime rib just melts in your mouth, the baked potato tastes like it just cane off a fresh camp fire wrapped in foil, and the monster lobster tail which is the biggest I have ever seen. This place is amazing, great food, great environment, and amazing and kind people. Do not pass this up, and as Arnold would say, I’ll be back!”

We’ve been here twice, once in Nov. 2014 and again in Oct. 2015. We loved it here both times we had dinner here. There is a plenty of parking and very easy to get to. The place is rustic(and I mean that in the best way). When you are dining here, you FEEL like you are in Big Bear! The first time we went here, we were seated near the fireplace on the main floor. We had the $ 19.99 three course dinner, which was excellent. We had a wonderful waitress who was very attentive. The upstairs was closed, but she gave us a flashlight and let us check it out. The second time we went was in October and the place had a fall feel to it. We were seated upstairs right in front of the fireplace, decorated for fall. I ordered the salmon, which was excellent. Once again, the service was great. This place has a lot of history and is very cozy, and they have a resident ghost! This is a MUST place when you travel to Big Bear and I will make it a point to eat here EVERY time I’m in Big Bear!

We eat here everytime we visit Big Bear. The food is good. Pricey but good. Not happy with the management and the way they do things. Wouldn’t let us eat our meal in the bar at a table so we could watch the baseball game. We could eat on a barstool but not a table even though there wasn’t a soul in there. Irritated me to the point where I wanted to leave.

Romantic ambiance. Warm & cozy fireplace. The freshest seafood in town. Flown in! Known for their clam chowder. Nice soup & salad bar. Prime rib cooked just right! I will be back!

Really great birthday dinner experience. Got the prime rib and enjoyed the salad bar and tomato bisque(and our baby loved the freshly baked bread). Very friendly service and reasonable prices for large portions of good quality food. Ask for ghost stories about George!

We have wanted to try Captain’s Anchorage for over a year… finally got there last night. The ambience is wonderful! The owner, Patty, greeted us and we heard great stories about her dad who originally bought it. As far as food… FAR exceeded our expectations! I rarely order prime rib but all 4 of us had it… YUM. It was a buttery texture, cooked perfectly, and wonderful flavor. Salad bar, baked potato and the bread all amazing too! We will definitely go back!

VERY good food. I’m surprised to see one star ratings here, but I suppose every restaurant has a bad day, though none worth a single star. The environment is warm and cozy and the food is delicious. The service is attentive and charming; definitely this restaurants best quality. The only criticism I have is that the red wine was a bit cooler than I enjoy, but that’s hardly a reason to forgo this restaurant in the future(and barely a quality worth mentioning). I’ve been here several times, and I will be coming back every trip I make to Big Bear.

I came here for dinner with family from out of town. the prime rib was delicious and cooked to perfection. everything was so clean and the interior is beautiful. My waiter was wonderful and helped with anything we needed while he was training and busy. Definitely will be back. love the salad bar they have so you can pick what you want and it is served with fresh bread and soup! Amazing place here in the mountains

Came here mostly for the ghost story — the kids dug it! First off, the water was REALLY good! I ordered the prime rib, and it was fine. The kids got kids prime rib(a thinner slice), and it was okay(but not as good as mine.) The important thing was that they ate a lot of it! My wife’s filet mignon was fine too, and the salad bar was good. Wasn’t a fan of the soup bar, but overall, we left full. Nothing that I’d crave again, but it was nice to sit down after hiking all day!

My husband and I dipped in here for dinner. The entrance is very narrow so be warned. We were seated at a table by the kitchen and unfortunately were right next to the loudest most obnoxious group of guys ever. We ordered the shrimp diablo to start. There were only 3 shrimps with our order which is kind of skimping on the food for the price paid but it tasted SOO good! The jalapeño was spicy and the bacon had an awesome grill/char to it that really set the flavor right. I loved it! I got the prime rib and my husband got the lobster tail. The lobster tails are usually 8 — 10oz and it was HUGE! He loved it! My prime rib was perfect, juicy and tender. Solid place to grab some dinner.

One of the old timey classics in Big Bear so that already gives it a thumbs up from me. It’s a small, old-fashioned restaurant that kinda feels like it hasn’t been updated in decades. I love old school Big Bear, though! As far as the food goes: great fish and tons of selections. Apparently everyone here orders the prime rib. Salad bar is okay, but nothing spectacular — just serves as a small side to go with your entrée.

Okay, where do I start… I really wanted to give them a 5 star. But, overall… they were not. Lets break it down. Service — was O-kay. Restaurant — small, dark, and crammed. Seats — uncomfortable. They sat 4 of us at a booth. All our knees were touching. Food — It was average. Not big portion like I’ve seen some of the photos that others have posted.

Hi, I had a bunch of water before I came here. It is a restaurant. There is a kitchen. There is seating with chairs. There is a floor. I took a shower before I came here.

My in-laws were friends of the late owners of Captains Anchorage, a couple who were well loved in Big Bear as well as «down the hill». Despite yearly visits, however, my spouse and I never managed to dine at Captains Anchorage — although not for trying. We had taken a pass on dining here during prior visits after hitting Captains Anchorage at the height of dinner hour when the wait was nearly an hour thanks to the crowds this place draws(the main dining room is small). This year, though, we lucked out. We had the entire dining room to ourselves on a Tuesday night. We enjoyed not only our meal but trading stories with our server(who is also a bartender there). My spouse and I ordered the prime rib special. We agreed it was THEBEST prime rib either of us have ever had. The salad bar was also great. I’m allergic to carrots and typically salad bars are a great disappointment because carrots are a fixture of salad premixes. This salad bar had all the fixings without the carrots mixed in. And, as a clam chowder fan, I was not disappointed either. Every year my spouse and I look for a new place in Big Bear to celebrate our anniversary. We dined at Captains Anchorage early on in our stay but next year we know exactly where we’ll head for dinner on our special day.

I came here right after my first ever snowboarding experience, so… i was I hungry! There is a salad/soup bar available, but you can only make One trip so that was a LITTLE disappointing… Now time for the reason that i’m here, the entrees. I got the white fish with this amazing pesto sauce and the boyfriend got the prime rib. I was very happy with my order and would recommend it to anyone that enjoy seafood. Boyfriend’s prime rib tasted really good also. Only pointer i’d add is that if you’re someone who get motion sickness and you’re planning on driving down the mountain right after dinner … don’t order the dish with pesto sauce. It was wayy too oily and the return trip very miserable. but obviously this is not the restaurant’s fault. I gave the place 5 stars instead of 4 is b/c i feel that for the price, the décor needs a little renovation.
