Very good! Better then your low end Mexican restaurants in the area. Very good menu with inventive items. Things I’ve never seen in a Mexican style restaurant. Each member of my party got a different item and we sampled each. They were very good, just short of amazing. I will definitely go back as j love Mexican style food and this is in my opinion a premium place to get it. I’ve had better though at the smaller locally owned restaurants. But chain wise this place is worth it. I do agree with the other reviewed that their service left much to be desired. Our waitress wasn’t that’s good, but I wouldn’t hold that against the place.

Always been one of our favorites since moving from Texas. They closed Cozumel’s so we don’t even cheat on the place anymore It’s the go to place for my wife and I to get away. We like sitting in the booth’s right off the bar. Yes, every restaurant my have their bad day or waiter or waitress that just doesn’t get service but they are cool 90% of the time. We have had some great personality’s serve us thru the years

Tonight was my first time trying Abuelo’s and I loved every moment! From the greeter, to our food everything was wonderful! The waitress Paula was very pleasant and a great addition to their establishment. She had a kind soul. I’m from the south and if she is that’s great hospitality. She made you feel like you were right at home.

We had wonderful service here and the food was excellent! Our server was Paula, and she went out of her way to make sure we had a wonderful dining experience! I ordered the gluten free pork fajitas and they were delicious! We’ll definitely be back!

This place sucked. Service alone justifies the review. We went for my aunts birthday. It took half an hour just to get drinks, which were not filled up all the way and was mostly ice cubes. The good was not tasting right, with my tacos being flavorless. The rice was okay. One star.

Gross. Service was marginal and the food was nasty. You can look at the pictures and see its gross. Slop thrown on a plate. Pass.

What happened to this place? I moved back to the area after being gone for six years and I would expect a restaurant like this to advance instead of going in reverse. Mediocre service and what in the heck happened to the salsa portions. They now serve teaspoon size salsa portions. What a joke this place has become!

We are a group of high school friends, who have for the past six years next month, have dined out together every third Monday of the month. This was our first time at Abuelo’s and will be our LAST!!! We have NEVER had such terrible service! Our waitress was quite unattentive and when she did visit our table, she got orders wrong, didn’t refill our water glasses or bring our drinks, which we asked for several times. She even told us the frozen swirl margarita machine had messed up and was having to refreeze. The manager seemed to have no knowledge of this! One of our party was not asked what she wanted to eat. Another member was ordering and the waitress went to her other table while she was still ordering. REALLY!!! I asked her three times for another Skinny Margarita and it wasn’t ever brought. Two of our party ordered food from the«Happy Hour» menu when we all ordered and were told 30 minutes later that they couldn’t get the food unless they were sitting in the bar area. SHESHOULDHAVEKNOWNTHISWHENTHEYORDERED!!! As the clock ticked away, with her no show, I phoned the restaurant to request her presence. She came and we asked for to-go boxes & tickets. She wrote down each of our orders to make sure the tickets came out right, and she had them wrong not once, twice, but three times! At this point, a few of us were so upset that the thought of walking out was seeming to be a pretty good option! I mean, to take an hour to correct tickets is outrageous! My friend sitting next to me said that after all the trouble we had had, that we should speak with the manager about the issue. She and I went to see him and found him attempting to help the waitress straighten out our tickets. I expressed our dissatisfaction about the entire dining experience and that we were requesting compensation, and he offered to take care of our meals. This was greatly appreciated, but could have been avoided had the waitress been properly trained! We blame both the manager, first and foremost, and the waitress for a terrible dining experience, and you can rest assured that we will NEVER return to Abuelo’s again even though the food was great! There was blame being put off on everyone in the restaurant and our waitress went so far as to say that everyone there tonight was new. SERIOUSLY!!! To the management: fix your issues or close!!!

what has happened to this place? AT one time this was one of my favorite restaurants but over the past few years the quality of food as well as service has gone down to the point I no longer go there.

The salsa and the slices of chicken yet again save a horrible meal. It all looked disgustingly old and dry and was very much flavorless. Filet Mignon looked like it was throwaway meat served with a nasty grease sauce, the refried beans looked like a pie crust with cheap cheese melted on top of it and the rice was moist(surprisingly not dry as it looked) yet void of flavor. The tea tastes old and the service wasn’t good. Took a very long time to get our food despite an almost empty restaurant packed with employees and she stopped by every few minutes to ask if everything was okay. Came over to check on us: how is everything? Oh a refill? Sure! comes back almost immediately: how is everything? Not to mention rudely interrupting us as we asked questions. Used to be nice place but the food is bad and the service is bad. How did they stay open this long?

Food was real good! Nice atmosphere, good place to take a lady friend! If you trying to get her drunk don’t get a margarita, it’s pointless, but otherwise it’s great will be back

I’m not usually a real fan of Tex-Mex type food, but this place hit the spot! I often drive by and have been meaning to stop in, today I finally did. The three salsas and chips they start you out with are excellent, as well as the habanaro salsa they’ll bring you if you like hot! I had the avocado enchilada and cheese chile relleno, and boy were they good. The avocado enchilada was great! Was a little pricey for a lunch special but was well worth it. My fiend had the seared tuna and enjoyed every bit of it. We ordered cheese dip and was greeted by a huge bowl of yellow cheese, a lil different than most cheese dips at mexican places but this was chile con queso, not the best but got the job done, I honestly couldn’t quit eating the salsas they were so good. I’ll be back on another pay day!

Came here on a weekday at 8pm and sat at the bar. The place was emptying out. The bar staff was fun and engaging and they liked working with each other and having fun. Service was good. I ordered as suggested the pork medallions wrapped in bacon along with two enchiladas, one chicken with cream sauce one beef with spivey queso. Wow! It was delicious and big proportions. The spicy queso has some kick. Also, the chips and salsa were very delicious. They feature three sauces: I didn’t care for the sweet sauce but the regular and spicey sauces were very very good. Can’t go wrong with Abuelos. It’s on the higher end of Mexican without paying a lot and the food is very good.

Excellent décor and excellent service… excellent fajitas… but bad salsa flavors(they give you 3 and we didn’t like any of them). Thin and boring queso dip as well! Everything was of the utmost freshness but… I ordered the grande burrito and it was too too salty… but other than that it was good.

I liked the atmosphere, the décor didn’t seem to match the type of restaurant but perhaps it is channeling a vibe from Spain. Any who, the happy hour shaken margaritas was well worth the price ‚$ 6.50 for 1800 is decent, it poured about 3 martini glasses. The spinachi mini chimis were nothing more than southwestern eggrolls… that eas disappointing. The dip sampler was good. I had the ribeye and it was excellent! It is very seldom I order a steak I don’t have to season at the table. I can’t really speak to the enchiladas as I didn’t have enough room. It came with steak, mashed potatoes, churro beans(excellent) and two enchiladas. But I assume they were good as well because my doggie bag was absent the fridge in the morning. Lol. Will definitely be placing this restaurant in my rotation. I have passed this place hundreds of times and hate I waited this long to try. On a side note, my friend had the sea bass, and it was yummy and also a nice portion size. I will be having that next time.

I try ALL Mexican restaurants and find authentic Mexican to be the best. This is more of a chain. Salsa is delicious. Queso was the fake orange color. Quesadilla was pretty bland. I say this is typical chain food. I won’t be back.

Very few places absolutely blow my mind but Abuelo’s did not only that– it blew away my picky hubby. First off the décor– this place looks gorgeous and very cultured. We knew it was going to be a bit more expensive than our usual fare and were gambling it’d be worth it. Our hostess was also fantastic. She brought us salsa and started giving us tons of cool info about the different salsas. Hubby is Mex and I cook authentic Mex at home so I knew most of what she said but I didn’t know that the spiciest one has habaneros in it. The waitress also informed us that we can trade any side for any other side and that they are very accommodating here so we can alter our meals as needed. Hubby decided to get the chicken menu sampler– The Monterrey with beans and rice. It comes with a bunch of different things and he swapped one thing out for a ground beef enchilada(though I don’t remember what he swapped out). I took a gamble and got the Sautéed Chicken Zucchini extra spicy with Papas con Chile and Cilantro Lime Rice. The only thing I was surprised I didn’t like was the Chicken Ranchero Enchilada because for some reason their grilled chicken tasted odd. But it may have just been that one night. When we did come back we tried some more new things. I noticed the fajitas had an option with pork in al pastor sauce and had to try it. It was fantastic! Next time I come back I want to get some enchiladas as I realized I enjoyed hubby’s enchiladas the most. The flan tasted great but the strawberry that came with it didn’t go well with it. Note: The little computers at the table were cool but not very useful when it came to coupons. Our waitress had to manually enter our coupon at her station. It all worked out but it’s a good note to make. Loved: — Avocado Enchilada — Carnitas Enchilada — Chicken Enchilada — Charro Beans — Cheese Chile Relleno — Chili con Queso — Espinaca Casserole — Fabulous Fajitas Pork Tenderloin — Fajitas de Steak — Guacamole — Mexican Rice — Papas con Chile — Queso Diablo — Refried Beans — Sautéed Chicken Zucchini(extra spicy)(my fav) — Sour Cream Chicken Enchilada — Tortilla Chips Liked: — Abuelo’s Dip Sampler — Fajitas de Shrimp — Fideo con Pollo(hubby liked) — Guacaomole(plain– just avocados) — Salsa Verde Disliked: — Avocado Cream — Chicken Ranchero Enchilada — Cilantro Lime Rice — Crispy Chicken Taco — Enchiladas Itzel(hubby liked) — Green Chile Pork Burrito(hubby loved) — Ground Beef Enchilada — Habanero Salsa — Nachos Grandes — Raja con Queso — Pasta Mojo de Ajo(with salsa inferno added; hubby liked) — Salsa Rojo — Shredded Beef Enchilada — Stuffed Chicken Medallions

Best crispy corn tacos(ground beef) in town — we have been trying these at numerous east Shelby County restaurants — these are fresh and tasty. My wife gives them the highest score possible with 25 out of 25 score. So far they are first place in the Memphis Taco Challenge.
