I’ve always liked this place — food’s good, service good, its clean, etc. But you know its a great place when they go OUTOFTHEIRWAY to make things right. There was a mix-up on the wait list. We were a little upset — the place was crowded and busy and we had two little ones with us. Let me just say, they went above and beyond to make things right. Whatever the gesture, it’s nice to know they pay attention to their customers. This is STILL one of my favorite places, and YES, I’ll be back! Thank you!!!

I think this place is decent enough. We tried the avocado fries — the dip and the seasoning is just really good. I tried the cauliflower steak(Interesting enough how they name it). The poached cooking style gives the cauliflower a combination of different textures.

10 minute wait to seat you when there’s open tables. No thanks. Moving on. when this was a local place located in Hyde Park it was less corporate vibe.

Stopped for Saturday brunch. We really enjoyed our migas, omelette and coffee. The egg dishes were tasty, fresh veggies were used and not so heavy on the cheese, so not greasy. Fruit sides were fresh but a little past prime and still good to eat. Fresh coffee. Wait staff attentive and polite even as the restaurant started to fill up. We will be coming back.

Went here for brunch on Saturday. The food was ok, except there was an eyelash on my plate, and my eggs benedict and potatoes were cold. Not just lukewarm, but cold cold. Normally I hate complaining, but it was inedible. I asked the waitress to get me another. My replacement plate came out in about 5 minutes– which was nice. Still not hot, but I was hungry so I ate it anyways. I think the Duval location is better. I wouldn’t come here again.

Hyde Park has long been a favorite lunch and brunch spot. We were thrilled when they opened the location in South Austin, which we patronize every couple of months. I was surprised to check in on Unilocal today and see they only had three stars. Some observations and recommendations to make the most of your visit: Food: Fries come out fresh and fast, so they work great as an appetizer. I ate them most recently with no adornment, because I was craving the salty carbs after a morning workout. I wish HP still had the eggplant sandwich with tapenade, but times change, and there are plenty of other tasty vegetarian-friendly options. The lentil soup is always available. Most recently we had the Belgian waffles and migas for brunch(yes: after the fries. It works). Service: Attentive and responsive to requests – want salsa that doesn’t come with your dish? No problem. Want that aioli that comes with fries with another dish? They will make it work. Atmosphere: lots of booths, and requests for them are honored. Someone is always cleaning the floor – appreciate the cleanliness standards.

I have given this place multiple tries and each time I’ve gone it has be subpar. After my last visit I will be making sure I never go back. Our waitress, bless her heart, was horrible. She brought us multiple things we did not order… The food is mediocre at best. Her long fake nails also touched the food… So gross. Their chicken fried French fries, what should be the best thing on their menu since they’re «known» for it, are not good. Seriously go somewhere else, Austin has so many other better options.

I was pleased to find that they have a decent selection of gluten free food. Unfortunately, that didn’t extend to the salad dressings. Why does honey mustard dressing have gluten in it? Why is there gluten in the dressing for the asian salad? Makes no sense to me! We had to ask for more water.

One + 4 star is given for(excellent) hospitality from our waitress. Food: –5 star, Boxed mashed potatoes and frezzer burnt green beans. Chicken fried steak was fair but small cultlet with way too much breading… cold gravy! Thumbs down on the Meatloaf. Had been one of our favorite spots. at one time. Downhill!

I have been going here for some time now since I have moved to Austin. They never fail in delivering a quality meal with some really awesome service. So I just keep going back. I absolutely love their iron skillet catfish with cornbread and black eye peas.

We live in the area and frequent Hyde Park Bar & Grill often. I’m a bit confused by all the negative reviews. The menu does change on occasion, but it’s usually seasonal changes. They’ve got a wide drink menu and a slew of daily specials that offer up variety and great deals. My husband and I love to go every other week to get a great meal and to enjoy the diverse crowd. Hello, we live in South Austin, if one is to venture to this bubble then one should respect the strangeness you may encounter. That said, let’s get to the food… Our faves, definitely include the HP fries. My husband personally loves the salmon or the encrusted tilapia. I love their great, enormous salads. Always fresh, tasteful veggie filled salads with homemade dressings for the side. We have tried everything on the menu once. But we stick to what we love. The spinach salad with blackened chicken and homemade honey mustard dressing is my fave. My kids(and yes we have kids we bring inside to the restaurant) I noticed some people weren’t happy with children eating there… but our kids are kept quiet and behave lovely. That said, they love their homemade macaroni and cheese and the chicken tenders, all fresh and hand battered. The servers we’ve had are all so nice. But what we are most impressed with is the manager at this location. He is always making sure tables are cleaned and people are seated and taking care of, even on those crowed weekend nights. I’ve worked many places and I’ve never seen a restaurant manager working so hard. It was evident he values his workers and doesn’t see it beneath himself to buss tables and clean them. I was so impressed by him and loved that he wasn’t sitting at the host stand or standing in a corner just observing. He was definitely a worker bee! We are thankful to live in South Austin and we love having HPB&G so close by to enjoy when we are ready for a nice dinner or lunch or some delicious cocktails! Also, try the Pain Killer or their margarita!

So not good. The atmosphere is good, but the food is way too expensive for the portions or flavor. I had the chicken salad sandwhich on a GF bun w/green beans. My husband had the chicken breast w/GB & fried cauliflower. The chicken salad sandwhich was small, didn’t have much flavor and the portion of meat to bun ratio was horrible. The sandwhich on it’s own was $ 7.99 and the gf bun was an additional 1.00. The sandwhich was sooooo small too. Now the chicken my husband had was probably 4 oz, but the GB were not even steamed enough. They were still hard and bitter flavored. The cauliflower was tasty, but again not worth it. The waiter was very nice, and the building is pretty on the inside. For $ 28.99 the food was a waste of money. Maybe there are other dishes that make this place awesome, but unfortunatly we didn’t have the experience of awesomeness that some other have had. I would say read all these reviews and then make a judgement for yourself. I will never be back to try again.

We visit Hyde Park all the time. Love it! Always sit at the bar and the bar tenders are great. But today who ever they had on did not compare. We waited 30 minutes and he still hadn’t deliver my ice tea or my husband’s Coke. We hadn’t been given menus and were totally ignored. He had however served other dinners. When leaving still having received no service I asked for the manager. The manager did not show. Will probably not be calling this our favorite restaurant in future.

A very busy Wednesday night might have kept this from being a better review. The wait quoted when we got there if 15 minutes wound up to be 25. We started with a couple beers and a south Austin margarita — that was overly sweet and over priced. You have to get the HP fries so we got an order as an app. They were hot but not crispy so lost appeal quickly. The small basket was enough for 3 for sure. It then took 24 minutes from the time we got the fries till the entrees came. The Sonora salad had more than enough lettuce but lacked in all the other toppings.(One small piece of hearts of palm could be found). The pork and Mac and cheese seemed to be the best of the 3 entrees in presentation. The cauliflower steak was small and all core and stem. And soggy. The flavor were good — but it lacked heat and depth. The lentil bed was like warm and watery from the ‘steak’. Server was friendly but never checked to see how meals were. We did flag down at very beginning to get a little more hearts of palm. This is still a good place since there are vegetarian options etc. but was poor on execution.

Although none of the food here blew us away, everyone in my party left full & satisfied. They have a wide range of food options and a great bar. I’d describe the vibe as upscale Austin-Hippie. Had a great experience with our waitress. Would definitely come back.

BESTFRIESINAUSTIN — MAYBEINTEXAS! The Hyde Park Grille has been a bastion of burger excellence since 1982, and 35 years later is still going strong. The HP Classic is a delicious burger of fresh beef chargrilled for that lovely smoky flavor, served on a house-made brioche bun with sweet caramelised onions and tangy house made pickles. And the fries. OMG — double fried but not greasy at all, seasoned with big chunks of kosher salt and served with a side of their famous fry dipping sauce, made daily on site. YUM — a bucket list item, these fries. Service is fast friendly and efficient. Two people at our table split the HP Classic and an order of fries, and it came neatly cut in half in the kitchen, on two plates — ANDWEDIDN’T HAVETOASK. Come on the weekend for brunch, but there may be a brief wait if you come before regular lunchtime.

I don’t know what happened in the year between writing my last review and now, but it’s seen a significant drop in quality. My biggest complaint is that things don’t seem to be made to order. The last few times I’ve ordered and gotten mashed potatoes, they were stiff and seemed old. I just can’t adequately put words on how disappointed I am again.

This is one of our go to places when we visit Austin, the food is really fast, and is true comfort. Our 4year old grandson eats the Mac and cheese like a vacuum cleaner with teeth, and I am no slouch on the chicken fried steak. I wish they served the gravy in a bucket it is just that good. Try the tempura veggies wit garlic aoli if you want a real treat

Lunch Nov 17 Best French Fries I think I have ever had! And the fries dipping sauce was definitely decadent — didn’t need any ketchup at all. I had the Fried Egg/Ham & Cheese sandwich. I added Bacon, but it would have been stellar without it. A very unique and tasty sandwich if I do say so! In my party, someone got the Reuben and said it was as good as any he has had in NY — I don;t eat Reuben’s so i will take him at his word. The salad that someone got at my table was very large for lunch and looked perfect. Not sure if this is a dinner destination, but for a lunch outing it sure hit the spot!

The meal that never was. We entered the restaurant at 11pm Saturday night. A couple people lingered at the bar, at least two tables were seated and eating. It was, slow. The bartender greeted us from behind the bar and told us to take a seat anywhere. We picked a booth and he brought us menus. After browsing the menus for a few minutes, a waitress(?) appeared and this is where the story gets… interesting. «Folks, we can’t serve you tonight, the kitchen is already closed.» Since they don’t close until midnight, I immediately assumed the kitchen staff had finally gotten the call that their retro dubstep bluegrass cover band had finally been signed to a major label and they quit en masse, right on the spot. Part of me was happy for them, but I am a curious sort, so I asked anyway. «Aren’t y’all open until midnight?» Remember, when I mentioned that we arrived at exactly 11pm? That’s what you call foreshadowing, folks. The waitress seemed annoyed by this question. She replied defensively. «We are trying to change that. We haven’t had a customer for an hour and half. We can’t make money that way. The fryers are off.» «Uhm, oh. Okay.» And that was that. We set down our menus and shuffled to the door like a retro dubstep bluegrass cover band who showed up to their first big gig and was turned away because one of the Mumford sons felt like«they kind of disrupted the harmony of the opening acts». It felt sad, but we had a good chuckle about it in the car and went to another restaurant. I am giving two stars because I believe had we been allowed to eat I would have enjoyed the hibiscus tea and been delighted by that peach dessert thing.

This restaurant is exactly what it is claiming to be. Good service, clean, friendly, with good comfort food! We enjoyed the fried chicken, real mashed potatoes, country gravy, side salad freshly baked biscuits and to top it off, Macaroni and Cheese! Everything was good and served with a smile in a timely manner. We have no complaints! Enjoy this restaurant for what it is! Want comfort food in a family friendly environment, this is the place!

Who is reviewing this joint…3 stars average not even on a good day can imagine this being remotely possible. #1. The smell. As we entered, there was a distinct smell of fried /burnt fish. But it was a Friday, and perhaps there were Orthodox Catholics having dinner #2. The service. Our waitress was 5 stars. She was attentive, nice, and anticipated any questions we had. #3. The food, appetizer. The onion rings were recommended as an appetizer, and we originally thought this was a «brewery restaurant», so onion rings it was. The onion rings were the highlight of the meal #4. The food, main course. My husband had the«Friday special» which was a pulled pork served on «Texas Toast» — what they forgot to mention… It also included the most disgusting collar-greens, that left a terrible aftertaste that lingered for hours … Listerine finally provided some relief. Also the pork was dry, served without any type of au jus or BBQ sauce to help the situation. I had«roasted chicken and broccoli». OMG — flash fried frozen chicken ‘filet’ in fishy /old grease — was disgusting! The broccoli was also flash fried … Yuck! #5. The drinks. Wide selection of beer and wines #6. Other patrons. There were no less than 4 screaming kids at any give time. Overall I would classify this place, as an upscale Denny’s «wannabe» — but with disgusting food(and Denny’s is pretty yucky) At the end of the day… Our tastebuds were abused, and we paid $ 65 for food(+drinks) that were inedible DONOTWASTEYOURMONEY or ABUSEYOURTASTEBUDS … You would be better off going to Denny’s! LOL

There is nothing I enjoy more, than sitting at a Hyde Park table for brunch. A hangover in one hand. A black coffee in the other. A load of their famous«shared» fries in my mouth. And three groggy women laughing about whoknowswhat. I’m being sarcastically facetious about one of these. Serioulsy though. I have been frequentling Hyde Park Grill for what seems like twenty years now. Is that right? Damn, I’m old. I digress. Listen, it’s never a disappointment. Oddly, consistent. Yet, aptly priced. I can say this with certainty, that since I moved closer, I will be going to this location a lot more often. Also, look for the waitress with the immaculate nails. She was a godsend on a particular Sunday morning.

I seem to remember my first trip to Hyde Park being at more of a 4 star review level. I had brunch and I remember it being very well done. Then my second trip was a struggle to find something on the menu that gave a wow factor. I ended up ordering something like chicken fried steak and was incredibly underwhelmed. The third time was the charm in solidifying my distaste for this place. The third time started like any other restaurant visit. I noticed there was outside seating. It wasn’t very hot outside and I really wanted to sit in the fresh air. I wandered up to the hostess and the only words spoken by either party were her stating«Twofollowmethisway.» As we were led into the dining room, I realized that my hopes of sitting outside had gone away. Next was the waitress. I’ve never been in awe of the staff here, but my waitress on this visit was a low-talker almost worse than the Seinfeld episode. If I didn’t know how the waitress and diner game was played, I would have to just walk out. I couldn’t understand a thing she said. Again the menu was underwhelming and I couldn’t figure out what I wanted to eat. I ended up getting a burger with some of their award winning, yet mediocre fries. It was a decent burger, but I couldn’t finish it all. I was sent into a spiral of depression and couldn’t wait to leave.

I have been a fan of Hyde Park ever since I moved to south Austin! It was one of the first places I remember going to eat at with my roommate at the time and she was a huge fan and a member of their diner’s club. I have had brunch, lunch and dinner here many times and have always left with great food in my belly and a smile on my face! I love the atmosphere here, it is very relaxed and chill, but nice at the same time. The patio is great and it is a great place to catch some live, close up music. I also love that from about November through January or so they have up the gorgeous lights hanging off the building. It is a beautiful site. I get to see it almost every day since I drive by on my way to work. I love their special battered fries and the sauce that comes with them — yum! Numerous times I have ordered the Reuben. I keep getting it so it is clearly great! I have had several other things off the menu too and they have all been good as well. I also love the hibiscus mint tea — so refreshing. If you haven’t been to Hyde Park it is a great spot that is surely to be a hit for the family or any group. Since this place is so close to work my boss always takes our visitors out here. Their menu is pretty big and anyone should be able to find something on the menu they would be interested in. Go here if you haven’t been!

I would actually give this place 3.5 stars but that does not exist yet on Unilocal… I go here because there is little wait for brunch on weekends, I can get my eggs benedict for under $ 10, and the mimosas are tasty. I would really only come here if I was really hungry and needed a quick fix. The food isnt great, the atmosphere feels really bland BUT it is cheap and there is good service. Skip the HP fries and chips and queso — wasn’t a fan of the HP burger either. Actually the food isn’t awesome — just come here if you are in a bind and want to go easy on the wallet. Going to HP doesn’t feel like a fun brunch affair. It feels like IHOP. Very mixed feelings about this place, but I guess I will be back.

We decided to try this place out, because I had gotten a notification for $ 3 off Chicken Fried Steak on Texas Independence Day. First off we ordered the chicken fried steak and they were out so we opted to try the Chicken fried chicken. It tasted good, but we were disapointed because we really wanted the chicken fried steak. We also ordered the Avocado fries and they were awesome. Highly reccomend them. I am interested to try their regular fries at some point. Our server was very nice and fast. The beer selection is also very good.
