Food good but the live music makes eating or talking to anyone including the staff impossible. And the constant passing the basket for the bands tip makes you even more uncomfortable I stopped going. Sorry for a Cajun boy that is sad!

This place was a shot«right-between-the-eyes». Food so good makes you want to slap yourself for not being here before today. LEGIT creole food. If you like Jacques-Imos in NOLA then u understand creole-soul food. COMEANDGITIT

Atmosphere was very good. They had live music playing. The food was delicious! I ordered the po boy shrimp sandwich, I did have an up charge for butterflied shrimp. Our waitress was great too! DEFINITELY coming back!

This spot never disappoints! Our whole family loves to come here for lunch or dinner; we try to bring new people here also, whether or not they know if they like Cajun food our not!

A favorite. Excellent cajun food! Outstanding service. There is sometimes a wait to get in, but you will not be disappointed. It is good, no doubt about it. The place is intentionally an Austin dive with cajun-junk décor. It’s all tongue-in-cheek, which appeals to us! It’s okay for you to go there, but don’t tell anyone else. .. it already gets crowded. :-)

I was really excited to try this place, it has been on my list to go to for quite some time. I live up North so I rarely find myself down South. However, I made a special trip down South to get some Cajun food. I’m beyond in love with Boudin, so of course I ordered the Boudin. It was good, I feel like that is hard to mess up on. If you have it on your menu for a Cajun restaurant you already winning with me. I got the burger lunch special though on the recommendation on the server and I definitely do not have the same idea on it as her. It was probably my mistake to not get something cajun here, but it was a very terrible burger. It was dry and just not appetizing. Seemed like a frozen patty to me. I would not recommend you go eat that. The fries were just as bad too, so stay away from both. I also ordered a side of onion rings and it was okay, they are like a take on shoestring onion rings, not bad but also not the best onion rings I’ve ever eaten. I wouldn’t say go out of your way for those. However, the dessert is what is giving this place three stars and the service. Although the server and I didn’t feel the same way on the burger, she was extremely nice and friendly and attentive. Back to the dessert, the Pistolette, is bomb! You must get that for sure if you find yourself here! It was amazing! Totally worth the wait for that. This place is located in a strip mall so you have to fight other shop goers for parking spots, but it shouldn’t be too bad, the place did get very crowded for a weekend lunch, so you might or might not have a wait. There is indoor and outdoor seating. The décor is very Lousiana-y.

Absolutely fantastic food. Love the fried crawfish poboy with gumbo. Fast and easy. I usually pick up and bring back to work. Just great home style Cajun food. Can’t ask for more!

Actual rating: 3.5 Evangeline Café is totally not what I imagined it to be. I came in Friday during lunch expecting a cute, little quaint café. That’s pretty much what it was — but very NOLA style. The décor is very busy, and it makes you feel like you stepped into Louisiana. I ordered the #5 lunch special: regular po-boy with side of gumbo. Gumbo: 4/5, mmm I’ve had gumbo that I have liked better. I’m not really sure what great gumbo tastes like, but this was pretty good. No complaints about it, but I wasn’t like WOW! This was amazing. Regular fried crawfish po-boy: 3/5, this was severely lacking in flavor. The first bite I took(which was all bread and lettuce) was actually pretty good, but I must have been really hungry. As I kept eating the po-boy, I just kept thinking how flavorless and kind of disappointing it was, since I had been craving a po-boy for awhile. This lunch special was a pretty good deal, portion wise for 7.75. However, I would recommend trying out the other lunch special deals or just ordering from the regular menu! I would probably come back again, just not anytime soon.

This place is ridiculous. Ridiculously fantastic, that is! I am a newbie to the creole world, and was introduced to Evangeline’s by a friend who I will thank for the rest of my life. The atmosphere is divey and super laid back. They have live music most nights and the décor is super fun. But the most important? GATORBITES. Y’ALL. These crispy, tender things drizzled with a delicious, spicy, cream sauce are incredible. Hit them with a little lemon, BOOM! I’ve had a few entrees here, however, the Shrimp Creole is my go-to. It is total comfort food! It’ll warm you right up with a little kick! You MUST try this place!!!

Bases don some previous reviews I would concur. Service was quick & at times seemed kurt. But the food was good. The gator bites were hot and spicy. The chic & sausage gumbo wasn’t bad either. They have bread pudding but unable to provide a whiskey or rum sauce though it does come with a caramel sauce. Don’t ask for ice cream either.

After seen this place on the Austin chronicle, I decided to come and check out. When I got here the staff was friendly, and I was seated quickly. I ordered a beer and some appetizers. The appetizer was something I never I tried before. Frog legs. My meal was delicious seafood gumbo. The place had a nice atmosphere. Reminded me of eating at a restaurant in New Orleans. The gumbo had just the right amount of spice. The only downside was the commute there.

Whoo Boy! IMHO there is no better Seafood Gumbo in town. Just the right amount of seafood and kick. The lunch specials here are reasonably priced, and the customer service is awesome. I recommend opting for the house favorites, it’s always good. I gaarantee it!

This is good Louisiana food. The crawfish etoufee was excellent. The oysters contraband was out of site and hot. Try it. I’ll be back

Such a fun, crammed, divey, musical little spot. Despite booking 8 of us were crammed found a table designed for four — but it worked. The wings are great, everything I sampled from the rest of the menu is fine(Nola style food just isn’t my thing — I’m never going to wax lyrical about gumbo or red beans and rice — it all tastes basically the same as far as I can tell) But the atmosphere is what makes this place 4* — even on a end of month Thursday it was heaving, music volume was perfectly pitched, the band were good and the staff, although run off their feet, were friendly and accommodating and never let my glass run dry. Wine and beer only at the bar — but their Chillean Sav Blanc is very drinkable. Which all made for a golden tinted evening. We’ll be back for midweek revelry sometime I’m sure!

I’ve tried just about everything on the menu and it’s all excellent. Speedy’s catfish plate and their fried catfish are my top choices, but you can not go wrong with anything on the menu. Added bonus… they have live music most nights.

I wish I had known about this place sooner. Evangeline Café feels like I’ve stepped into Louisiana. I had a fried crawfish po’boy and an Iced Tea. Top notch! Evangeline Café will definitely have my business in the future.

My friend and I found ourselves here on a Tuesday evening before 7pm. The place was loud inside and had a few seats available outside. The night was a decent temperature so we opted for outside so we could hear each other talk. It appeared there was a band that plays around 7pm. They had just started to get set up when we had arrived. I scanned the menu and ordered a Abita turbo dog beer. It was a bit of a heavier beer but delicious all the same. Louisiana’s finest. Due to the crowed we waited a little bit longer for our meal but we hardly noticed due to our conversation and people watching. A very interesting crowd to say the least. My grilled shrimp po boy with evangeline sauce came out with a side of french fries. My friend ordered the alligator sauce picante. My po boy was lacking in flavor and just seemed plain. I was very disappointed since the reviews were high for this place. I tried a bite of my friend’s meal, alligator picante, and was it was very flavorful and spicy. My fries were okay but I think I would have liked the chips with evangeline sauce better. Anyway, I doubt I would eat here again but I could see myself maybe checking them out in the future because of the band.

The place is located in a pretty unsuspecting strip mall in South Austin, so I was surprised to see how packed it was on a weeknight. I also enjoyed the New Orleans feel you get once you walk inside. The staff was friendly and helpful, but the food was just average. I had some friend oysters and a salad while my friend ordered the Evangeline pasta with crawfish. Both were decent, but I did find our portion sizes a bit small, and we were both still a little hungry afterwards. In an area with other comparable Cajun restaurants, I would probably pick Cypress Grill or Stuffed Meat Market over this one.

Wonderful Cajun food in southern Austin! The atmosphere is fun, warm, and entirely decorated with all things Louisiana, hobbies, and famous autographs. There’s live music in the evenings and the service is nice and attentive. It feels great to be checked out regularly and offered suggestions. I had the appetizer portion of the seafood gumbo as an entrée. This was enough to fill me up! There was ample seafood from crab, shrimp, and oysters. I was most excited about the oysters; they were so fresh as if they were just chucked and thrown right into the stew. The gumbo base was so good I boxed up whatever I had left to eat at home. My boyfriend had a po boy sand which. He had the half portion, which was a pretty generous amount(about the length and almost size of the red basket it came in). He inhaled it. He said the bread was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The portions were right, the sauce made its mark, and the crispness of the fried shrimp was present and not soggy. For dessert, we had something similar to a beignet filled with pecans and a sweet praline sauce(I think that’s what it was?). The beignet was crispy outside and doughy in the center. As soon as we split the dessert in two portions, the pecans and the sauce came melting in the center. So delicious!

I honestly loved this place. My friend Ray brought me here because he knew I liked trying different types of food. This place serves creole southern Louisiana type food. I had some frog legs(so juicy and tasty) and I also had a spicy dish with alligator in it ! It was unbelievable I never thought it could be so delicious. It’s got some complex flavors and great attention to detail. The staff was laid back and friendly. We got seated next to the kitchen and everything smelled great and looked clean. I would definitely come back here. This place has a great vibe and some cool music playing . The bathrooms were decent, the service was quick, and the food was delicious at a reasonable price.

Evangeline is AWESOME! They have a delicious veggie Po’ boy that you have to try! Get the lunch special, includes the sandwich and a side for $ 7. It’s a great price and alot of food! I have tried the red beans and rice too, also very good! If you are missing NOLA, this is also a fantastic place to feel like you are back on Bourban Street. I just love it!

Great interior, very fun and funky. The gumbo has a nice, rich, dark roux. Good Abita selection of beer, but limited selection if you want anything else. Abita is fine, though, especially in a Louisiana restaurant. We had red beans and rice with sausage, and jambalaya. Very good, very authentic. I l highly recommend the pecan pistolette for dessert. Kinda like a beignet and a pecan pie had a baby. I really enjoyed my dinner. Service was OK.

So far my favorite Cajun restaurant in Austin! Service was outstanding, food came out extremely hot and pretty quick, and staff was very attentive. The seafood gumbo was amazing, left me wishing I had ordered a bowl instead of a cup-with just the right heat! I opted for the Hank Williams Special-crawfish pie, jambalaya, and chicken sausage gumbo. Everything was amazing! For dinner we had bread pudding-very large portion so plan to share it. Can’t wait to go back and try one of the other dishes!!!
