This review is for Melissa Amira’s belly dance classes at Diva Dance. I took intermediate belly dance with Melissa for a couple of years, and still go back for classes occasionally. The very far south location of this studio makes it difficult for non-southies to make it down, but it’s worth it. The studio is big, clean, and lovely. Melissa is a great teacher, very funny and humble, with killer technique. She covers all aspects of belly dance — isolations, layering, veil, zills, and some folkloric stuff as well. She tends to concentrate a lot on choreography in her more advanced classes which is great if you like choreography, less so if you tend to be an improvisational or solo dancer. She’s a great choice if you want to hone your technique and get your ass solidly but compassionately kicked.
