It was the closest place open near where we parked. Oh how lucky we were. While the sandwiches were great the sides of Mac and cheese and black eyed peas were most excellent.

Average. Not great, not bad — forgettable. We ordered Waldorf salad with salmon– the salmon was small, overlooked and over spiced. The kids ordered tuna melt — it was good, a burger — good and fries — which were home Made, soggy and undercooked. Upon complaints they brought another order which was fresh and delicious and made you wonder why didn’t they bring it this way the first time around?

The perfect place if you want a nice relaxed dinner. Many of the local spots are clearly aimed at college kids with loud music or sports on TV. We walked in and the atmosphere was relaxed. It was the kind of place to go on a date, meet for business or bring the family. The menu is not huge but the options all sound well planned. I had a chicken sandwich but I had to order an extra side dish because I couldn’t narrow it down to one. I even ate part of my girlfriends Brussel sprouts because they looked awesome and even tasted good. I wouldn’t trade my macaroni and cheese for them though. If you’re in Athens, «The Place» is a must visit.

Stopped by The Place since it was in a really convenient location, right by the Arch. Service was extremely friendly and attentive. Didn’t have a cocktail there but the beer selection had almost every local option and lots of others as well on draft and bottle. Bruschetta was my favorite snack, the pork chop was cooked perfectly with lots of flavor too. The bar upstairs had a fun vibe but wasn’t too loud. I would definitely recommend!

Came in alone while in town on business. The food is southern home favorites executed with the gracious aplomb of Mama cooking in the kitchen, albeit a fancy but down home one. I had the southern bruschetta which was delicious pimento and cheese — spicy, cheese with a touch of smoke from bacon and crisp coolness of fresh tomato. In a word, delicious. I splurged and also had the Fried veggies which was a mound of pickles, green tomatoes, and whole okra fried perfectly in a golden brown crispness that makes me want to slap my Mama for never frying anything nearly as good(and I grew up in Mississippi where if it’s not fried it’s not food). My entrée was the hangar steak, potatoes and Brussels sprouts. The steak while cooked beautifully was a bit tough but hangar steak usually is. The potatoes were light and creamy and the brussel sprouts stole the show. They were fantastic. Overall a delicious comforting meal that I would repeat again and tell my friends to go and enjoy the same.

All their info indicates they close at 10pm We drove 45 mins from out of town to eat there– and they decide to close the kitchen at.9:15pm. BEWARE-the employees make up and change their own rules when they feel like it!

The place had a constant flow of customers on a Thursday lunch time, after school semester was done. Very impressed. Service was great. Food took a while, but did not disappoint. We ordered 2 full size salads as appetizer for 4, and the server offered to split the salads in halves. Salads were great. Wife had the grilled pork chop, was very good. Better than most. The sides are southern conmfort food wth the mac-n-cheese and fried onion rings our favorites. 2 of us had the chicken dumpling. It was ok, sauce was bit too thick more like biscuit gravy. The dumplings were different than what I’m used to. Portions and prices are just right.

I liked my tuna melt, my dad enjoyed his fried chicken, but my mom got a BLT without tomatoes, so that was a let down and service wasn’t great.

I friggin LOVE this place !! But seriously, it’s great. My favorite restaurant in Athens. Try the fried chicken for sure. Mashed potatoes, absolutely. The fried vegetables appetizer with their ranch is the bomb. The burger is to die for. Oh, and the buttermilk chicken sandwich… basically it’s all good. Eat here!

Stopped in here before the annual G day game and I’m glad I did. The restaurant is very tiny so its a tight squeeze in there but the food makes up for it. The staff treats you just like family as soon as you visit. They don’t have a large menu, but the things that they do have that I tasted were great. I ordered the Shrimp and Grits. It was delicious(and spicy which i love). Their onion rings are also huge! I’d definitely go back next time I am in Athens.

I love going to The Place for lunch! The meat + two(or three) is a great deal and has great choices! I’m not very impressed with their dinner menu, but I am picky. I’d prefer to go to this restaurant for lunch. Service can sometimes be slow, but all servers are nice.

Hanging out with some friends in town for a game. We got hungry and decided to hit this jank up before the game. Awesome decision! The shrimp and grits was amazing and so flavorful! Worth the price($ 17). The shrimp were pretty big and juicy! The andouille sausage was pretty good too. My friends got the burgers and they looked really good. They really liked them. The atmosphere is cool in here. It’s located right in downtown Athens. The waitress we had and the staff was friendly and very knowledgeable about the menu and beer selections.

The staff are very attentive and helpful and extremely accommodating of substitutions 3. The décor is fun and from the windows or outdoors dining you have a great view of the entrance to the UGA campus and the people watching is superb. 4. Prices are very reasonable

What a find! We ate here twice this weekend. Just couldn’t get enough! Yesterday I had the BLT which consisted of avocado, a fried green tomato, thick cut crispy bacon, pimento cheese, and lettuce on hearty whole grain toast. Today I had the shrimp and grits for brunch. I got a little nervous as our very kind server, Matthew, told me that it was a new recipe and they were still working on it. But omg, was it good! A blend of perfect flavors. You won’t be disappointed with«The Place»!

On a recent visit to Athens I stumbled upon this gem. Well actually I Unilocaled it, but with so many great options in downtown Athens I had to choose one. If you like local craft beers from Creature Comfort, Monday Night Brewing, Sweet Water, Terrapin, Orpheus, and Jekyl(whew– I think that’s all the best GA breweries!) southern food then look for further. Who knew Tropicalia paired so well with collard greens?! The prices were much better than I expected. I had a beer, a meat, and three sides for around $ 15 at lunch time. They didn’t have a huge selection on the menu and their meat and three sides for $ 10 was by far the most appetizing thing on the menu. If you want to eat less there is a meat and two sides option for $ 8.50. There are 3 meat choices that are always around then 4 different meats that rotate throughout the week. You can choose from pork chops or chicken either grilled or fried, or grilled Salmon any day. Then, there is meatloaf Monday, Fried Steak Tuesday, Pulled BBQ Wednesday, Chicken and Dumplin Thursday, or «Seafood»(I do not like surprises) Friday. I had the grilled chicken and liked that it was moist and seasoned with fresh herbs. The sides were all on point. I only got to try the collard greens, fruit, and gouda mac and cheese but there was nothing left of any when I was done. The collard greens really hit the spot if you are looking for something savory but not too salty. I thought they were well balanced and had great texture. The gouda mac and cheese was everything you would expect, it was creamy and light with a crumble. The fruit was… well fruit… but I ate it because my mom would have wanted me to. The only downsides to this place was that I had to ask for a beer menu. I mean sure its only noon but we are in Athens, isn’t everyone always drinking? Its like New York City but instead of not sleeping… Also, it was a very small area and I could see how it would get too packed too quickly making this a lunch spot on a weekday. If you are in downtown Athens listen for the 2000s indie rock playing and know your headed for nostalgia and great southern food in the heart of the city.

Impossible to beat location, great cozy wood and brick interior — would the food be a let down? No. Not at all. The Place is a cool little place, emphasis on little, but one that does the stepped up Southern fare thing with some pride and pizazz. Our quick lunch stop while classes were still out between semesters may have be the perfect time to visit. Our party of four opted to eat upstairs at a high-back four-top near the bar, a tight room but not one that felt crowded. Great light and full, old timey windows. We opted to start with the fried veggie plate($ 5) as it had a combo with something for everyone — pickles, okra, and green tomatoes. Amazingly, all were really good — the okra big whole spears that were not at all tough and green tomatoes that were just tart and firm enough to hold up to the batter without going all soggy. Yum. Fairly big order as well, perfect for four noshing, might have leftovers with two modest eaters. All the sammiches looked good, but we went with a shrimp burger($ 9 calabash style whole fried shrimp covered in slaw and cocktail sauce on a soft bun), with a side of potato salad — just a nice sort of throwback lunch that was very filling. Also a quality Build Your Own BLT($ 8.50) which really benefitted with the addition of some avocado. Pair with the gouda mac n cheese side, really hits all your buttons. And also from the throwback machine, a Tuna Melt($ 8 homemade tuna salad topped with white cheddar on toasted wheat bread) that was rich and hearty and not too goopy. Our big eater opted for a meat and two($ 8.50) which included a fried chicken breast along with rich mashed potatoes — don’t think anything survived. A nice surprise was the nice selection of local crafts on draft — none of which were the usual suspects. Clearly a point of emphasis and some knowledge. Double yum. Desserts looked yummy too, but did not have any room left. Maybe next time.

I absolutely love the décor & music they play in the restaurant. They serve water in jars which is very southern like & they have lots of fried goodness on their menu. I got the veggie starter which included fried pickles, fried zucchini, & fried okra. My favorite out of the three was the fried okra! The okra is crispy and goes excellent with their ranch. I would definitely recommend this veggie starter & the upside is that they give you a big portion. As my main entrée, I chose the burger. Let me tell you, the burger was decent & part of it was raw. The buns of the burger were not good & the taste of the burger itself was nothing special. Their fries had a sweet taste to them & were decent if you like sweet fries. There ranch is off the chain.

Four of us visited for Sunday brunch and everything we tasted was a home run. The comfy menu is great! Biscuits, cheese grits, great breakfast potatoes. Eggs benedict, chicken and a waffle, shrimp and grits. Everything was super tasty and nicely priced. Jittery Joe’s coffee… and two great brunch cocktails were offered. The Place has a fun and buzzing vibe. Front of house seemed organized and warm. If the quality from the kitchen stays consistent, this restaurant will be a big success.
