the food is meh, and the place tries too hard to impress.
I get that they remodeled recently but it looks more like your run of the mill generic restaurant than a Japanese restaurant.
Also the klammath roll came out looking like it was flopped on the ground and scooped on my tray. Also the booths are way too small and oddly uncomfortable for more than 20 mins.

This is one of the best places to get sushi in Arcata. Just be weary when you order to go, this is the third time in a row we’ve been missing stuff in our order. The host doesn’t go through what’s in the bag with you and stuff is pretty much forgotten every time. It sucks when you pay for a meal and go home just to see that your cucumber salad or rice is missing

Take these most recent reviews about the place going downhill into very strong consideration when picking this place for sushi. And just for you I’m going to add another one…
Recently took my wonderful girlfriend here for the first time ever, and it was a terrible experience. First, our waitress was flat out rude. Giving huffs and puffs, you could clearly tell she did not want to be at work. I intermittently would catch her crying while she was walking around? I understand… Maybe she was having a tough day, we all do. But for the love of God go home, don’t let that reflect on how you deal with your PAYING customers. Getting a refill on water was a mission in and of itself. I ordered three rolls total two for myself and my girlfriend ordered one. Well first two rolls came out, wondering where my third was. It took an HOUR to get my third. And I placed this order all at the same time. Zero acknowledgement from our server. Another server came over because she could clearly tell I was aggravated. She was extremely helpful in helping me get the situation sorted out. She must have told the manager because my roll finally came out and the asshat had the audacity to come over and make some stupid comment in regard to how it tasted for me having to wait so long. Unprofessional. Finally I asked to have the roll taken off my bill because I clearly was not paying for it, and it was. It was the least they could have done. I shouldn’t even have had to ask. And a big Thanks to the server who took time away from her other tables to help us. I gave her the full tip and not my original server.
The two stars is going to go to the food. It can be really really good I guess if you time it right. Some of the speciality rolls are delicious.
Second experience just last week… Took my girlfriend back in there hoping for a better experience so I wouldn’t have to totally write this place off. Went it stood at the counter with no acknowledgement. Asked for a table, got my name on the list. My girlfriend pointed at the bar so we told the hostess that’s where we were headed. Went sat at the bar that was practically empty aside from a few other couples. Bar had what looked like a lake of water on it with an empty glass just sitting there. I’m not kidding when I say we sat there for five minutes without someone behind the bar saying a word to us. Pick up your friken heads. Then someone finally said I’ll be right with you and proceeded to walk away and not come back for another 5. And I get it table orders order from the bar, but they weren’t mixing drinks or anything. At least wipe down the bar in front of me so I can put down my menu. Give me a damn place setting. TERRIBLE SERVICE.
So I’ve written this place off. I MIGHT consider the one in Mckinleville next time
And if you think I wrote this review to take a hard stab or ruin business, think again, its just a take on my experience and an input that your money can be spent at better places in Arcata.

The sushi was fresh and good. The service was among the worst I’ve ever experienced. The waiter came to our table immediately after we sat down and asked if we were ready to order. We told him we needed a couple of minutes and then he didn’t come back for 10 to 15 minutes. We ordered to sushi rolls and an hors d’œuvre. They were very expensive in the portions were shockingly small. If that wasn’t bad enough waiter only Bodus one of the two sushi rolls we ordered. We kept waiting for him to come and check on us but he never did. We finished both plates and then waited easily 10 more minutes. We stacked the empty plates at the edge of the table and he still didn’t come back. Finally we just got up and paid at the register. I left a zero tip for the first time in my life. We then went to McDonald’s where we finally got filled up.

Wow, this place has been on the downhill decline recently. I love coming to this place but I noticed there are some pretty significant items i just cant overlook anymore. One is the service, oh god, management, please tell the waitresses that they are there to serve us and we are paying customers. I would add two more stars to this rating if I were to be served and treated better. Ignoring folks, slapping plates on the table. Screwing orders for to go. Our family would dump 100 – 150 dollars a month on this joint a month, but that wont be the case anymore.
Look, i know management cant control everyone of their waitresses. But, if the same experience for the past two months goes on, something needs to change. I know if you were working in my restaurant, they would be canned.
Oh, and finally, if you are sooo busy, do not do the worst mistake and not take togo orders. Be honest and tell the customer that its busy and the orders will likely not be filled for an hour, even if you told me two hours I would appreciate it far better than «We are so busy I’m not taking to go orders», then precede to hang up on a customer. Oh for that your lucky you got two stars.

The boom ass boom sushi! Try the Trinidad for a light crunchy mustard kick and the Spicy Tiger for a party in your mouth. Great service. Happy bellys.

love the newly expanded area! so much more space between the tables, gives it a much more intimate feel! affordable sushi and great portions. server was super nice :)

I waited 1 hr and 45 min for my food. It was cold. The order was wrong. This place has totally gone downhill. Horrible horrible experience.
There are much better places. I’ll drive to Hanna next time. The food is better and it’s faster despite the drive.

My rating is based on service. I would give the food 5 stars; fresh, tasty, and innovative. Service was very slow and the bare minimum. Granted, the place was very busy, but that’s management’s responsibility to ensure they are well staffed and ready to accommodate such conditions.

Ever since they opened, my favorite roll has been the Klamath Roll. It’s nothing fancy just some salmon katsu with avocado covered by spicy mayo but it is a classic. I was excited to see that they expanded a few months ago into what used to be the pizza place next door. It was amazing not having to wait for an hour to get a table anymore. The same friendly staff have been added to along with a bar area including a screen to watch football. They do need to add more sushi rolling staff if they want to keep up with the increased sushi orders though. I hope they will get on this soon.

The stars they get are for the food.
The service is terrible. I don’t live in town anymore but when I’m back, I want to come in for my favorite roll.
I only order to go now, I refuse to eat in the restaurant. The servers are rude and it takes a good 30 – 45 minutes for them to take your order and get your food to you.
As for to go, have they no concept of time? I’m always told it will be 20 – 25 minutes before it’s ready to be picked up. As a rule, I give them 45 minutes before I go in because I’ll be waiting for that time anyways. Yesterday after giving them an extra 15 minutes, I still had to wait another 10. I ordered a side of their dynamite sauce, which to me, a side means on the side. But they put it all over my roll.
I’m not impressed. They need to hire all new staff.

Cooked roll favorite was las vegas roll with solid cuts of fsh and crispy on outer
Sashimi plates served in rose shape and good quality but sliced thinly, great presentation

Sushi spot is always crowded. People waiting outside for twenty minutes to be called to go inside this restaurant where servers are coming and going, nearly crashing into you in a hurried pace. Mediocre sushi.
Not too many vegan options, but you can substitute their tempura (has egg) for just the same veg steamed.
Expensive for how little it is, then adding the factor of it not being phenomenal is lame.
Come here to waste money and order a bunch of rolls.

I’m very very happy to report that weekend dining at Sushi Spot is no longer mythology. Recently remodeled, this place is now super comfy. The staff are generally awesome, friendly, and accommodating.
As far as food… If quality and cut of sea fare matter to you… This is the only game in town.
In a coastal community with a decent ocean fishery, this is literally the only sushi site that conveys this fact.
The chefs are great at coming up with specials that are both adventurous and genuine.

Yes, Arcata is just that awesome. We have two outstanding sushi restaurants within stumbling distance of each other. With totally unique menus and atmospheres. There is something a bit intimate about the spot. They don’t take reservations, so it’s first come first served. The tempura rolls are well worth the wait. Favorites are the Klamath Roll and the Sunshine Roll. But all I have tried are melt in your mouth good.

The sushi chefs specials is the reason I come here, creative and often very unique. The twists on adding little ingredients that completely change the flavor and creates a sonic boom in my mouth. I love the use of shisho, mango, cilantro, honey sirracha with fairy high grade fish. I wish there were more specials with Oysters especially since they are local and fresh and their my favorite with an Asian spin.
The house sake is delicious! They serve local Eel River Organic IPA.
The service could be better all around the restaurant but especially at the front when you first walk in, sometimes it detours me but once I sit down I’m super happy I did. Everything tastes fresh and crazy awesome!!!

The service: came in with a group of five and they said 15 – 20 minute wait. Okay, cool… But even I, who had never worked in the restaurant business, could see that the large tables they wanted us to sit in were nowhere near 15 – 20 minutes to completion. Forty — five minutes to an hour later, sitting /​standing in the cold and still no sushi in my belly. But there’s two open smaller tables… We can’t just push them together? The hostess says no, because they «don’t do that,» but they accommodated us (it was already 9pm) and pushed the tables together, after I voiced how ridiculous the policy was. We did get some warm tea while we waited, which was nice.
The saving grace for this place was the price and the quality of fish and the rolls. It may be my desperation for some sort of sushi to satiate my appetite, but I have yet to find better sushi in Humboldt. They ran out of uni, but I look forward to trying it when they have it.

So I love the sushi spot my fiancée and I eat here regularly we get the same thing every time. Today was absolutely the worst experience we’ve had. I always get the Vegas roll mine was falling apart to the touch our waitress was rude. I had to ask and wait awhile for a refill my fiancée roll was made wrong our soy sauce bottle was DIRTY and we weren’t served soy sauce plates not impressed
