Lived in Japan the past four years — most authentic I’ve had in Anchorage. Gyoza is on par, nice and garlicky, as is the miso. Even the music is the same :)

I order the King Crab Salad. The crab tasted old, very choosy and smelled pretty bad. For $ 19 dollars you would think they would add more crap to it. My date got the ramen which she said wasn’t bad but the meat tasted a little old

I been to this place 3 times or so and everytime the food is great and consistant. How the layout of the restaurant even when there is a lot of people it does not seem like that. The service is quick and friendly and a good array of drinks. Most recent visit I had one of there combo plates and it came with soup and salad plus the meal. The tempura had a mix of vegetables and seafood very good.

This restaurant was probably one of the worst Japanese restaurants that we’ve ever gone to albeit we had high hopes since it was in Alaska with seemingly great access to raw fish. We go to many Japanese restaurants and probably average about 1 Japanese restaurant every two weeks. We’re from Los Angeles so there is an abundance of great Japanese restaurants so maybe it’s unfair to compare them to Los Angeles restaurants, but that’s our reference point. The 20 piece sushi order at $ 39 was awful at best. The sashi was not fresh, and hard to eat, but at $ 39 I felt obligated. I’ve had store bought raw fish that was better. The gyoza was pretty good, so I’m willing to bet that the cooked food isn’t bad. Just stay away from the sushi and raw fish.

We ordered to go as usual. We got the Champon, Combination Yakisoba, and an order of mixed tempura. Champon: Their Champon was quite good. It came with scallops, shrimp, squid, and octopus for those so inclined, although I got it without the tentacles lol. The broth was very flavorful and they were very generous with the shrimp. 7⁄10. Mixed Tempura: Considering we opened this to eat as soon as we got home, I was disappointed to find it SOGGY! I’ve never gotten fresh tempura that turned out soggy so fast. I don’t think they cooked it enough :(2/10 Combo Yaki: This stuff tasted weird. Why? It tasted like they put a bunch of worcestershire sauce on the noodles which is something I’ve never detected in any yakisoba before. It wasn’t exactly bad, but it certainly wasn’t what was expected. Plus, the dish looked WAY different than the picture they had posted in the place. The pic showed colorful veggies, while the dish itself had very few veggies. 4⁄10. All in all, this place underwhelmed. However the champon was good enough that we might return for it in the future.

Located across from Anchorage visitor center. They have alot of Japanese food to choose from. The food and ambiance was average. The service was good. I ordered the sashimi/salmon bento box and the chef was able to give me all sake sashimi ;) Husband got the yakitori chicken and spicy tuna hand roll which he likes. They can definitely improve the taste alot more. The lunch price was $ 46 inc tips which is pretty expensive for lunch.

Bummed. Kumagoro has been around for YEARS. And it shows. Same worn out seats, same china, same photos on the wall. Unfortunately, the food and service just couldn’t redeem the place. Tanmen was too salty, lacked flavor, and the only vegetables were some sad-looking pieces of lettuce. Chicken yakisoba was salty and forgettable. The service was poor. Drinks went unfilled, meals came at different times, and we were never checked on. I used to love this place as a teenager. As an adult? Not so much.

Food was good, but they got REALLY bad attitude!!! The waitress is a Korean girl. We may have accent since we are not American, but she keep a unhappy face all the time towards us!

The sushi was terribly underwhelming and over expensive. I’ve had sushi at three other places for $ 6 cheaper and it was more filling AND tasty. Would not recommend.

Originally I was concerned after reading those one star reviews, it indeed surprised me. Ramen was well cooked. Authentic Chinese or Japanese noodle is a little firmer than those in US restaurants. For $ 29, a sashimi plate is great. Fresh and well prepared. The gyoza is good as well.

Skip it for Sushi Sushi. Tako portion was generous as was the Alami. The Seafood Salad was a crime with salad/bait shrimp. Sashimi cuts were unimpressive at $ 26 for 14 pieces. Miso was fair but when I accepted the offer I expected complementary not a $ 3 addition to the tab. Finally after I was still hungry and ready to order a 4 piece Hamachi nigiri but instead was presented the bill from the sushi chef I decided to author this review.

LMAO, you call this japanese food? First of all, ramen noodles were not even well cooked. They tasted like instant noodles u can pick up from supermarket for 99 cents lol. My wife has stomach problem and cant eat anything spicy. We have informed the waiter clearly before ordering and her noodles came with spicy powder in the soup. Then we requested for a switch and this lady boss put on a very unhappy face! We then ordered an udon and asked if they can just overcook the noodles a little since my wife was sick. And they REFUSED! Claiming they cant do it to thier udon! OMFG, like u guys are really serving authentic japanese food? FYI, they are just a typical asian owned japanese cusine. Shoulda believed the Unilocal reviews.

Very bad food here. Salmon is not fresh at all and even has rooted white stuff on it. Salmon egg is like from last month and smelled really bad. Miso soup is too salty. I complained to them and they tried to argue with me saying they cut the salmon everyday. Just want to leave. Totally shame on Japanese food.

Very lovely decorating, fresh and clean with many plants. Friendly service and great food. We were in Anchorage for one night and were well satisfied with our meal. We both had a combination dinner that included miso soup, rice that was a bit too sticky(my only negative) and salad. I had tempura that was not greasy and was a delicious in the mouth. Teriyaki salmon cooked to perfection and Sashimi. My sister had the chicken and beef teriyaki. We were both wowed by the food and our taste buds were happy

I came across Kumagoro during lunch one afternoon looking to try something new in the downtown area. The storefront was covered with pictures of a wide array of food that looked rather delicious, hearty, and filling so I decided to check it out. Upon entering, I was quickly greeted by the flustered-yet-friendly host/server. The interior was interesting, lots of «Asian stuff» hanging everywhere, a bit dark, uncomfortable chairs, but a lot to take in. A few beers were offered, the essentials for a sushi establishment(Kirin, Sapporo, Asahi). The menu was large, covering all the Japanese staples — sukiyaki, ramen, katsu, curry, etc. Up to this point, I’d had a series of poor lunches so I was just looking for something that couldn’t be screwed up. Anchorage is fish town, so I figured I couldn’t go wrong with the halibut teriyaki(ordered with no rice and extra veggies). About that… I have to admit, I was a bit of a fool for not looking in my to-go container prior to walking back to the office to partake in my meal because what I found I would not have accepted. First, there was rice. A lot of rice. I’d asked for none, so when 80% of my container is filled with the grain, it doesn’t particularly thrill me. Extra veggies? Nope, try a few forks of overcooked veggies. The halibut was incredibly«chisai» for the price, we’re talking three bites worth for $ 15+. The sauce is the most important component of a good teriyaki-anything, and sadly Kumagoro’s sauce was watery and flavorless. Hey, at least the rice was cooked well… This is the only Japanese/Asian restaurant I’ve visited in Anchorage, so good news to all the others — you don’t have to do much to beat this.

This restaurant has a broad offering of Japanese food including Ramen, sushi, Shabu Shabu, Japanese curry. Before I get into the food, let me just tell you how awkwardly low the chairs are, everyone in the restaurant pretty much looked like they were sitting on the floor. Maybe they are trying something new… yoga while you eat… perhaps. We ordered the Miso Chasumen, Pork Curry, Kimchi ramen, shoyu ramen, Gyoza, and calamari. We wanted to order sushi but just couldn’t fathom paying $ 8 and up for just 2 pieces of Nigiri. Sushi rolls were $ 15 and up… pricey! Ramen broth was surprisingly ok, needed some tableside adjustments, shoyu, salt, etc. Kimchi broth was the best of the three. «Ramen» noodles are thin Asian egg noodles not ramen. Chasu bore a strong resemblance in taste and appearance to pork slices you get at the Deli. Curry was quite bland and the rice, completely overcooked… curry congee anyone? Gyoza is mediocre at best. bland. Calamari, one of the worst I’ve ever had. Service was good. So if you need an Asian fix and have no transportation outside of downtown then by all means try yoga dining here. Otherwise, pass on this place.

A friend and I walked many blocks to get here(a downtown event prevented decent parking) we were set on finding this magical ‘white’ ginger(the shavings alongside sushi) The ginger is usually pink so upon hearing about the white ginger, I was intrigued to see if it would cleanse your palette better. I had ordered the following: * Spicy Crunch Roll We shared: * Oden appetizer * A Pair of Unagi * Salted Chicken Yakitori The service was OK, the sushi was meh. The roll was not tightly packed, so each bite would fall apart and there wasn’t much in the middle(shrimp, avocado etc.) nothing I would rave about. The food we shared was very delicious and is the saving grace of this review. The Oden, a soup with fish cakes in a hot broth(a more traditional food in Korea or Japan, so I’m told) it had a lot of flavor. The pair of Unagi was fantastic, I normally do not like eel but it was tasty. The salted chicken Yakitori was good but unfortunately it was not fresh and was reheated in a microwave which dried out the chicken soooo it could have been better. I won’t be returning, there are too any other places waiting for me!

PROS: quality of food, flavor, large selection, location, reasonable pricing CONS: service, décor, very short tables and chairs which were somewhat uncomfortable. I tried their king crab, salmon, and halibut stone hotpot with sashimi, yakitori, and tempura shrimp appetizer. Yum!!! What a treat!!!

The décor in this place is different but I like it! I had amazing service from the sushi chef, he catered immediately to our every want and need. Yes, the prices are definitely more than other places in Anchorage, however, you have to remember the location. I got the Kumagoro Steak, i’m not much of a beef or steak eater but the picture looked yummy! Literally, within two minutes of ordering I had their salad with a ginger type dressing, it was sweet and yummy. The salad accompanied a miso soup that was very good(I don’t even like miso much). Then came my hot sizzling Kumagoro Steak($ 25.00)(hot plate) with a side of rice. The steak was on sauteed cabbage and onions(probably some other stuff). The steak was in a ginger based marinade/sauce of some sort. It was very flavorful and cooked perfectly medium rare as I asked. I would come again for the more affordable lunches. If your looking for fast and friendly service and are downtown, give this place a shot :)

Was craving for some udon and my fiancé suggested this place. They only have two udon options on the menu: tempura udon or nabeyaki udon. I went with the nabeyaki. It came with a side of two shrimp tempuras. In the broth, there were vegggies, fish cake an egg, shiitake mushroom and some chicken. The broth was delicious and the noodles were of the perfect consistency. We paired our meals with some large sapporos and hot sake. The meal was perfect for a cold day Anchorage. I loved how the menu had plenty of pictures. It made me want to order everything since it all looked so yummies. Even the walls had framed pictures of items from their menu. They serve a wide variety of Japanese food here which include ramen, udon, sushi, sashimi and even shabu shabu! Great service & great food. I’ll definitely have to come back and try the other things on the menu.
