Seems like they’ve always been here, but long enough anyway, to get it «just right.» Shows are always finely executed and the total experience a reliably pleasant and entertaining FREE evening. A real treasure for our city. Love it that there are 2 different consecutive shows this year. Sorry I missed the first one this summer. I would just suggest– ban smoking or designate a smoking area above and away from the seating.

This would have been a 4* review except for the fact that the shows are FREE!!! I’ll repeat that. THESHOWSAREFREE!!! OK, enough shouting, but that’s what everyone was doing during the standing ovation at the end of the performance of The Producers. Other than a few audio glitches occasionally during the show, The performance was very entertaining. Acting was excellent, choreography was fantastic, singing was superb. This show will play for a couple more weeks. I highly recommend it. As already pointed out, the location of the Washington Park Playhouse is at the corner of Madison Av and New Scotland Av, it’s NOT on Broadway. Note: Parental discretion is recommended for children under 13 due to adult content.

I’m not sure why this is listed as Broadway as the performances take place at the lakehouse in Washington Park. Okay, maybe you’re not a fan of show tunes or musical theater, but get over it. How can you beat good-quality musical productions under the stars for a grand total of… nothing? Seriously. What a great deal. Most of the productions are high-quality with great costumes and sets, even when I’m not a huge fan of the actual script itself(I’m looking at you Rodgers and Hammerstein.) I can’t blame the cast and crew for my feminist outcry at the rampant misogyny and racism in Carousel or South Pacific, can I? Of course not. You used to be able to bring coolers, which they’ve now apparently banned. That along with all the«no alcohol» signs(even though you can purchase beer from a vending cart) makes these productions lose a star. I know it’s not the cast or crew’s fault — it’s the city. Still, I’m willing to accept that and the blatant advertisements in the name of free entertainment. Bring a picnic, a blanket, some low chairs and bug spray and it’s a free night out for the fam.(You could even pick up some Capital Q for the show…) And if the au natural thing ain’t your cuppa tea, you can reserve chairs up front for a nominal fee. But really, IMHO, that’s kind of overkill unless there’s a medical reason you can’t sit on the ground.
