What we ordered: Shepherd’s Pie, tossed salad, a fried fish sandwich, vegetable soup. the verdict: What can I say, Grandma’s is like an old friend, a blast from the past, a warm memory of simpler times. I have come here many times over the years and ordered many pies to go. It’s a place to get basic old style American comfort food. The décor is Ala 1970’s dark wood, wallpaper and«grandma’s parlor» charm. They are famous for over decorating for every holiday so we were surrounded by shamrocks and leprechauns. We came for lunch. The waitress was very friendly and competent. I had one of their Irish specials Shepherd’s pie and it was bland. Not bad just bland. Made with ground beef and corn with a piped mashed potato crust. The salad was standard iceberg lettuce with some shredded carrots and cabbage. My mom enjoyed her cup of veg soup which was chock full of vegetables and looked homemade. She liked her fried fish sandwich too. We resisted pie(dang diet!) but shouldn’t have because hands down it is the best thing on their menu. In the past I’ve had the cream of turkey soup, homemade mashed potatoes, stuffing and sauteed apples, chocolate cream pie, banana split cream pie and country apple all of which are very comforting and good. My advice: Go for comfort food and of course pie just don’t expect anything groundbreaking.

If you aren’t lucky enough to be married to a woman who makes a great pie… well, you messed up there. I, for one, married my wife almost exclusively for her pie-making abilities.* What was I saying? Oh, right: If you aren’t lucky enough to be married to a woman who makes a great pie, you could come to Grandma’s. They’ve got just about every kind of pie you could want, and occasionally a few specialties as well(5-fruit pie!). And they are good. Plus, they make excellent gifts for your family members during the holidays, and for your wife if you have to make amends for saying something stupid on Unilocal. _____________ *Just kidding, honey. Please don’t murder me in my sleep.

On a rainy afternoon driving back to New York from a wedding in Vermont, we pulled over to Grandma’s because it looked nice and we were starved. Our sever was friendly. We had light meals. I had the chef’s salad which was full of meat and cheese. My cousin liked the chicken soup so much that she had two bowls full. We did not try the pies but they looked delicious. It was one of those times you take a chance and the place exceeds your expectations!

Do you get that warm fuzzy feeling after visiting grandma’s place and getting your slice of homemade pie? Well… you can still get your pie on here but you probably won’t get exactly what you’re looking for. It has indeed been around for several years(since ’76?) and is making a dent in the city’s history for its«world famous» home baked pies and home style cooking. In the many special occasions I’ve attended, a pie from Grandma’s had been present. Dutch apple, banana cream, sugar free apple, coconut custard, peach, cherry, and I’m sure many more… some more spectacular than others. It struck me one day I saw a truck that parked right behind the restaurant unloading boxes and boxes… are they the home baked pies? Well, whatever they are and wherever they’re from, they’ve got lots and lots of people lining up to get those goods every holiday and especially Thanksgiving and Christmas! Grandma also serves breakfast(omelettes, french toast, quiches, typical run of the mill eggs and toast), lunch(sandwiches, soups, salads), and dinner(pot roast, pasta, fish n chips, pork chops, chicken parm). I don’t recall the food being particulary unique but yes hearty, or the service extremely attentive/quick but yes gets the job done. Grandma would be upset with me if I told her the truth about her cooking, but hey, she’s been around long enough to gain enough respect from both young and old. So if you want to grab a casual and quick bite or bring a solid pie to visit a friend, Grandma will make it happen!

Homestyle food, great pie. Not a long wait at all. Was busy so food took extremely long, but usually fast food during breakfast. Excellent pie.

We were in Albany for an event and decided to have lunch at Grandma’s. My wife tells me there use to be a Grandma’s Pie in Syracuse and good memories of the pies. Good parking. Comfortable setting and excellent service. I had the Grampy’s Burger and fries. My burger freshly ground chuck was cooked perfectly medium rare. The bun lightly toasted. The fries were wedge cut with the skins on. The small portion of fries were excellent. If you love fries add a large portion. I had plain ice tea. My wife had the grilled cheese and tomato. She love it but it came on white bread instead of rye. The tomato was thick and a little hard. The pies. The main reason for our stop. I had the Wild Blue Berry. Very disappointing! I don’t know what they used to thicken the syrup on the blueberries but it tasted like paste. It over powered the taste of the blueberries. The crust blah! My wife had the Red Cherry Pie It was also very disappointing! Same problem! She did enjoy the vanilla ice cream. I would go back for the food but skip the pie.

I just moved to New York’s capital district and found this place. It is now my go-to place for COMFORTFOOD. Their eggplant parmesan is SECONDTONONE. And I am a world class expert on this as I order it everywhere. It’s my favorite version in the world. Their menu contains familiar items and interesting specialties at unbelievably low, reasonable prices. The staff is great and the atmosphere super cozy. They are almost always busy because everything about Grandma’s Pies & Restaurant is very, very desirable and enjoyable. Of COURSE, the PIES too! — Raspberry is my favorite. What’s yours? Go find out! Their version will WOW you.

First time here this afternoon. Was furniture shopping in the area and everyone was ravenous, so we were looking for something quick that wouldn’t have a wait. Not bad! First — the staff was super friendly and the place is cute… kinda like walking into your grandma’s living room/dining room situation. There are plenty of pies on display in the case as you walk in… of several varieties. The portions are gigantic and the food is definitely fresh. I had the jambalaya special — and it was really decent. I wasn’t expecting much but it had a nice kick and overall flavor. The other two folks at the table had the roasted turkey dinner(lunch portion… or a la carte as they call it on the menu) with mashed potatoes and gravy. It’s the real deal and there’s an entire meal leftover from what she didn’t finish. Same thing with the 3rd diner: chef’s salad(large). It’s bigger than large… so prepare for a to-go box. Fresh lettuce and tons of stuff on top… she barely made a dent in it. We didn’t have any pie but I do plan on going back sometime to try some. Service was attentive and our iced teas were filled frequently.

The one thing Grandma’s does better than most restaurants is make you feel like you just walked into a family members house, kind of like grandmas house on thanksgiving. Sadly this Grandma is really only good at one thing, and that’s pies. Tonight I stopped into grandma’s for a nice dinner and some dessert. I ordered the chicken pot pie and a side of seafood bisque. Keeping with the theme, maybe some of you have that grandpa who puts salt on everything? The seafood bisque I ordered tasted like grandpa fell asleep at the table with the salt shaker in his hand. In between bites I was forced to drink water just to lessen the impact of the salt… Not pleasant. I’m really not sure how it tasted other than the salt. Now onto the pot pie. I love pot pies, they are one of my all time favorite comfort foods, right along with Mac n cheese. However if there is one rule of pot pie it is that you can never undercook the crust. The pie that was given to me at first sight looked perfect, yet underneath lurked an undercooked doughy puff pastry… Thankfully the filling was tasty, but was still a little salty for my taste. Now for $ 10 soup and a pot pie isn’t a bad deal, but the execution left me wanting my money back. Thankfully I was saved at the end of meal, and was greeted by a beautifully tasty, fluffy, luscious slice of chocolate cream pie. Note to self: only go to grandma’s for pie. Not additional notes. Just go up and pay with card or cash. Parking is a sinch.

This came up on Unilocal, and let me tell you, I’m a man who likes his pie. I dragged my coworker there. The lunch food we got was ‘ok’ but the pie was so good. I went with open strawberry. Amazing. If we hadnt been flying home I’d have gotten more pie to go. There’s an entire menu devoted just to pies. Did I say ‘pie’ enough in this review? Pie

First time here. We are just driving thru. The name is very promising. The outside looked cute and well kept. The inside looks like they bought all the patriotic supplies at a craft store. Very festive! The waitress is really nice and offered very good advice on what to order. They seem busy. We are having the«Grandma Special Sandwich» and a Turkey Sandwich, with side orders of the special summer potatoes salad. Food is tastee! The«Grandma Special» was a triple decker and was soooo good. The roast turkey tastes really good too. Homemade Russian dressing on the special and the homemade salads are also really good. The waitress has been very attentive. Now time for pie. I ordered the cheese cake. It is very think and tastee too. My wife had the coconut custard and it’s great too. Don’t be afraid of the décor. It was a little dirty looking when we walked in but the tables were quickly cleared so maybe they had a lot of people just leave. Very glad we stopped and stayed.

I had high expectations for Grandma’s after a few years of hearing about their amazing pies. We tried a chocolate cream pie and a lemon pie, and neither were better than the pies we’ve tried at the Gateway Diner(or any other diner around). I felt like the crust: pie ratio was off(too much crust). Our lunch entrees were standard. I had a salad with grilled chicken and lemon vinaigrette which was a good size. Our server was friendly and helpful with our pie choices. Grandma’s is the definition of a 3 star«A-OK» rating.

I LOVE this place. The food is all home made and AMAZING. Around valentines day they have small heart shaped cheesecakes that are delicious. So good when I went back to get one they were out of them! I recently went here with a group of couples(6 of us total) and was a little disappointed by the service, but NOT the food at all. The kid serving us kept forgetting about drinks we ordered, and even a napkin/silverware for 1 of us at the table. I told him to get his shit together, and I was not kidding. Other than this 1 occasion of bad service(it was also a packed house), I’ve never had an issue there. The eggplant fries are amazing, I would recommend them to anyone. No matter what I’ve gotten here I’ve loved it. I’ve gone with anywhere from 2 people to 14 and usually the service is fast, and they get all the food right without a hassle. As I’m sure you can tell by the title of the restaurant, they mainly do pies, and the pies are also amazing. My girlfriends friend got a waffle with ice cream and that looked awesome too. Overall I’d eat here any day of the week!

Short but sweet… The Dutch Blueberry would have been nicer if it had more filling. Having it ala mode($ 6.20). Decent vanilla ice cream. The Lemon Crunch($ 3.75) was very good, nice crust with the same crumble topping as on the Dutch Blueberry. The coffee($ 1.99) has little flavor. Our well seasoned server was cheerful and friendly.

I have been coming here for years, since I was a poor & hungry college student. This is where the 4th star comes from. Over the years, the quirky individuality of this place has remained, despite maybe one change in ownership. One change– for the good– was when the smoking section was eliminated! Previously, non-smokers had to suffer from a wall of toxic air mingling with the hanging holiday decorations. The ever changing decorations! Makes me feel like I’m right back in elementary school again! The consistent menu, atmosphere, and the great selection of pies… true comfort. Gourmet? No. Friendly, efficient staff? Yes. Like Grandma’s house? Just close your eyes…

Can I just say that I am stuffed? Ordered the chicken parm and spaghetti. Soooo good! It came with sweet rolls and yummy Manhattan chowder. My dinner mate had the veal parm and said it was incredible. He had salad with his. The portions are so huge that we will be having it for lunch tomorrow. Both had pie for dessert. Swiss chocolate Almond for me. To be honest I couldn’t eat it because I was so full but I’m looking forward to having it later for a snack. The atmosphere is always happy and Dave is very entertaining. Thanks again, Grandma, for not disappointing.

I had the crab stuffed shrimp dinner special and it was served over rice pilaf. The waitress was amazingly awesome and extremely helpful and friendly. I would have given 5 stars, but one of the kids in our party(party of 7) had a burger that was over cooked. Besides that the rest of the food was great. This was the first time we came to eat here and will more than likely come again when we are in the area.

I used to come here with family on a regular basis. I recently went on a visit home on Saturday midday. I have to say, I was not as impressed as I was when I was a 12-year-old. The menu offers comforting fare in an overly decorated diner-style restaurant. They’re also(obviously) known for their pies, especially pre-holiday when there is a line outside the door.(I recommend the coconut cream!) The food can be hit or miss. I had a tuna sandwich that was pretty bleh, but my mom had the famous turkey soup(which I thought was delicious, but it tasted just like the guts of a pot pie). The coffee was also pretty bleh, but I’m a stickler for coffee. What I hated most was that our waitress was not warm at all and I almost felt like a bother to her when I asked for water. Very strange considering many other reviews praise the service. I won’t be back, sorry, grandma!
