We were specifically searching for a Basque restaurant and were led to Zerain. The ambiance midday seemed reserved for business meetings. The tasting menus gave us everything we wanted in a two hour lunch though. It ended up being the second most expensive place we ate at in Madrid but well worth the price, there were so many delicious foods we had trouble finishing. The cider pronounced«Ceeee-dar»(we were corrected repeatedly with a hint of irritation) was wonderful. It came out with chorizo type links and rolls — unnecessary filler, save yourself for the great stuff. Each of the tasting menus had options, the following is what we ended up with: Tasting Menu 1: Re-fried beans with hocks, lettuce and peppers to add in Chuleton steak Tasting Menu 2: Bacalao omelet Bone-in Chuleton steak The meal also came with a giant Batavia salad and a shot of Patxaran as a digestif. Separately, we ordered a surprising dessert, Junket. It’s made with milk and rennet, which gives it an odd, sour flavor that grew on me. It was a pretty outstanding, slow, beef filled lunch that is to be remembered.

You have to be in the right frame of mind for this place. Is it handsome but not luxurious, and the menu is small but not spare. The service is outstanding but not obsequious, and the food is simple but not plain. After many lunches and dinners in boisterous tapas bars and high falutin Michelin restaurants, this was right in the middle but was precisely what the doctor ordered. The chorizo sausages that welcome you upon seating are some of the best things we ate in 10 days through Spain. The red piquillos and green guernika peppers(separate dishes) were cooked to perfection, the sliced steak was very enjoyable and the mushrooms were fat and juicy, and included some excellent scalloped potatoes. The meal finished with a lovely digestif similar to ouzo and the house superior red wine, at 3.6 euros(or included in prix fixe meal choices) was in fact superior. Prices were reasonable, service outstanding. Couldn’t think of a nicer end to a gastronomically scintillating trip!

We tried the steaks, chistorra and omelets, all of them were above the expectation The wine list was very good and the service is outstanding In general is expensive as it is located in a touristic area

Really, really good place. Delicious food: the pre-meal bread + chorizo is fantastic, as is the mushroom/asparagus/potatoes and the steak for two(aka Chuleton! Get this. It is an expensive dish but will feed four no problem and is so good). This place is not as expensive as its rating: for a party of four we were more than satisfied with sharing the Chuleton(37 euros, again, get this) and a couple other veg/fish dishes(9 – 12 euros each). The atmosphere is very comfortable and the service is prompt, which is not something you typically can say of Spanish restaurants. Highly recommend.

This place is really really good. It was perfect for our(post-cocktail, post-tapas) needs last night: good meat, no pretensions. The restaurant is smart, but in a low-key traditional way, not new wave chic, not too old fashioned either. We didn’t t try much from the menu sadly, and I would love to go back to eat more. We did order three dishes. A wonderful bean stew accompanied by cabbage, morcilla and pickled green chillis. The Morcilla was beautiful. We also tried the hongos(mushrooms) — which I think were ceps. Finally the meat was some of the best I have ever eaten. It was a chuleton(rib) of beef, cooked over coals. Amazing flavour and texture. Just meat, a bone and salt. Oh and a bottle of excellent and not pricey Rioja. Good value at approx € 90 for three people.

Wanted a little bit more upscale versus the tabernas we were frequenting and Zerain fit the bill. We were a bit lost with what to order. The chorizo that came out before we ordered was delicious and the best part of the meal. Service was attentive and accommodating, really top notch. Wine by the glass was limited but the house wine was good. I asked for recommendations and I guess they’re known for their seafood which I wasn’t expecting. I got the recommended fish omelette which sounded like, and indeed was, an odd concept for dinner but it was moist and cooked to perfection. Ribeye was good and they checked to make sure it was cooked to our liking(they tend to cook steaks much rarer than the States in Spain). Cider was okay. Just a decent place and I say A-Ok but again confused why it’s 5 stars on Unilocal

Nice restaurant in the heart of Madrid. Delicious wines and tasty food. The restaurant is famous for its steaks. Tried the Sirloin Steak. The meat was of high quality and tasted really good. But also other meals such as fish and the Tapas were great. If you are in Madrid and if you accept a medium to higher price level I recommend you visit the Zerain.

Amazing food! I think our lunch here lasted 4+ hours. Chorizo con sidra, fresh fish dishes, sidra poured straight from the barrel(by us), etc. I could eat at Zerain every day of my life. It’s also a classy place, providing a worthy respite from the hustle and bustle of downtown Madrid. And the waiters were charming and accommodating, just great. I cannot wait to go back!
