This is a small branch with limited seating located inside Paragon. At the weekend it gets very busy — the need for kopi and kaya seems to be overwhelming at weekends! Seating seems to churn fast so even when busy the wait is short.

This is my regular coffee stop every time I’m in SIngapore. Only today did I decide to try the kaya toast to discover how they skimp on the kaya spread. The kaya was a tiny blotch in the middle with the butter and nothing else on the side. I was basically eating dry toast till I got to the middle. Reconsidering coming here from now on.

Simple yet delicious! When I went to Singapore, I knew I had to get some kaya toast as I can’t get this in LA. With the help of the Singaporean Unilocalers, I found Ya Kun. They have plenty of locations around Singapore, with this one being the closest to my hotel. They have several combos to choose from. I ordered the kaya toast, 2 soft boiled eggs, and kopi(coffee) or milk tea. The kaya toast is actually 2 sandwiches(4 toasts). A decent layer of kaya spread on all 4 pieces of bread, with a nice thick slab of cold butter sandwiched in between. The warm toast slowly melts the butter, giving you a sweet and savory bite! The soft boiled eggs are served still in the shell. You need to break the shell yourself. I ended up breaking my eggs completely and making a mess as the eggwhite was stuck to the egg shells. Dip your kaya toast into the ooey gooey egg yolk and you get the yolk’s richness with the sweet and savory of the kaya and butter. So delicious! I came for several breakfasts while I was in Singapore! They even sell jars of their housemade kaya. Its more expensive than the brands you find at the market, but its super delicious! Remember to bring some back as souvenirs for family and friends!

Order at the counter and they will serve you the drinks first– food later. Kaya(jam/sauce) is iconic in Singapore and is made from pandan, coconut, and other stuff. Apparently they only have it in Singapore and its great with toast– hence the Kaya Toast. Lemon Iced tea– it was sweet but not too sweet(in my opinion) and I really enjoyed it. Kaya toast with two slices of butter– I love butter. When it melted, it created the most delicious combination of kaya, butter, and crispy ish toast. Too bad the toast was cold… my friends said that it should not have been. Kaya french toast with egg– you’re supposed to dip the toast in the kaya on the side, and we thought this one was okay. Not our favorite and it was not done very well. The french toast was kinda soggy and lukewarm and ehh. We meant to order the soft poached egg but my friend ordered wrong. oh well. My friends said that its usually better, and I believe them. The kaya was super good and unique(I’ve never tasted anything like this), hence the four stars. They also mentioned their hong kong(or chinese I forgot) tea is really good, and I would like to try that next time!

Food: Kaya is a jam made from sugar, egg, coconut, butter, and pandan leaf. I tried the kaya toast, sugar butter toast, and kaya french toast. We had some«Sets» that come with coffee and soft boiled eggs. The coffee is very sweet, tastes good. The soft boiled eggs are amazing(not really, but it’s because in the US there is so much Salmonella we can’t eat eggs unless hey are fully cooked, so this is a rare treat for me!)! Note the locals will add black pepper to the eggs and dip the toast into the eggs, which we forgot to do. Also note that the sugar butter toast does not come with kaya! Service: they’ll bring you the toast because it takes a bit longer, you can sip on the coffee and eat the eggs(if you bought the set) while you wait Ambience: the seating is in the middle of the mall. Oh god, we saw a RAT running across the pipes above us while we were eating! Dust and who knows what else could have dropped into my food! Anyway, nothing did as far as I know… that’s why it’s 4 stars
