I always have contempt for restaurants that serve Western food but not even water. Food was lackluster too.

New Harbour Café & Bar reminds me of my Chinese mother’s cooking. Well, when she cooks Western food. Since we’re in Singapore, I want to make it clear that my mom’s Western cooking cannot be compared to a crummy ‘Western’ stall found in hawker centers. My mom’s Western food is much more aligned to what New Harbour Café & Bar offers, Chinese American food. The best example is the steak, lamb chops, pork chops, etc. The meat is fried with oil in a frying pan – a tad or two different than the ones served at Morton’s(grilled and no oil). Yet, fried steak is tasty nonetheless! The meat may not be the quality cut associated with Morton’s but it’s still a pretty decent size and of a certain par. With a bread roll, soup, drink, and some sides, the lunch set is not looking too bad at SGD22. Another way New Harbour Café & Bar cooks up Chinese American food is the veggies: delicious bc they’re SOAKED in butter and garlic. The soup is also very Chinese American – chicken broth with small pieces of chicken and a frozen bag of veggies(peas, corn, carrots, beans chopped into small itty bitty bites). Aww, I miss my mom. New Harbour Café & Bar is definitely comfort food for Asian Americans. A mug of beer still cost an arm and a leg compared to the US, but that home-cooked Western-food-by-your-Asian-immigrant-mother is priceless.

Yummy Clam-y with garlic & chili padi is my gf’s favorite. Me? That’d be their tender steak! Oh there’s roasted pork too. Always full house but serving time is not too long. Great food, great vibe & no GST/service charge to top it off !

Give me tasty pork and I’m happy. There is plenty of tasty pork to be had here – roast pork(CRACKLING) sausages, and plenty of beer to wash it down. We organized a department outing here one Friday evening. We were there fairly early(6pm or so), and had reserved so we had no problems getting service. Food came quickly, beer came even faster, and a good time was had by all. If I wasn’t afraid of a food coma I’d come for lunch!

The New Harbour is always very crowded, and I totally get why. Food served is comforting, reminiscent of a greasy spoon but better — they dish up local flavors such as roast pork and curry too. Typically, you’d not expect a Western joint to be able to plate up Asian cuisine well, but surprise surprise. I’d recommend the white clams — soooo good. Intense hits of garlic, fresh clams, and spicy chili padi. We were left enthusiastically slurping up every bit of the stock, much to our chagrin. Clams, why you so yummy? Drinks selection is good, I usually go for the ciders to wash whatever heavy meal I order down. One complaint is that being next to street, New Harbour is quite«exposed» to the elements. Notably, on one rainy occasion when I was there, a rat ran into the restaurant, resulting in many patrons screaming. It was resultantly chased out by the staff after much scrambling.

If you have a craving for a real steak with Brussels sprouts in gravy or fish and chips, this place will cater for your wishes. The interior looks like an Irish pub, but they also serve some(heavily overpriced) Belgian beers and German ales. Primarily frequented by expats. Prices for the food are relatively reasonable(about 19 for a steak, 13,90 for the grilled dory).
