Monday night. 8:30pm. We have three waiters and waitresses grilling our meat. They cook all types of meat at the same time as opposed to grilling one type of meat, changing the grill with a new one, cooking a second set of meat, changing the grill, cooking the third set, etc. A couple pieces of meat end up burnt. Let’s talk meat. The pork belly(samgyupsal) is decent. On the usual dry and chewy side. While the taste of the marinated short ribs is pretty good and not too sweet, the texture is very chewy. Workout for the jaw. The chicken sausage is mild, reminding me of vegan mock meat. When you eat KBBQ, the meat is always accompanied by a basket of lettuce and other green leaves. Because they are used to wrap your protein in, these leaves are typically«webbed.» Interestingly some of the assorted leaves served at Supulae are more suitable to be eaten alone than as a wrap. In addition the kimchi jeongol was average. Verdict: While Supulae may not serve the best meat in Koreatown Singapore, their prices are more affordable compared to its neighbors. B+ on Ventilation; my hair smelled 20% of KBBQ upon leaving the restaurant. Almost first-date-friendly. Ps: I give three stars for the quality of meat, however because they charge less than their neighbors, it is a plus for some customers. You get what you pay for.

There are plenty of Korean eateries in Tanjong Pagar. But I doubt few would have heard of Supulae as it was a new restaurant in one of the shophouses back in August last year. As it was a party, I lost count of how many sets of BBQ we ordered altogether. Basically, there are two different sets(for 2 pax at $ 48.90); one contains pork and beef, the other pork and chicken. Honestly, I was not attracted by the meat and the marinades were rather average. The seafood and onion pancake($ 20) were generously filled but it was unevenly pan-fried and rather greasy. The Budaejjigae($ 35) was the familiar army pot stew filled with ham, sausage and instant noodles but it did not appeal as the soup lacked the spicy kick. What I liked most is the selection of free flow side dishes that could not make me rest my chopsticks on the table. The cabbage in sesame dressing, stir fry long beans with shrimps and the kimchi were especially outstanding. The cold soba noodles($ 12)-spicy or plain-were a refreshing treat in the rather stuffy room that was not well ventilated as the suction device that was meant to remove any BBQ smell either broke down or was highly inefficient. So at the end of the meal, we left the place smelling like BBQ meat. Anyway, the beer was probably the best part of the meal for my colleagues. Lost track of the number of bottles emptied that night.

The best of the Tanjong Pagar bunch based on the quality of meat and banchan, and the service.

My friends and I were hunting for a good Korean BBQ place in and around Tanjong Pagar area in SIngapore. We saw this place and wanted to try it out. Seems like the proprietress is truly Korean so I think the place can be considered authentic enough. We ordered some korean BBQ pork and chicken as well as Korean pancakes, ginseng chicken soup, Korean ramen noodles. Service was quick and efficient. Food was pretty good too. I especially like the Korean pancakes. I do not really know when this place opened but it seems fairly recent as the restaurant looks pretty clean and the walls are not yet stained by the years and the BBQ soot. Had a bottle of Soju to share with the friends and a bowl of Makgeolli aka Makkoli. Seems like the Makkoli is homemade and very easy to drink so if you are looking for a nice place to drink up Korean alcohol, this is the place. The restaurant is conveniently located opposite the Korean Lotte supermarket as well. Overall we are quite happy with the place although a fair warning, the price is expensive.
