Here’s what you need to know about The Grocer: It opened end March 2013. The easiest way to get there is to come right off the citybound AYE and exit at Portsdown Road and follow Portstdown Road up to Temasek Club and take the first left onto Media Circle and then another left after that to head straight for Mediapolis. For now, don’t believe the road signs for Mediapolis simply because the roads aren’t all operational yet. It does just about everything: sells postage stamps, does dry cleaning and provides the full range of needful things a minimart should have, including supplies for a more than adequate barbecue or grilling experience. It has a very respectable range of craft beers that are chilled and ready to drink at unbelievably reasonable prices. It has a pool table! You are encouraged to choose your own juices, soft drinks, and beers while you place your food orders. No café or bistro I know has a wider selection of beverages… and yes, the glasses are properly chilled and properly paired, as a proper Grocer would. It’s dog friendly… and it’s got a a pool table. And finally… it’s got a pool table! Visit The Grocer just for the sheer surreal thrill of browsing a mama shop that’s also a bottle shop and a jamoneria… with a pool table! Here are some of my personal recommendations: Kiasu Stout. The fine folks at The Grocer have already taken pains to be well stocked with stalwart Germans, cheeky Belgians, fresh Brits and friendly Americans. The least you can do is wear your red and white with some pride and try the home brew; Kiasu Stout from Jungle Beer( ). This is a full-bodied Imperial Stout that will stand on its own very nicely, but you might consider some spicy fries or parma ham with melon for a more robust experience in patriotic tippling. Angus Burger. Just good. Words are so very often inadeaquate to the task of making an epiphany or moment of gastronomic clarity comprehensible, so I won’t even try. Just have it with a good ale, maybe the Weihenstephaner VITUS.
