Conservative Singapore is a country of contradictions when it comes to homosexuality. While male homosexual sex remains illegal in Singapore, homosexuality is openly tolerated. The majority of Singapore’s gay bars are centred around the Chinatown district. Here you will find one of the city’s most popular gay dance clubs — Taboo, which packs in revelers at weekends, who crowd the dance floor to thumping tunes. The night we were there you could barely move to the point of over crowding and being crushed, the drag show was terrific and as there was even a dance /strip completion for the patrons to win a prize. It was a great night out and my best mate one the dance completion. My only concern was after the velvet ropes were removed around the dance floor for the dance competition you couldn’t move and it was uncomfortable due to feeling like you were going to be crushed. If you want a fun night out with plenty of attention hit the Taboo Bar, Singapore’s hottest gay night spot.

Taboo is probably the best club out of all the clubs in the Tanjong Pagar area which cater to folks who choose to live a slightly more alternative lifestyle(yeah, read between the lines and figure it out). It plays the usual top 40 mix that seems to dominate bars and clubs in the area — though they do tend to put in more effort in remixing the songs. That means that yes, while you will get the standard Katy Perry and Lady Gaga songs, these tend to be slightly more amped up, with thumping beats to make them more bearable. There’s a dance floor which tends to be jam packed(especially on Saturdays), and podiums where boys take their tops off and do their best peacock dance to attract a mate. Throw in a liquid buffet that lasts from 10 — 12, and you’ll be hard pressed to find a better way to spend your night. Oh, go in with an open mind of course, and you’ll never know who you’ll leave the club with(:

I’ve had the chance to visit Taboo a handful of times, and while campy as it may sometimes get, it’s actually a lot of fun. A bunch of us will aim to arrive just in time for the liquid buffet, get unbelievably sloshed and stumble out. The dance floor is usually jam packed and it gets deafening, in a good way, dancing to the heavy beats and bass. Of course, if you and your friends get separated, good luck finding them again. Chances are, they may be out back taking a breather or having a smoke. The upstairs is more chill and better to have a proper conversation at. Also good for a rest if one’s ears are ringing or if one is starting to feel the effects of too much liver marinating.
