I’ve always known Sushi Tei to be a Japanese restaurant of higher quality so i was surprised to see the outlet at West Coast not exactly living up to its reputation. When our order of pork katsu was served, we were quite taken aback by the rather charred looking dish; it was as if they refried it multiple times before serving. The manager(of all people) was the person who served the dish so she very quickly said she will bring us a new one and we were glad we asked for it. the new katsu came perfect in golden brown crust and was really delicious. The tempura looked pale and was served without the dipping sauce. When highlighted to the staff who served us, he told us that the sauce is not available. we looked at him in disbelief and he quickly muttered that he’ll ask the kitchen and disappeared. soon the manager came running with our dipping sauce. I’m thankful that at least she’s trying to salvage what’s left of our impression of the outlet.

Sushi Tei isn’t amazing but it is dependable and good enough. I always have the katsu udon or the katsu curry udon, which is my favourite from this place. The chawanmushi is good too!

Good olé dependable Sushi Tei. I like this outlet as the service is great. Always the same familiar faces. A well staffed outlet. I’m always impressed by how many cooks are working behind the kitchen. I like that it’s an open kitchen as well — that always keeps the cooks accountable to the diners! Food is consistently good too. No complaints at all!

The Sushi Tei for NUS students. I can’t remember if they still have promotions for NUS students(I recall they used to have) but if they do then worth coming here if you have a NUS matriculation card. Quality of food and service standards are about the same as all other Sushi Tei’s in Singapore but this place somehow does not have those long snaking lines as compared to those in perhaps Vivocity or Tampines Mall. So, if you want a Sushi Tei in the west where the queues are shorter, this is the place to go. Get the Salmon Sashimi with Sushi Tei dressing which is a good appetizer /starter or can even function as a full meal if you’re not a big eater. If you like shellfish, go for the hotate miso mayo that’s basically mussels baked in a cheesy-mayo sauce. Other things to try are the dragon roll, curry cutlet rice, beef sukiyaki, cawanmushi, and special unagi roll that comes with thick slabs of grilled eel
