Went in for Sunday brunch for two, about an hour after they opened. First problem, they won’t give you water unless you pay $ 7 for a bottle. To me, this is a deal-breaker. Second problem, ordered a ginger spritzer drink that was bitter and gross. When we told the server that there seemed to be a problem with it, he responded that we were wrong and that it was exactly how it was meant to be. I said that there was no way someone could intentionally make this drink, he just repeated his prior response. I asked to speak to a manager, and he said he was the manager. He offered to get us a replacement, but we just had it taken off the bill. Final problems, when the food arrived. I’d asked for eggs over-easy(no runny white, runny yellow), but they came overcooked(fried eggs). Bacon was deep-fried, which ruins the bacon as it replaces the normal flavors with whatever cheap oil is used for the vat. Salad had a light dressing on it, but it had absolutely no flavor. Chiabata toast was cold, dry, and very small. Sausage was a hot dog. I think that we aren’t the only people that have found this place disappointing — We were the first people there, and only one other single customer came in while we were there. I wanted to like this place, but the food and service was horrible.

I’ve been here twice now for brunch. Both times the chicken and waffles were on point. The food came insanely quick. I almost though it was for another table, and there must be some mistake. It’s a little out of the way, as the closet MRT is Clarke Quey. But it’s almost to your benefit as there never seems to be a long wait and the service is snappy.

What a great find! The Swiss born chef has new and inventive ways to eat pub food. Take for instance Beer but chicken. Here it is call Beer and Chicks and it is for a group of 4 – 6 people and you can get it Singapore(Cooked with a Tiger beer) Dutch(Cooked with a Heineken) or Irish(With Guiness) Brilliant! My husband had the hamburger made with fried mac and cheese as the bun(yes I said it a mac and cheese friend in a bun form!) bacon, tomato, gherkin pickle and onion rings. It was absolutely outstanding! The flavors all blended together perfectly, it was a party in your mouth! I had the Smoked chicken salad with green apple slices, beats, and goat cheese. This was some of the freshest lettuce I have had in a long time. Smoked Chicken was very well done and not too smokey. Nice wine list with some bottles over $ 100.00 which is a bit much for this casual place. Interior is rustic and home like. In the back check out the painting of the colorful bird. I am not sure what specific bird it is but it is well drawn and the colors are beautiful. More people need to know about this place, it is definatly worth the find!

So wow I’ve been waiting to try this place. Initial impressions… I’m a sucker for aesthetics and this place nails it! Great décor, I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves, but for one thing the rustic interior reminds me of the Ruin Pubs I loved so much in Budapest(yep…kinda random) Now onto the food… I saw iced chocolate Nutella on the menu and I just had to try it. It did not disappoint(the scale was the only one disappointed after), since it’s brunch I had to try out the restaurants take on Chicken and waffle. Normally, in most soul food restaurants this would be your standard fluffy waffle with some aunt jemimah maple syrup and fried chicken. Spathe’s take is truly different in a every best way. Chicken was not overly fried so it did not feel cheap(please view the photo) and had really nice flavor with some spice. The Belgian waffle was so nice and fluffy. Missing from the equation is your normal maple syrup, instead the waffle has the secret sauce used for the chicken, like a gravy of sorts, resulting in a real savory dish. I did not have any room for dessert after this, but since this place is just downstairs from my flat, I’ll be making repeat visits for sure!!!

Walking into the eatery, you could instantly feel a sense of comfort and tranquility. Spathe Public House was very well designed to make the place cozy with a touch of cottage feel. My friend and I ordered the Lobster Burger(which was not reflected on the menu), the 12 Hour Slow-Cooked Pork Belly and Buffalo Drumlets to share. The Burger had salsa dressing, hash brown, avocado slices and a very succulent lobster piece in between the sandwiched Squid Ink buns. It was a good combination and best eaten when served. Otherwise, the buns may turn soggy. The lobster was not at all hard to chew. It was tender and tasty. Ask the friendly staff for this beautiful creation since it is not available on the menu! The Pork Belly was perfectly cooked. The gravy poured over it did not overpower the taste of the Pork Belly which was important to have a balance of both. Puréed Mash Potatoes gave a good texture to the Pork Belly and I enjoyed it a lot. We ordered a side of Buffalo Drumlets to share which had about six pieces. It was not too spicy nor salty. Despite only trying the drumlets after our main course, the drumlets did not turn dry or sour. Our total bill coughed up to about $ 102 after ordering an Avocado Smoothie, Gingerale, and a slice of Red Velvet Cake to celebrate my friend’s birthday. They decorated the Red Velvet slice with Nutella all over the plate with a happy birthday greeting to my friend. The cake tasted moist and light, although nothing special to make me jump out of my seat. It was a good option to have after our hearty meal though. Overall, our experience at Spathe Public House was great. We would definitely return to try more dishes on the menu. The staff was friendly and approachable too so we gave them a good tip!

There is a advertisement outside«we hire chef, kitchen staff, service,.» and this is a great idea. I never had a thinner steak as there and the food as itself is average if I judge with good mood. Sitting outside(maybe still a pioneer thing in Singapore) it took me one knock at the glass door that the waiter took my order and two more knocks to get my wine and finally the bill. But as all look new and surely the staff was untrained(hopefully they not look again for new ones) — I will try again there.

Before coming here, I called to make reservations for two, ad was told there are two seatings for dinner; 630pm and 830pm. If you make reservations for 630pm, you have to vacate your table by 830pm, which is rather impractical as most people don’t come off work early all the time, especially on a Friday night. I opted for the 830pm seating instead, choosing to come at 9pm. Despite Spathe being billed as a group-share food kinda place, I found that a party of two was quite alright to try a couple of things. I highly recommend the tuna poke, which was cubes of tuna in a yuzu vinaigrette, topped with avocado and fried leeks. Man, this is heaven in cubes of fish. I would come back and eat a few portions of just this. We also had the garlic fries, which was just as good as everyone raved it to be. I liked the mussels, but my companion didn’t quite like it. There were about 5 closed mussels in our single portion, so I wasn’t too happy with that. The red sauce with onions was okay for me, nothing to shout about though. We also had a salad — the stuffed mushroom one, which I hated because there was too much vinaigrette on it, whereas my companion felt it was okay had most of it. It came in a giant bowl, so I suggest it be ordered in a group of three or more, unless you have a salad-chomping man at your table. Desserts were a waffle with nutella and chocolate ice-cream, and a lemon meringue tart. I was rather disappointed to learn they only had two flavors of ice-cream, the other flavor being Hokey Pokey, which is some sort of candy floss ice-cream. I always thought vanilla ice-cream was a mainstay at most places, but okay… The lemon meringue tart was a complete failure — the custard was an overload on egg yolk. It wasn’t for me. My waffle? Not too bad, but could have done with more Nutella and none of that CoolWhip nonsense. Drinks! I had a watermelon lemonade, which was supposed to have vodka inside, but had no alcohol inside whatsoever. Not that it really matters — I loved the drink and it was so pretty. My companion had a beer, and Spathe has a good range of beers to choose from, which is important for a group-eat place I suppose. Would I come back? Perhaps. Just for the tuna poke and maybe the mussels. And the ambience.

Had been craving a steak while I was working overnight and found this place on a list of recommended restaurants. I was here on a friday night, it was kinda crowded and we got one of those awkward seats lining the entrance/corridor on bar stools — not the most comfortable place to sit, but decent considering that we went without reservations.(The booth-like seats at the back of the restaurant looked quite cosy too, and good for large groups) So I had the steak(grilled australian grain fed rib eye) and my dining companion had the spathe australian angus burger. My steak came decent and cooked to the correct tenderness(I’d requested for medium rare), but nothing out of this world. My dining companion’s burger was palatable but we’ve had better. Fries were fried with garlic I think, which was a nice touch. Ended up eating all my fries(and my dining companion’s extras hahaha)(I usually skip the fries at most places). I thought that the portions were a bit small for the price, but ended up feeling satiated — but I don’t have a huge appetite to begin with, so be warned. The décor of the place was nice but nothing extraordinary, the usual industrial chic that seems to be in vogue nowadays. All in all, a decent, safe place to be having a dinner, but don’t expect anything out-of-this-world. Good if you happen to be in the area but I wouldn’t travel specially for this place. Next!

sigh, meh. it’s a friday and I’d hate to be depressing, but the food here falls right into the new-café-with-uninspiring-food category. it’s not the easiest café to get too, especially if you’re on public transport, impractical heels and under the(darn-it-still-blistering-) hot sun that so hates loves us in singapore. and at the end of the trip, to be smacked met with a lackluster brunch — well, it doesn’t make one cheery at having got up early, eh? the best part of this meal was that they topped up my nutella without charging me anything, and service can be pretty friendly(when present). it’s not really that this place is SO bad, but it did make me feel at the end of it a sort of bleakness at the multitude of sub-par brunches I’ve had recently. my waffle here was anaemic and sort of floppy, with a sort of limpness I associate with bad neighborhood-bakery style waffles(which at least charge far less); but at least it came with a decent(and then a second) serving of plain nutella(none of that nasty frosting some place like to serve instead). there were croque madames, and truffle fries and fried chicken waffles strewn across the table — and while it’s certainly an inspiring menu, it didn’t quite leave us with that great an impression. I would say, good if you’re in the area, good if you’re parked near, and good if you want a slightly quietish place for brunch(kid-friendly, I would think). prices aren’t outrageous, and portions veer on the just-a-bit-more-and-it’d-be-small-but-okay side.

I want to pronounce this place as «Spathe»(rhymes with«bathe») but I’ve been told it’s pronounced«Spath»(rhymes with«math».) The«e» at the end is throwing me off! Miguel and I came here for Unilocal’s Monthly Brunch Club meeting and it was a good time as always! We occupied the big table in the back, even though a lot of our friends were unable to show up due to last minute changes. :(Regardless, it was nice to see everyone, especially newbies Haywood and May! Back to Spath(I refuse to add an «e» at the end from now on) — I liked the overall ambiance of the place; a bit upscale but still very much relaxed. The 1⁄3 New Yorker in me approves of the exposed brick wall with the cool hummingbird spray painted on it. For Saturday brunch, it wasn’t too packed, perhaps because of its quiet location on Mohamed Sultan Road. Food-wise, I was the Lone Ranger, ordering a Croque Madame while everyone else ordered chicken and waffles or one of the other Belgian waffle varieties. I think I should’ve ordered that instead, as everyone seemed to be raving about the chicken. Still, my croque Madame was tasty, though not life changing. I like how it came with a healthy portion of garlic fries, which I couldn’t finish! To balance out the savory, we(meaning Ricky S. and I) ordered their dessert(s) of the day. They had a few different cakes and pies to choose from, so we decided on red velvet along with Key Lime. I personally wasn’t a fan of the red velvet cake(even though it was my choice) — there wasn’t much taste to it. Maybe it was old? Unlike my meal at Bochinche, I did leave Spath with a full tummy, so I was happy about that. Overall, I didn’t experience anything special here, but for the portions and ambiance, it’s a decent place to visit for a western style brunch.

They had me at chicken and waffles. Their take is unique in that they have a very light and fluffy waffle topped with deep fried chicken cutlet that has a subtle spicy kick to it. The meat content of the chicken pieces were sparingly small with most of the substance of the chicken pieces being fat or very thick, crispy chunks of the fried batter skin. Everything is drenched in mornay sauce. I would have preferred syrup for the sweet/savory mix :) I was slightly disappointed by the dish b/c I was expecting real pieces of fried chicken like a drumstick and wing. Would I go out of my way to have the dish again? Probably not, although I recommend everyone try it once for the experience. The Spathe venue is pretty cool with exposed brick walls, spray painted art on the concrete/brick walls.

I came here not expecting much… brunch fatigue from all the many«must visit» places, so I was seriously wowed by the food. Not so much the prices. It was crowded when I got there, thank goodness friends had already snagged a table(only high tables were available then) so there was no wait. Service was prompt in taking orders, serving food and removing the empty plates. Being a Sunday, it was brunch menu and the mammoth dishes for sharing were not available. I had the waffle with chicken leg and it was surprisingly good. The fried chicken leg was already sliced up and placed over the waffle with mornay sauce. It would be excellent if the waffle was sufficiently crisped up. Instead it was a pale and soft waffle. I think I like it much because it reminded me of the country fried steak & eggs with pancakes I had in IHOP. But the best thing on the menu is actually the garlic fries. Nothing beats hot off the fryer fries, and these fries were generously sprinkled with roasted garlic bits which just amped up the oomph factor. If you are tired of the ubiquitous truffle fries served in many places, the garlic fries are a good change. Eggs royale looked and tasted normal, which was probably better than saying it was horrible. The croque madame was also delightful. It looked very appetizing with a perfect sunny side up egg on the bread. Definitely one of the better places for brunch or food. Drinks are a bit on the high side. $ 8 for a tiny glass of juice? $ 16-$ 18 for cocktails.

The name conjured images of Greek, Spartan and communal dining. I was intrigued when I first stumbled upon this place from web searches and even more intrigued when a colleague highly recommended me to try this place. And so I did, on a Monday evening. It was pretty quiet for a Monday, as expected, but the waitress politely asked for a reservation so she could pick a nice 2-seater table for us. Loved the way she handled my telephone inquiry — first impression is important and she gave me a five-star service. Upon entering the place, the staff were all smiles and were very accommodating to my on every query about the menu. I must say that they were chatty(in a good way of course) and were stellar on their recommendations. Verdict: — Garlic Fries — No doubt this has to be one of the best-tasting fries I’ve ever tasted, tying for 1st place with Long John Silver’s Fries. Though thinner in size, it was fried twice and the second fry included garlic paste which gave the entire ensemble an added edge. Still tasted as good when it’s cool, but it would be better if you could finish the entire basket while it is still piping hot. It’s a must-have dish for each table. — Charcoal-smoked Tomato Soup — Best Tomato Soup ever tasted. The whispers of smoked charcoal brought out the earthy tones of the tomato flavour really well. The same could not be said of the 2 pcs of cheese balls in the soup which somehow left a weird plastic aftertaste. Nonetheless, I would order this soup again. — Beef Lagsana — I heard that the pasta was a tad soggy on another review site but I gave it a go anyway and I wasn’t disappointed. You know how some lagsana dishes come in a size too large and you get sick of the dish halfway through as the portion is just too much. Well, this dish was just right. Great combination of beef, pasta and cheese. Thumbs up! — Spathe Chicken — I had a few bites of this Chicken and while the meat wasn’t very tasty or salty, this dish still has my nod of approval. Soft on the inside and crispy skin on the outside, the dash of thyme, lime and fresh garlic gave a delicious twist to each bite of chicken. — Cappucino — Smooth and full-bodied. The milk on top was cool but evens out well by the hot coffee below as you take a tentative sip; was okay to me but might not be acceptable to coffee connoisseurs. — Lemon Meringue Tart — Well, I have been on the search for the best Lemon Meringue Tart and have thrown Epicure’s list out the window(literally) and this cinches the no.2 spot on my list. Just the right amount of icing, lemon and tart all-in-one. How’d you know the tart is good? — it won’t be so hard that you have to slice it with a knife(like Jone’s the Grocer’s). How’d you know the icing and lemon proportion is just right? — when you can savor both at the same time without feeling as though you’ve just had a bite of sugar. There’s an on-going promotion for S$ 35++ for free flow of Sangria(pitcher) for 2 hours — good for groups on a Friday night. Gave myself a pat on the back for trying this place on a Monday night and quite glad to know that it’s only a 5 minute walk along the tranquil Robertson Quay/Mohamed Sultan route from my office. This place comes highly recommended and I will definitely be back! Tip: Try going on a Monday evening as there is no crowd at all save for a few 1 – 2 tables. Really quiet and nice atmosphere to catch-up or have a peaceful evening to wind down a Monday.

Spathe Public House first made its blip in my food radar with its«Mammoth Signatures» concept. Who doesn’t love ordering plates of food twice the size of your head? Can’t deny that the idea is to share la, but it’s always open to you to knock your friends out. Spathe Garlic Fries, $ 8++ — The garlic fries were served first, and right off the bat we knew this place was going to be a keeper. Freshly fried strips of potato infused with the smokey aroma of roasted garlic, and lightly dusted with paprika powder… mmm. These were ridiculously moreish, and I actually prefer them to the(usually poorly cooked) truffle fries that have suddenly become a thing in hipster restaurants these days. Sous Vide Spanish Octopus Salad, $ 42++ for mammoth portion(feeds 4 to 6) — The salad here at Spathe was nothing short of amazing. The octopus was perfectly grilled and pleasantly chewy. Citrusy notes from orange slices went well together with the tangy mustard vinaigrette dressing used, and both lifted the overall flavour of the salad without being overpowering. $ 42++ gives you a mammoth portion, which fed the 4 hungry girls in my party very well. Individual servings available at $ 22++. Mohammed Sultan Meter Dog, $ 18++ for an individual portion — If the individual portion’s anything to go by, I can say for sure that I’ll be back for the metre long version. The veal and chicken wurst encased in the buttered bun was incredibly juicy, fulfilling the basic requirement for any self-respecting dog. Drizzled with wasabi mayonnaise and specked with what appeared to be paprika powder as well(which is what I call any orange colored powder, by default), the lightly curried wurst was just a little spicy. I would have liked for the sweetness of the caramelized onions to be tamped down a little, though. Spathe Australian Angus Burger, $ 22++ — Spathe also does a great burger. The handmade beef patty tasted fresh, tender and juicy. Together with a fried egg, red pepper chutney and a brioche bun, it was an exquisite combination. Cajun spiced fries served on the side were decent, but definitely paled in comparison with the addictive garlic fries we’d polished off at the start of the meal. Spathe Public House serves delicious food at reasonable — well, as reasonable as hipster food prices get — prices, which makes it a winner in my book. Great venue for some catching up too. Service was excellent the evening we visited as well as the following day when we contacted them about a wrong item we had been billed for. I’m already planning to return for brunch.

A communal approach to dining? Ah, what a better way to share and enjoy the meal! Spathe offers individual options, but the best way is to truly go all out and come with a bunch of people. I arrived with 7 hungry others, so I was def. prepared and ready to defend my waistline. We shared the Octopus Salad, which we all agreed was the best thing on the menu! The octopus was fresh and was delicious with the citrus orange slices and fried shallots and that tangy mustard vinaigrette. A KEEPER! From there, some of us ordered the Yellow Fin Tuna Poke, Confit Duck Puff, Belgian Waffle & Fried Chicken, and the lunch special. The tuna was nice, but not worthy of its $ 18 price tag. The yuzu vinaigrette didn’t complement the small chunks of tuna as nicely as I hoped. Given that that the dish was smaller than the size of my palm, a definite PASS. The same went for the Confit Duck Puff – nice, but the taste of the duck wasn’t quite distinguishable and was a bit too dry for my liking. PASS. Now, for the winner: FRIEDCHICKENANDWAFFLES! Yes, order this! Yes, yes, YES! The first fried chicken and waffle I’ve ever laid my eyes on in Singapore, did fried chicken and waffle justice! My Roscoe’s folks, don’t worry, no maple syrup here, but don’t fear… Spathe offers bacon(+$ 2), cheese(+$ 2) and a sunny side egg(+$ 2) for good measure!(«MOREBACON!!!») This dish was quite heavy and good-sized, so I suggest going communal on this one. The lunch special, $ 17 for two courses or $ 19 for three courses, was a stealer. We also shared a carrot cake and red velvet cake… meh, not a place I would return for the desserts. The latte wasn’t bad though. SUM: Order the Octopus Salad, FRIEDCHICKENANDWAFFLES, and Lunch Special if possible. If you’re a couple, the first two options will do justice to that waistline.

A casual spot — reflect the most of its characteristic in its interior — stone bricks lined all four walls accompanied by raw cemented flooring and graffiti spanning across the dining area. The hall is contrasted by some polished tiles fronting the entrance, drop down bulb lightings and pale counter cabinets that blend its rustic vibe with some modernism. With that, I am waiting to examine the mosaic ideas of fusing the classics with a modern twist in Chef Claudio Sandri European menu with an American-accent. The menu board is sectioned into individual portion, mammoth servings along with greens, small bite selections and desserts. Not overly extensive but the available dishes make good numbers to pick from for the first time. We started off with some fresh artichoke greens, crispy asparagus that were softly crimsoned by the capsicum. My taste bugs are wakened up by the tangy tapenade dressing in this Spathe Salad, with a faint olive touch. The extra crunch from the deep fried egg upped its uniqueness while the gluey yolk in within gelled well with its surrounding«garden» for a modest S$ 16. These wings had succeeded in lifting me up, inches before hitting the roof ceiling. They may looked sorry, something that you wouldn’t want to reach out when placed next to a bowl of Cajun Spiced Garlic Fries but their taste was astonishingly memorable. Haggard-looking with its charred surface but the wings were not drying out. Interiorly still moist and deepened by its robust smokey flavour, the good proportion in the use of paprika has brought justice to this famed New Yorker dish. The skin was neither rubbery nor greasy, this is one of the prized element that delights me — Spicy Buffalo Wings — S$ 15, are not to miss. The Weekend Brunch Menu is another piece of option you never want to pass up. The all-time-favourite among the page long dishes — Belgian Waffle — that comes with 7 different variations. I can’t stomach all in a go and so I had picked a savory plus a sweet version. The Crispy Chicken Leg topping was a success — well-seasoned, not leathery — exclusively pairing up the rich buttery«griddle-disc» cake, drizzled in Béchamel sauce. There was a very light cheesy taste in the white sauce, adding a fairy touch to the otherwise ordinary condiment. The waffle has been highly praised for its leavened nature and fluffiness. It took really long before it finally gets landed on our communal table. The name has it — 12 hour Slow-Cooked Pork Belly — it was forgiven for the long wait. It has a noticeable porky flavour but not awful. The pork meat lined with a thin caramelised skin, managed to retain much of it moisture, was baby tender. I love the buttery mashed potato that has been partially laced by the wine sauce, not overwhelming in taste. The poach egg makes the individual portion at S$ 24, a good fill for anyone with a reasonable appetite. Spathe’s Signature — Mohamed Sultan Meter-Dog — sold in mammoth and individual servings, is a hot-favourite. We had a mammoth size to feed our group of 6 and it has been genuinely sizeable. Though its tag seems hefty at S$ 55, each of us only cough up barely $ 10 given a 6-pax sharing. For that minimal price, I get a good quarter of the tasty sausage made with Veal & Chicken and spiced up with wasabi and curry, shoving in between a soft sliced bun, lightly toasted. A handful of leafy greens to tone down any excessive sentiment in the dish(if any). This portion is a better option to an individual one that is going at S$ 18, if you have a bigger group to share out instead of having it alone. The meter-dog may be popularly voted, but the Duck Confit Puff has aced the meal! In essence, this flakey pastry puffed dish is the winner today. The well-seasoned and cooked duck confit mirror the velvety texture of the old-classic pulled pork, less gamey. The meat was not exceedingly greasy, and cut through very well with the buttery nature in the airy puff pastry. I could whiffed the sweet caramel in the slow-cooked onions that cushioned the obese looking puff. This — the best dish — that I titled without biased, has billed me for S$ 38. We washed down the meal with a jug of Watermelon Lemonade — very refreshing and thirst quenching. The only regret is that disturbing tiny fruit seeds. But I am missing out on the claimed Vodka content and it wasn’t as bubbly as soda. 8 of us gets a small glass for a S$ 55/jar. Generally, Spathe is a great spot for a causal hang out. It may be out of place and less reachable without MRT but any other wheeled vehicles, it is a place that I may recommend to others who hope to get a taste of the American-European mixed menu in a friendly environment. It has been pleasant in terms of taste but the occasion can be made perfect if not for the double swiped incident on our card during the payment that put our S$ 300+ accidentally on-hold for 10 business days!
