I dont understand… how can a French bakery bake goods that taste so bad? I’ve tried Sophie twice and each time I felt cheated. The croissants were too soft and chewy – not flaky at all! In fact, my croissants didn’t taste like croissants, more like buttered rolls. My chocolate croissant was better, well, because it had chocolate. I ate the chocolate middle and chucked the rest into a bin. The cheese bun was a disgrace. It was barely cheesy. For a true pain au fromage, I recommend Maison Kayser. As for the good, I recommend the tarts! The peach tartly was heavenly, and the Logan one was worth a mention as well. Service was quite decent… a pity the bread wasn’t.

Sophie is on my way to work so it’s always very tempting to stop by. They did a great job to recreate the French bakery vibe: you cannot stay away too long from the vintage music and the smell that goes out of this place. But what happen next? I have mixed feelings regarding the quality of what they sell. Unfortunately you need to be lucky… timing is very important with Sophie and contrary to most of French bakery, buying your Pain au chocolat or your croissant in the morning will not be the guarantee to get a fresh and tasty one… That’s too bad. One last thing, they don’t know how to make Mocha. I guess it happens to the best… but I don’t get why they add SOMUCH sugar in it. I wasn’t able to finish it, first time for me with a $ 6.5 coffee… So if you need a coffee with your croissant, you may look for another place ;)

I’m a sucker for bread with cheese. The cheese bun here is great, cheese bits melted in with doughy white bread, all for the price of $ 1.50! The chocolate croissants are decent at $ 2.50. I haven’t tried the tarts and was looking for the apple crumble per the photo on Unilocal, but they were nowhere to be seen. Guess I gotta go back and try it out. During lunchtime it is madness, people snatching at the breads. If you go later, around 2:30pm, a lot of the breads would be sold out already, so early bird gets the goodies!

Okay I have to admit I just sampled and left but it’s super crowded so I’m guessing it must be gd! Authentic French bakery. Really soft and fluffy white choc chip bun, as was the normal choc chip bun, and the pain au chocolat tasted quite authentic too :) $ 2 macarons! and various other tarts, cakes and baked goodness! will be back for more.
