Simpang Niang Tofu($ 4/pax) is actually cooked in the Gong Bao Style but turns out to be not spicy at all. The gravy is darker, slightly sweeter and more fragrant since it has been infused with dried chilli. Another difference is that all the ingredients have been deep– fried, so you can’t miss that crunchy chewy bite in each nugget of either wonton/fish ball/stuffed green pepper etc… The pieces are made smaller than the usual size and cut into half, and thus more convenient for diners. Their Kang Kong relied on a lot of hae bee but still leaned more towards the sweet side and lacked the spicy kick. Assam Fish Head $ 22 is huge. The fish head was submerged in a sea of red orange gravy that is thicker, slightly sweeter than the usual ones. The tartness of tomatoes which complements the Assam flavor makes this an appetizing dish. However, the fish was not very fresh. This place located in Bedok can be quite far for some people but it is definitely worth making the trip down for their Yong Tau Foo and Pork Kuckles! Service is pretty fast and before you know it, the entire table will be laid with all the yummy dishes!

I overate. And it wasn’t hard to do it. This place was Dad’s idea — he said, «Hey do you have time for lunch? Let’s go to lunch.» and I said, «Okay, where to?» He said, «You know the Simpang fried yong tau foo? They moved to Changi Road, so I want to try.» So I said, «Okay lor.» So we went. And when we got there just after 12pm, it was already packed. What madness is this? Upon closer inspection, the signboard was covered with lots of pictures of different food items… was this a tze char in disguise? The two of us got a seat pretty quickly, and Dad went to town with the menu, then realised that if it’s just the two of us, we couldn’t eat that much could we? But one thing was for certain; that pork knuckle caught his eye. Yeah I know what you’re thinking… PORKKNUCKLE?! AT A YONGTAUFOOPLACE?! I say once you see it, you’ll know what Dad wanted it: So clearly, if I have a picture, it means we ordered it, and we ate it. And we finished it. On top of our two-person yong tau foo with kway teow-mee. Yes, we dominated at lunch. I don’t remember much of what happened after we stepped out… I just know that I drove home, and had to lie down. The end.
