I’m with Eileen G. in trying to quench the fire of my unrequited longing for Luke’s Lobster, but sadly, despite the highest hopes, Platypus just didn’t do it for me. The beauty of a real New England Lobster roll is that the sweet fresh flavor of the Lobster takes center stage. I found Platypus’ version, while reasonably priced, simply over spiced to completely nullify the flavor of the lobster. It didn’t help that we had atrocious service, inattentive, uneven and apathetic. We had to beg to order, several things were sold out(including the off menu uni lobster roll and the truffle mac and cheese) and one main came 10 minutes before the other. When the tray with the first roll was unceremoniously clattered on the table, we had to wheedle the type out of the waiter. He glanced at it and said«modern», so I pushed it over to El Queso Grande. Then when the second one arrived, we again asked what kind and this time he glared at it for a hard twenty seconds and said«modern». When we dared protest that this was a different roll than the first, he dogmatically replied, «OK, that first one was traditional and the new one is modern, that’s what I told you before»… Of course, by this point, the first roll was already half eaten… Still no apology was offered… Adding to the calamitous meal were the poor acoustics, which amplified the nearby Friday night girls night table’s giggling into terrifying hyena hunting levels. PARTINGTHOUGHT: Platypus might be better off seeing up cafeteria style… Lobster rolls don’t require waiter service, especially when the service standard is this lackluster

Friday evening dinner — 6.30pm. I tried to reserve for 2 the night before but no slot was available. Okay, my bad — i was tardy. Turned up the next day anyway and every single table had the dreaded«Reserved» signage — odd since most restaurants would reserve a few for walk-in customers. Condition to get a table was to leave within an hour — fair enough for me!(Many others who showed up apparently did not do any reservations as well and managed to get a table like how we did) Get the Crustacean Bowl — you have 2 option of serving sizes«appetizer» or «main». Friendly waiter commanded that I get one serving as it sells out every day and as a reward for being an early customer Haha charming. After my first bite, I declare this my go-to comfort food. It’s so gooey(melted cheese), the caviar gave it enough salt and there is more lobster on this bowl then the rolls. Warning: Do not be deceived by the serving size. Looks small(even for the«main» size) but it’s rich, I was sufficiently full eating this. Partner ordered Spicy Garlic Lobster Roll. The set comes with chips — we both agreed it tasted exactly like Calbee chips with a tiny sprinkling of truffle oil. Oh and a side of greens. The highlight of the roll was the bread — so buttery, crunchy and slightly crisp on the outside. The lobster though was overpowered by the garlic flakes — we couldn’t really make out whether we were eating lobster or other seafood. In all fairness, that’s our mistake — we should have ordered The Traditional which simply poach the lobster meat with butter, lots of butter. We’ll be back for sure, with a larger crowd, with reservation made 4 – 5 days in advance :)

Where do you go if you are craving for a Luke’s Lobster Roll in Singapore? Well, the closest to those yummy lobster roll that you can find in states would probably be the ones at Platypus Lobster Shack. They have a range of different types of lobster roll with add-ons for you to choose. However, I always stick to the traditional type with an add-on of their uni crème. What I love most about it(besides the tasty lobster-filling) is the bun. The bun is done to perfection(or rather, close to perfection). Every bite is just delightful. I would say that this is probably the best yet in town.
