This hard to find little corner on the second floor of one of Chinatown’s most labyrinthine hawker centers has quickly become my go-to spot for a good drink. I used to spend my weekly allowance on a few pints at Smith Street Taps right around the corner, but after discovering On Tap and their original brews for a fraction of the price, I think I’ve found my regular spot. I feel like it’s my duty to tell people about places like this. There’s more to life than Tiger beer, people! So much more!

I tried several micro breweries in Singapore while I was there and find them to be mediocre. However, this one stood out to me. Located in a old food court building in China town and tucked away int he corner. This place is by far the best microbrewery in town. I like their English Bitter. Which is the best on tap in my opinion. Spent some time talking to the owner Patrick as well. He definitely got passion for this trade, that is probably why his beer tasted much better than another microbrewery I visited in Singapore.

On Tap serves their own beer, brewed in good old Bukit Batok! The wheat beer and English bitter are decent but stay away from the German Dunkel. Achtung! It tastes like someone melted down some Chinese herbal candy. Having said that, this place is the cheapest of all three craft beer places in the vicinity.

On Tap was our 3rd stop at the 335 Smith Street, and it’s another gem! As our last stop and one that was unplanned, we were only able to sample 3 of their beers, but they were all quite good. The best was perhaps the English bitter. Te brown ale was on the lighter side but still good. And the Pilsner was also solid. The beer here is unpasteurized, sort of like Starker’s approach. But I found the beers here much more flavorful. And also quite a steal — at $ 6 per glass! I would love to see them do an IPA, and they are in the process of setting up a proper full service brew pub in the Esplanade, which I am looking forward to. While I still prefer my hoppy American IPAs, I really enjoyed the beer at On Tap and will definitely be back.
