The concept for OSD is really cool — my friend and I had a fun time exchanging tales and games from our childhood days. Service is friendly and fast, and the prices were reasonable. The food was a little lacking though — I had a nasi lemak, but the rice, ikan bilis and chilli were a little too salty. The chicken wings and egg were nice though. After the mains, my friend and I had a sticky chocolate cake. It was decadent and not too sweet. The accompanying ice cream was disappointing however, and too fluffy when going alongside the cake. Would recommend for the environment and ambience, but really for the food.

Tasty food lovely setup of the props etc. Price is reasonable. But only suitable for big groups. As they have old school games to play with your friends. But be prepared to be shouting during your meals. As it’s more for groups hanging out for a game and secondary for meals. Which is a bit of a pity because their food is not too bad. Will not be back If I just want a meal. But will be back If I’m with my big group of friends to scream the hell out of everyone here. Cakes look good but I couldn’t stay on to try for another minute of the noisy ambience.

I first knew of Old School Delights(OSD) on FB all because people were sharing its photos of games kids growing up in the 60s-80s(maybe 90s too) used to play i.e. 5 stones, old maid card game, donkey card game, eraser«flag» war etc. I just did not have the time or the inclination to make the trip to upper thomson to check out OSD till recently. Upper Thomson has changed a fair bit with so many new eateries and shops in the row of shophouses across from Thomson CC. You know when you have to travel all the way just to eat something, the food better be good otherwise it would be a wasted trip. And I must say it was absolutely worth it. I love OSD! From the décor(simple and a bit industrialized look) to the food, OSD passed with flying colors. The only area which could be better would be service, but it was very minor. One of the staff(maybe she was hired only to clean the table) could not understand my query when I asked if there was any available table indoors. Her colleague came over and swiftly took over. They were full indoors but a table would be freeing up soon. We were asked if wewould like to look at the menu and place our order(writing it on the small portable whiteboard with marker) first while waiting. There were things to occupy your time while waiting besides perusing the menu. You could take a mini walk down memory lane by looking at the vintage stuff displayed on the shelves next to the counter. Or you could whet your appetite by drooling over the traditional cakes displayed on the counter. At the table, you could kill time by playing the games in the toy box placed on each table. Re-live your childhood or create new childhood memories. Food: Chicken wing — very good, it stayed crispy and warm despite us attacking it after finishing our noodles. Mee siam — apparently this was from the owner’s grandmother’s recipe and my friends liked it Mee rebus — thick flavorful gravy over yellow noodles. It was good but I still preferred the version in Parkway Parade old food court(not sure if it is still around now). Pulut — excellent. generous hae bee hiam(dried spicy shrimp) filling inside the sticky rice which was served warm. Otah — quite normal, nothing too special. Banana chocolate fudge cake — moist banana cake with mashed bananas in the middle and covered with sticky chocolate fudge. very old school indeed. Chendol — not as good as the rest of the food. I would love to return again just to try the other homestyle food and the cakes! Maybe it is quite rare to find tasty traditional cakes(pound cake base) with none of the fancy frosting and ganache or cream, at least now I know I can get it here. The lemon and butter cakes are quite calling out to me, think they will go very well with a cup of English tea.

This shop is cute lah. With such a name, how to resist going in? Unless you had a terrible childhood, then you are excused and can run away screaming. This place’s popular with young people, go in instantly become part of the cool crowd. Once again, we were greeted by a huge blackboard that spanned the entire wall, but this is justifiable because it fits in with the restaurant theme. I was impressed with how complete and sincere the theme was done. Even ordering was fun — you could scribble your order on a piece of mini whiteboard. The staff must all be experts at deciphering handwriting now. The food was reasonable, lots of local favourites that all Singaporeans would recognise. There were also cakes, I particularly liked the sticky chewy chocolate cake for obvious reasons. The best part is that they do not add MSG or preservatives into any of their cooking. Now that’s a school that MOH would approve of.

Thompson Road is really popular for a wide selection of good eating spots for various cuisine and I heard about Old School Delights from a friend who stays in the area. I met Olivia who owns the place at one of my trips down. A very lovely lady who shared that most of the recipes are passed down from within the family, so you know you are in good hands here. The menu features popular local dishes like mee siam, laksa along with old school style of Western food, served with crinkle cut fries and closelaw. It is a charming place to eat especially for people who grew up in the 80s because we can connect with the memories of the huge blackboard sprawling across the restaurant, the whiteboard on which you write your orders on and the«toy shop». I’m happy to report that the dishes are rich in flavour and I especially liked the kueh pie tee which had a crispy shell and juicy radish filling topped with some good chilli padi. You will also definitely be attracted by the cakes lining the front counter and remember to get some to end off your meal. The sticky chocolate cake is a must for fans of the sweet treat.
