Hainanese curry rice was not part of my growing up food and so I have never had it until my 20s. And even then it was a sporadic affair, I could probably count on one hand how many times I tried Hainanese curry rice before I found out about this place. I was totally blown away with the curry rice at this stall. The crispy pork chop was to die for. I probably like it heaps as it was so crispy I could not taste any meat at all. Hah. The must have on my list — crispy pork chop — sunny side up egg(drizzled with dark soya sauce) — chap chye(braised cabbage) Extras: — meat patty(no porky smell/taste) — deep fried prawns — squid(some has egg or something in it) — long beans And if you love gravy on your rice, I would recommend not to order in dishes but have the dishes on your rice itself, plus the 3 gravies(curry, chap chye and lor) poured over the rice. Somehow when you have the dishes on separate plates, it just does not taste as good. Maybe because of the additional sauce? The rice portion is quite big for takeaway, so you could probably do 2 meals in it. And you could also do a fried rice with the leftovers. Delicious! This is one stall I will actually travel to just to satisfy my Hainanese curry rice craving. And I still do not really order curry rice anywhere else. NOTE: Try to be there before 1pm as not many items are available after that. It is closed on Wednesday. The queue is often snaking long, with 20 – 30 minutes wait.

This is my regular hainanese curry rice. I’ve brought my half Japanese friend. waitaminute I’ve brought 2 different half Japanese friends and they both loved it. One even wanted me to bring her mom next time and she loved it too even though we ate on a sweltering hot day. Now that I think about it, every friend that I’ve brought here has commented on how good it is. I’m always amused at how everyone knows it as the no name Hainanese rice. then to realise that it’s saved on Unilocal as this too haha! Regular dishes for me: 1) chap chye and extra chap chye 2) squid(always sad when it’s sold out) 3) pork chop(but of course). Be warned this is different from other places. It seems to be a savoury thin layer of crispiness without any meat but a lot of flavour and crunch. 4) battered prawn — always crispy and light batter 5) pork belly — this is the place that I’m least guilty about ordering pork belly if that is possible. It seems to be quite cia bah(lean meat). Nevertheless I always tell the uncle that I want the one with less fat and he never laughs at me but actually seems to try to select a suitable one 6) dark soya sauce egg If I’m here with mom, we order a piece of fish. If I’m doing a takeaway packet, it’s often extra chap chye, pork chop and an egg. It’s SO affordable here. And as popular as they are(which the queue shows), the uncle and auntie serving and the uncle collecting money are all super nice. Even though it’s self service, uncle who trays up the food and collects money always tells me to go sit and he will send to my table. Or maybe it’s because I always order too much to carry myself? I love the gravies here. I always get them to pour it on for me. It seems to be a mix of 7 types or so! You know how people talk about the 5th taste, umami. well these Hainanese have got the handle on it! It’s only open for early morning breakfast up till lunch.

There are many Hainanese curry rice shop in Singapore but my deepest love will always belong to this shop in Beo Crescent. This stall do not even have a shop name or sign board and it is so nondescript that they don’t even bother lighting up their dishes of food on display. But many people all around Singapore still know of it and they will spend an hour queuing up just to have it. I am a lucky girl. My grandmother, who used to stay in the HDB above the coffee shop know the owner of the Hainanese curry rice shop so she will always tell the owner to save a packet for me. But even now, when I have to queue for my own curry rice, I will willingly do so. The generous amount of sauce that is given is made up of a mixture of curry, lor and chap chye gravy and is poured onto plain rice. All the dishes are great and of must-try quality but if you have to choose, I will recommend getting the pork chop(which is fried until super crispy), curry chicken, and stewed cabbage.
