Mochi Sweets

Like the others who have reviewed — the fancy look of Mochi Sweets was what lured me into buying two mochi’s for my husband and I to share. If you don’t know what a mochi is, it’s a glutinous rice cake and, in this case, it’s wrapped around a small mound of ice cream. An adequate selection of different flavours in the front display that you can choose to try for about S$ 2.80 each. Not cheap, but reasonable for a store of this specialty.
We went with two singles to eat immediately — sakura and mango flavours. There are options to buy in different quantities — like half dozen/​full dozen boxes, and are delivered to you frozen. They must be frozen because, again, there is icecream inside. You just gotta leave them out for a little bit to thaw before you enjoy.
It was a little awkward to hold these while walking about Bugis and much tempting to take tiny bites out of it to see if they were ‘ready’. I like mochis and the skin/​ice cream combos were good. Not mind blowing or life changing though.

I was sold with the designer store front and the simple display. We tried the caramel macciato and the mango yogurt (the most popular). It was ok but we had to wait for over a hour to eat since it was frozen.

I want to try their peach cream flavour, but it’s always out of stock whenever I drop by. Sigh.
The staff said only the mango yoghurt flavour contains alcohol, so that’s the only one I couldn’t have. I’ve had their sakura, blueberry cream and Japanese purple potato. The sakura tasted like flour and the I found the Japanese purple potato flavour somewhat intense. Yuck. I didn’t like them. Prices are unjustifiable.
The blueberry cream was the best I had. Sweet, subtle and not too overwhelming.

I’ve got to stop stuffing myself with chewy bouncy things — mochi being one of them.
The décor of the shop was eye-​catching, many shoppers like us were intrigued by this shop that was selling only mochi. So naturally a small queue formed in front of the shop.
While waiting in line I studied the flavours available — all displayed nicely with cute cards behind the glass panel. A gift set of top 6 best selling flavours would cost you SGD14. The price then was each for $ 2.80 (not very cheap). Those flavours included mango yoghurt, blueberry cream, chestnut cream…
I bought the sakura. It came in a paper bag, with instructions telling us to let it defrost for 20 minutes before eating. We tried ignoring the instructions (because we had a movie to catch) but it was icy hard. So we waited. After the skin turned soft, the insides were still very icy, the mochi was too thick and heavy in my opinion.
