Cuisine from Central European countries such as Austria, Czech Republic and Hungary! Based on the recommendation of another online review, I decided to check out the place in the newly restored Capitol Building. The restaurant is inspired by the 16th century Habsburg Empire, which encompasses current day countries such as Austria, Bosnia, Czech Republic, Hungary, and Northern Italy. It wasn’t particularly easy to find as the restaurant is located on the 2nd and 3rd floors above the entrance to the theater. It took a while to figure out where the elevator/escalator to the 2nd floor was located. Upon entry, I observed the rather grand décor with plush seating and gold plated looking ornaments. I went for couple of Austrian options like Austria’s «national» dish, Wiener Schnitzel(the breaded veal version), the Kasekrainer(Austrian Pork Cheese Sausages) and Tafelspitzsulze Beef Aspic. The Wiener Schnitzel is one of the better ones that I’ve tried, rather crisp on the outside and moist on the inside, but one of the pieces was a tad bit drier than expected. The sausages were also pretty good, nicely grilled, but bordered on overly salty. The sauerkraut and potatoes were tasty and not sour, it pretty much beat any version served up by the other German and central European restaurants in Singapore. Executive Chef Hans Lüftenegger(formerly at Brotzeit) and Executive Pastry Chef Patrick helm the kitchen, and the quality of the food shows. The restaurant also serves a large selection of pastries displayed in a glass case, and«Zaunerstollen» from the Austrian patisserie Zauner(wafers coated in chocolate), and coffee from Julius Meinl. The chocolate cake was heavenly… The restaurant seemed to be moderately filled with customers, but I’m wondering if there’s mass appeal in serving Austrian/Hungarian food that the crowd may not be familiar with. Competition is tough in the restaurant scene here. I’m impressed that they stuck to the theme and this is a rare find for cuisine in Singapore. I had a good dinner and I hope to be back for a second visit to try the rest of the items on the menu.
