Ipoh Kia White Curry And Prawn Mee

A «Kia» that knows his flavors!
Tucked away at a little corner of Smith’s street food centre (or the Chinatown food centre as most of us may recognize it by) lies a little stall specializing in 2 main Ipoh dishes that many of us have not only come to know about but have learnt to love.
Unlike the other stalls around it, Ipoh Kia doesn’t have 5 – 10 variety of dishes to chose from. In fact, he only has 2 and these 2 are more than enough to keep you coming back for more.
We learnt of this place from a relative who discovered it by accident. She recommended it to the gf’s parents and they’ve been frequenting it whenever they need their prawn noodle or curry noodle fix.
With the gf’s dad being pretty fussy with his food, for him to go back twice only means that this little noodle shop has impressed him and we knew we had to give it a try.
Now, I’ll be honest. I haven’t had enough white curry noodle or Authentic Ipoh prawn noodles to try, so I won’t be able to make an accurate comparison on just how authentic his is. What I will do is judge it on what it is. A bowl of prawn noodle and a bowl of curry noodle.
Ipoh White Curry Noodle
Now THIS is a bowl of curry noodles! Unlike the Singapore version we see, which stock is normally chicken broth /​stock, the Ipoh white curry here clearly has the prawn broth mixed in.
This makes the curry extra fragrant with an added level of sweetness you will not normally find in other curries. The aroma is very pleasant while the curry, as tasty as it is, does not overpower the sweetness of the prawn.
The noodle was perfectly cooked and the vegetables were lightly blanched, ensuring that it’s still wonderfully green and crisp.
The curry noodle is served with a choice of Beehoon or yellow noodles (or both), 1 ½ medium prawns (which were extremely fresh) and Beancurd skin.
It was definitely a rich bowl of goodness!
Ipoh Prawn Noodle
Off the bat, we were extremely pleased when the bowl came. The soup was very fragrant, with the sweetness of the prawns screaming at you the minute it hits the table. The stock looked the perfect colour and it came with a good portion of Fried Onions and Lard, adding an additional layer and depth to the flavour.
The gf is one very picky prawn noodle eater, with so far, only the Penang prawn noodle truly impressing her… Until now.
One taste of the soup and I can see why.
Saying it was delightful is an understatement while calling this just a prawn noodle, doesn’t do it justice.
The stock was beautiful fragrant, making each slurp of soup an amazing an memorable one.
The fish cake in the noodles were soooooo soft and tender. Normally, all forms of fish cake tends to end up in my bowl but the gf loved it so much that all I got was one… ONE piece to try.
It was so good that the gf and I were fighting for the last spoonfuls (and the gf isn’t a soup fan either).
The prawns in both dishes were really fresh as well. Nothing turns me off a prawn noodle more than mushy prawns but these prawns were crunchy, crisp, easily falling off the shell… And sere so so so sweet.
Overall, this place has one of the best curry noodles I’ve ever had while the prawn noodle is up there with the best in Singapore and at $ 3.50 a bowl, it isn’t the most expensive around either.
Unfortunately, he is tucked into a very small corner and I worry that due to the lack of visibility, no one would ever know he’s there.
Hmmmm I can’t wait for my next fix of his White curry noodles… Mmmmm
