Time flies when you’re having fun eh? It’s my 200th review(!!!), and I thought I’d go back to one of my old favourites. This is the story of a hungry guy, and a peanut pancake. And how they found a blissful union. The girlfriend and I just started on a new clean-eating diet: minimally processed, nothing deep-fried, avoiding carbs and gluten as much as we can, that kind of thing. And it was going okay. We even got out of bed early to head to the wet market for a groceries run — we were that committed. Groceries in hand, we walked by the food centre on our way out, and suddenly we were conflicted. The aroma of nasi lemak wafted by, followed by a multitude of signs for prawn mee/char kway teow/bak chor mee, and then there were the uncles digging into their roti pratas… I looked at the girlfriend, and I couldn’t tell if she was similarly conflicted, so I soldiered on. Until I smelled the goodness of peanuts, and spied the oh-so-familiar golden-brown discs of crispy filled-with-goodness pancakes. It was the last straw, and it was as the Borg say; resistance, is indeed futile. As I fumbled for a semi-believable excuse for putting some pancake in my mouth, the girlfriend, in all her benevolence, looked the other way, and indulged me in this delicious treat. It may have also been because she’s as much of a fan of these as I am. I’m a lucky guy. So old school, so good. She had a red bean one, and I had a peanut-filled one, and it really hit the spot. Crisp on the outside, and warm and spongy on the inside, these where what I wish every peanut pancake would be like. And with a darling pair of old folks manning the stoves — they’re super smiley and cute, and I can’t help but want to buy ALL the pancakes!!! While your wallet may be like mine(unable to pay for all the pancakes), at least buy a couple, and smile to the uncle and auntie for me. And then eat all the pancakes.

Expect long lines on weekends when the neighborhood has people coming down for late breakfast/early lunch. They make their pancake only upon ordering and most people tend to buy a few pieces. So you may have to wait quite a while for yours. Eating fresh off the plate is the best. Warm and moist, and when it is that hot, the sugar in the filling melt a little and taste better. Most people ask for the sides so that they got more crispy bits. So the uncle usually can’t give you a whole box of only the edges of the pancake.
