I first tried En 10 years ago at their flagship restaurant at Mohammed Sultan and it was 5*s then. My first love was their beef carpaccio and unagi fried rice. Over the years and after continued depletion of quality in both food and service, this would probably be my last time there. The sashimi was still good and the 50% off during the 6−8pm happy hour is probably worth it though they did raise the selling price first before giving the 50%. At $ 15, the unagi fried rice had practically no unagi in it. The rice was not fragrant and almost soggy — very different from moist. The carpaccio was drowned in the sauce, masking the natural sweetness of the beef. The miso cod was overcooked and really a gross waste of good cod. We didn’t even want to stay for dessert.

We liked the En restaurant at Bukit Timah so we decided to try their sister restaurant when we saw their offer on Groupon. It turned out to be a big disappointment. For some unknown reason, the lady manager here tried to impose all kinds of restrictions which are not listed in the groupon. First we were told over the phone that it could not be used on eves of and on public holidays. We double-checked the fine print and it didn’t say anything about these two restrictions. When we got there, the guests using groupon were all seated outdoors. This wouldn’t have been so bad if there was no garbage bin and trolley for dirty dishes. We ordered sashimi caeser salad, beef and fried rice with seaweed. Food is okay but not as good as the one at Bukit Timah. When we ordered, we specially checked with the staff whether we could use two groups if we wanted to order more later. The answer was YES. In the middle of the meal, the lady manager came to scan our groupon. I found it a bit strange but didn’t ask. But when we wanted to add some dessert, we were told that we can no longer use another groupon, because she has already scanned. Well, I think if the management of the restaurant dislike the groupon users so much, they might as well stop their promotion right away. Anyway, after this instance the dislike is mutual and I will certainly not return to any of their restaurants at UE Square because they seem to share the same team.

There’s a half price sushi deal throughout the week which is very reasonable — the sushi itself is very good and the venue is high energy. The range of drinks, wines and saki is very expensive so be prepared if that’s what you’re in the mood for.

You may want to drop by for dinner before 8pm cuz that’s when the 50% discount applies to the sushi & etc. I have had my fair share of beef carpaccio, sashimi and not forgetting my favorite *Drum roll* Wafu Spaghetti!!! They also have 30% for their alcoholic drinks! & next door, EN dining bar has buffet for their japanese grilled dish like those @yakitori q which is worth going if you are having a celebration.

Well, I love supper and often in search of great late night eats. This is one of the places that dish out japanese eats to the late night. Well, we are talking about till 3 am. To sweeten the deal, hey have 50% for sushi and sashimi daily from 6 — 8 pm and late night supper deals too. The service tend to bit slow but the food is pretty good. They have a lot of light snacks to go with drinks too. It is a great place to chill with friends, grab some japanese sake or beer and light bites.

Where there are plenty of native Japanese guests, you know the food is authentic and good. That’s what I was told by a foodie friend of mine and En has plenty of that. And ever since my first introduction to it, I’ve been finding myself back there! While the décor isn’t really Japanese, the ambience is decidedly so, thanks to the boisterous chants of «Kampai» you’ll undoubtedly here being said from time to time. Service is fairly decent, though they have a tendency to send the mains before the starters, but that’s not really a problem I can’t live with. One of the reasons why I keep going back is for the quality of the food and the seasonal offerings that they’ll have almost every other week. Since my introduction, I’ve had the chance to try almost everything on the menu, and my perennial favourites are their sashimi, beef carpaccio, garlic fried rice and kawa ebi. You might want to give their sushi’s a miss seeing how much better the rest of the menu is.
