The mighty Cold Storage, a saviour for many a local and many more expats. A good selection of global foods, fresh fruit, veg and fish. There is a wine selection to complete your dinner pairing so that every night at home can be a true culinary event. And all thanks to Cold Storage.

Very long lines on Sunday afternoon I had to wait almost 30 minutes to get through with a basket full of stuff only. They only have a few lanes open. These guys charge so much but do not adequately staff the check out lines. Despicable!

Before and after the renovation, this branch of Cold Storage was, is, and probably always will be my favourite branch. There’s a spectacular cheese selection, decent deli choices, plenty of vegetables and fresh herbs, including a organic veggies section, and many many many frozen foods. There’s just a good solid range of pantry filling foods to be found here, and it’s my go-to place for aimless grocery shopping. I always find something. To be fair, Fairprice IS cheaper, especially for vegetables, so if you have a quick need, that’s usually cheaper, but for good looking veggies, harder to find stuff like different kinds of crème(double, thickened, whipping, fraiche, clotted), buttermilk, rice milk, hazelnut milk, you’ll find all of that here. Maybe it isn’t such a great place if you’re lactose intolerant, now that I reread what I’ve wrote, but still. I love this branch deeply. If only they were 24h!

If you’re from the US, expect Wholes Foods receipt when you leave. You’ll be like«D$#@, I spent $ 300 on this?» Yes, you did. Expensive overall because many things are imported. It’s clean but it’s Singapore! We stayed at the Great World Serviced Apartments(connected to this mall) and we certainly paid for convenience. Expect to pay over $ 10 for a few liters of water.

It has been a long while since I last visited the Cold Storage at Great World City so I was pretty excited when I popped over last Saturday and discovered it has been renovated and is much bigger and with more items than before. The only drawback is the stretch of stalls selling snacks has disappeared! No more tubs of ice cream from Island Creamery now. The aisles are wider, sections are more spaced out. Fresh fruits are right at the front of the store, enticing shoppers with their pretty, blemish free appearance. The deli has a good range, but it is missing the wider selection of sausages which you could buy singly like in Jasons(ok, maybe I should not compare since this is Cold Storage and is not Jasons or Market Place even though they are under Dairy Farm group). There is a section selling fresh pizza which you can buy either by the slice(huge!) or the entire pie. The sushi/sashimi selection is pretty good. It certainly stocks more stuff from other countries making it quite a joy to shop. Parking is easy, and getting a taxi is pretty ok if you leave early i.e. before 8+pm.

This supermarket chain has a number of stores island-wide but this has got to be one of the best in terms of the range of food stuff and the number of brands available. I have to say that this particular outlet has one of the best Delicatessen sections one could ask for, a wide range of cheeses, cold cuts, meats, etc. They even have a good selection of seafood too, one of the few places I can find live lobsters on sale as well. The fruits and vegetable section in front offers a mix of local produce, Japanese imports, organic produce and much. Shopping here is always a joy, and if you need to check out quick with a few items, you can self-serve in the kiosks available. Staff is on-hand to help you out if you should encounter a problem.
