The cakes here might not be cheap but they are worth every cent and every calorie. I would rather eat less cakes and pay more for good ones. No point consuming calories of lousy cakes or any lousy food. My favourites are the kueh salat, carrot cake and hazelnut cake although I like all their cakes. Been buying these cakes for a long time and buy to give them away too. So far, I haven’t heard any complaints from those I had gifted with Chalk Farm’s cakes and I hear compliments all the time.

Beautiful display made this nice nook look so promising. Sadly let down by overpriced, average cakes and curt staff whose backs are always to the customers. Coffee was very weak. Two stars are for the presentation, not taste.

I must confess– I came here after reading Natalie H’s review(because I know her well enough to trust her taste). And when I saw that Carolyn L and Nik T had also posted stellar reviews, that sealed the deal! I had to try their cakes! The kueh salat was indeed very good, and in high demand– the first time I walked past, there were 2 slices left, and I decided to grab dinner before buying it. Less than an hour later, it was GONE. Sian. The second time I was here on a weekday evening and there. Was. No. Kueh. Third time lucky and I managed to get a taste of it(in fact they had just brought out a whole new cake and I technically could have had the whole cake to myself hehehehehehehe). The custard later was smooth and not too sweet or cloying. I loved that the pandan did not taste artificial. The glutinous rice, colored qith butterfly pea, was firm and smooth– did not taste dry or overcooked. It was a fine contrast to the softness of the custard. At $ 5, I thought that this was quite worth it! The piece was reasonably filling and became my dinner for that day.

This is a great over-priced cake store with only two seats; so grab-and-go it is. I haven’t tried anything apart from the Kueh Salat here. IFYOULIKEKUEHSALAT, BUYTHIS! Calming down, my ardor for this humble kueh is unparalleled. If you have an angry girlfriend, perhaps this will make her much more pliable. The custard is soft, perfectly done, not overly sweet, fragrantly pandan, and the rice is slightly salty to balance and contrast the custard. Authentically tinged blue with pea flowers, oh man. This will be my birthday cake this year — PATRICIA C are you reading this? I would like to thank Nik T, and Carolyn L, for telling me about this place. And also my parents for raising me, so I am healthy and able, to walk to the basement of Paragon to sample this ridiculously good kueh.

I have since tried many other cakes(loaf cakes, cupcakes, bundt cake, sponge cake etc) and they are all good. I am not so enamored about the lavender bits on the cake but that is just me. One thing I have realized about baked goods are it is always best to have them on the same day, or if you are going to have it the next day, then do not refrigerate it. Somehow the cold will render the cakes drier and harder. I just have to mention the local kueh(cake), specifically the kueh salat. It is the best version I have tasted so far. Maybe it is because I have it on the day itself and never keep it in the fridge. The version here with the sticky rice base streaked with blue(apparently it is butterfly pea extract) and topped with a fragrant pandan coconut custard is very soft. It is unlike other places where their kueh salat(the rice) is usually very hard and a bit dry. It is pretty popular and is usually sold out by the end of the day.

because… hsueh said so! and carolyn reinforced it as such! well, i’ve not gone very far wrong, when i followed either, when it comes to dessert. thanks, ladies! no, there’s no chalk in chalk farm. it’s just a randomly selected name, apparently a stop on london’s tube. and aptly so, as you should make a stop here, preferably before and/or after virgin active!;) else, leave your weighing scales at home or don’t go home for a week after you indulge in their treats. i always put on about 2kgs after! ok, i do exaggerate… but i’m not exaggerating when i say they are good, sinfully good. it’s not easy to achieve a delicate sinful balance. a rich dense quality that isn’t cloyingly heavy nor sugary. i also like how they make interesting flavours, chocolate guinness cake, strawberry lavender cheesecake, banana muscovado loaf with peanut butter cream, kueh salaat and now kueh lapis! the last two local nonya renditions are a hit, especially their kueh salaat. yes, at $ 5 a slice, most bibik will roll their eyes and baulk at the idea of coughing up so much for something they can make with their eyes closed. but for us plebians, devoid of such skills, we are held ransom but i must say i’ll still gladly pay. as for the newly minted kueh lapis, nine layer cake, i actually prefer more colours! but it is always a pleasure to peel off layer by layer, playfully so, as mr. grey would? this is a to go place. but to go or not to go, that is the calorific question!

Simply fantastic cakes, some of the best I’ve had anywhere. As an avid baker, I am very picky about baked goods — if a cake is made with inferior ingredients or just not delicious, what is the point in wasting sugary, fattening calories? Chalk Farm’s cakes are some of the few that are well worth the indulgence. My favourite of the bunch is the hazelnut cake — a butter cake made with hazelnut flour topped with chocolate ganache and toasted caramelized hazelnuts. Other cakes are equally delicious — moist chocolate olive oil, tangy lemon yogurt pound cake, boozy carrot whiskey sultana. The flavours are interesting and a cut above what most would bake at home without being over the top and — importantly– not too sweet. I

Bought a take away slice cake since the dine in spot was too small. for a $ 4.90 came it came in a very small cutting. trued the caramel cake and 24k brownies. probably only 2 cm wide for the caramel cake. Anyway the cake taste good, a little bit too sweet for the brownies. Don’t think will be back, i think canele got a better offer in value.
