Some friends and I were there recently for a mid-afternoon respite. All I will say is the chocolate-banana cake is the bomb. An unassuming slice it may be, but packed so full of chocolaty flavour you cannot believe. Black is very popular with the office crowd, so it was full at 4pm on a Friday. I don’t know if they were understaffed or just disorganized, but it was certainly unpleasant that there was an uncleared table(that because dirty-dishes central from other tables) in the middle of the café. Surely it doesn’t take so long to clean that up and free up more space for more customers?

Another great café in Raffles Place that serves excellent coffees and desserts. Irregardless of the time of day, this place feels chilled and relaxed. They do breakfast specials of coffee + scones /muffins, and also lunch specials of a coffee and salad /sandwiches. The breakfast is great — their muffins and scones are sinfully buttery but oh so tasty! A real treat in the morning — prepared and served by their cheery staff. The lunch isn’t so fantastic, very mediocre sandwiches that aren’t warmed up enough even when you ask for it to be toasted, and due to the small kitchen, we waited close to half an hour for the sandwiches to be served. If you’re in a rush, Black probably isn’t the place to go for lunch, but no complaints otherwise — still one of my favourite cafes to visit around this area.
