Beyond Beer

Whenever the need arises, I can simply use the Passage that links my street to Weidenalle and dive straight into Beyond Beer.
It’s a bottle shop with, shall we say a tasting area attached. The concept works well. The crew all speak English and are enthusiastic and knowledgeable.
So far, I’ve investigated some of the more esoteric of German Craft Beers and the journey has been rewarding.
I’d like to see BB extend their opening hours, I often arrive after 2000 to find them closed. I believe that there are plans to do so.
Beyond Beer faces a big challenge, they have a very successful, first to market, competitor down the road, and that competitor has the advantage of a huge on-​site brew pub and restaurant operation that brings massive footfall.
If Beyond Beer hope to survive they have to find a way of getting people through the door. I hope that they succeed!

Before the bottom drops out of the craft beer market no self-​respecting fan of the stuff should miss this store if they’re in Hamburg.
The range is extensive & no doubt as its fame grows more brewers will be looking to have their products stocked (space could well become an issue then). The one thing that could be tightened up on is labelling of UK & Irish brands as Brew Dog and at least one other were shown as ENG when they should have been SCO & IRL.

I feel quite lucky that Beyond Beer opened up just around the corner from our apartment.
First, the store is incredibly well merchandised. Just walking around and looking at the way the beers are displayed is a nice experience. The employees (I presume owners) are super kind and incredibly knowledgable about craft beer. They’ve helped us find a bunch of beers to fit our meal or plans for the day.
The selection is really impressive, with some of the U.S.’ And UK’s best but mainly a diverse selection of Europe’s best micro brews. I actually find the selection (and knowledge /​advice) to be much better than the larger Craft Beer Store (Ratsherrn) down the street.

Ganz frisch eröffnet, macht ich mich gleich auf den Weg, um mir das Ganze mal aus der Nähe anzusehen.
Der Store ist optisch sehr nett aufgemacht und besticht durch seine klaren Linien und der reduzierten Deko. Das Bier steht hier eindeutig im Vordergrund und davon gibt es einiges.
Nach Regionen bzw. Länger sortiert, stehen die hohen Regale zu beiden Seiten des Geschäfts.
Hier begegnet einem Bekanntes und weniger Bekanntes.
Preislich schwankt das Ganze natürlich nach Exklusivität, muss sich aber im Vergleich mit einem gut sortierten Supermarkt, die ebenfalls ein paar Craft Beer Marken im Sortiment haben, nicht scheuen.
Im hinterem Teil von Beyond Beer befindet sich der Taproom.
Hier werden im wöchentlichen Wechsel immer drei verschiedene Bier vom Fass angeboten. So könnte man jede Woche drei neue Biere testen, oder einfach einen kleinen Zwischenstopp auf ein kühles Blondes oder kräftiges Dunkel einlegen. Ein paar Tische und einige Barstühle laden zum Verweilen ein.
Steht einem der Sinn nicht nach einem frisch Gezapften, erwarten einen ebenfalls eine große Auswahl an gekühlte Bieren in Flaschen. Auswahl ist also genug da.
Ich probierte das Go-​To IPA von Stone Brewing aus den USA. Leicht und frisch und mit lockeren 4,5%.
Der Service vor und hinter dem Tresen ist super freundlich und berät bei Bedarf gerne. Das ist wirklich super, da die ein oder andere Biersorte sicherlich etwas Erklärungsbedarf benötigt, damit man auch sieht, ob sie zum eigenen Geschmack passt.
Aufgrund der Neueröffnung gab es auch ein sehr leckeres Biereis mit Rodenbach Grand Cru und einem lieblichen Schwarzbier-​Topping. Dies wurde von den Eisprinzessinnen produziert und war super erfrischend.
Wer also ausgefallenes Craft Beer sucht und gerne auch etwas Beratung wünscht, ist bei Beyond Beer genau richtig!
Super ist auch die Idee, frisch gezapftes Bier in einer 2 Liter Flasche mit nach Hause zu nehmen. So kann man ganz nach Lust und Laune seinen Favoriten aus dem Taproom abholen und mitnehmen!
