MAXIM – Bar à vins

Despite its grand name, this is a lovely low-​key and unassuming spot with an excellent range of «natural» wines. We popped in after dinner for a couple of glasses and on asking about their selection were offered a couple that were not on the menu, which we were served first as micro-​tastes before deciding. We also succumbed to a cheeseboard, which was a delicious, if quite small, selection of 6 cheeses. Service was very friendly and accommodating.

The wine is good, but the food is on the pricey side. We had the cold roastbeed and it was pretty stingy on the plate. Only one dessert, and that was a fruit salad. Located on a really quiet street just off Rosenthaler. Pretty quiet on a Friday night, I’d say it would be more for a romantic night.

This review is only for the wine and overall experience. I went to Maxim the other night with friends for after work drinks and had a wonderful time. The interior is well-​decorated and intimate with low lightening.
The wine list is written on a wall but when we asked the server for recommendations based on our individual preferences he kindly chose a few for us to sample. The server seemed very knowledgable about the wines and definitely picked out perfect ones for me to try — they were all delicious! I ended up going with a very interesting and floral white that I really enjoyed.
The prices seemed good to me. I don’t often drink wine but I usually expect to pay € 6+ for a glass of something nice, however they did have wines for as low as € 3,50.
I had a really lovely time at Maxim and would happily go back!

Einen leider nicht wirklich zufriedenstellenden Abend verbrachten wir im Maxim. Das fängt schon beim Licht an, die grossen neon-​bleuchteten Kästen an der Wand verbreiten ein bisschen OP-​Atmo. Die Weinkarte ist XXL, doch schon vom ersten Wein war nur noch eine ¾ gefüllte Flasche vorhanden. Auch vom zweiten Wein nur noch eine Flasche auf Lager. Das nervt, zumal man vom Wein-​Durcheinander-​Trinken ja auch schnell mal Kopfschmerzen bekommt. Also: lieber eine kleine, feine Weinkarte, dafür dann aber pro Flasche auch mehr als eine Bouteille vorhalten. Die Speisen konnten auch nicht recht überzeugen. Das Fisch-​Carpaccio war nicht so richtig frisch. Das Lamm war spitze, aber eine zu kleine Portion. Der Käseteller war ebenfalls recht «aufgeräumt» von der Portion her — Brot wurde erst auf Nachfrage gereicht. Das Maxim — aus unserer Sicht mit deutlich Luft nach oben!

Great wine bar with good, mainly French wine selection. DJ turned sommelier advises on wine food pairings. It’s a fun little bar with a simple good food menu. Foie gras had a big fat layer but taste was excellent, the grilled pulpo was al dente and fresh and the lamb was just perfectly cooked. The beef tartare is served with raw egg and cognac — so good. Service is not super attentive but very good for Berlin standards. Interesting wines to go with entrees, some I would have never picked. Enjoyed the evening a great deal.

Vorsicht beim Betreten des Lokals! Immer wieder gibt es Gäste, die regelrecht hinein stolpern und sich erst mal der Länge nach auf die Nase legen. Grund dafür ist eine Schwelle inmitten des Gastraums, die nicht jeder gleich wahrnimmt und die schon so manchen Gast von den Füßen gehauen hat.
Hat man Platz genommen, überzeugt ein freundlicher und zugleich kundiger Service. Manchmal gerät der aber etwas ins stocken und Wasserflaschen und Weine kommen nicht wie bestellt.
Das Essen wird optisch äußerst anspruchsvoll präsentiert. Trotz qualitativ hochwertiger Zutaten überzeugt es geschmacklich aber nicht immer. Hier wäre neben der Optik etwas mehr kulinarische Finesse wünschenswert, die dann auch die vergleichsweise hohen Preise rechtfertigen würde. Nach zwei Monaten Betriebszeit sucht das Maxim noch seinen eigenen Stil. Es ist ihm zu wünschen, dass es ihn findet.

Schade, dass das Maxim noch keine Bewertung hat.
Für mich hat es 5 Sterne verdient.
Endlich mal wieder ein Lokal, das nicht zu überdesignet ist. Jeder Wein den ich bisher dort getrunken habe war toll. Essen auch super und die Käseauswahl groß! Alles richtig gemacht, Note 1.
