Konnopke’s Imbiss

This is a must see and have cult status. It is almost impossible not to experience a line or que when getting your «Wurst» from here. They are extremely efficient, since they have been doing this for decades, but they still attract a massive crowd. It is simply probably the best curry in town.

In Berlin I discovered I really just don’t like Currywurst. It’s basically a hotdog chopped up and covered in ketchup and a little curry powder. Gross. Of the two stands I got, this was significantly worse. The meat tasted cheap and flavorless. That’s all you really need to know. Don’t come here just because it’s iconic. There are better currywurst joints around town.

I was hoping to find the best currywurst I could get in Berlin. Unfortunately, the sausage here tasted like a hot dog with too much ketchup. No curry flavor and no crisp to the skin at all.

Imagine this — you love food; you’re in the wurst capital of the world, surrounded by currywurst, bratwurst, bockwurst; and… you can’t eat any of it because you’re not a carnivore. It’s the WORST (the wurst?!?). Thank goodness I don’t have a gluten allergy on top of my commitment to avoid meat; I would have starved in Germany.
Anyway, for the vegetarian damsel in distress, it’s Konnopke’s to the rescue! As with so many wurst stands, this little gem is located within a stone’s throw of a U-​Bahn station, which makes your currywurst a convenient post– or pre-​commute snack. The best thing (for me) is that in addition to regular currywurst, they offer vegan currywurst! You pay a slight premium for it, but since vegan wurst is not often ordered, they don’t grill them in bulk, which means that if you DO order a vegan wurst, you get it freshly grilled and sliced up! There are 2 wursts per order, and you better bet you want fries, mayo, AND ketchup with that. The pommes are crispy and — I never thought I would say this — the mayo is surprisingly delicious.
Most folks eat their wursts standing at high tables, but Konnopke’s also has a sheltered patio area for those who wish to enjoy their wursts sitting down. There are communal tables with cushions. Also available at Konnopke’s — radler, pilsners, and kinder-​friendly beverages (ie juices & sodas).

I do think that this is the best Currywurst in Berlin… the skin was crispy and the sausage was yummy and crunchy.
they also have a very nice seating area and it has been serving yummy currywurst for ages! I am a fan :)

we went to try the Berlin originated dish, currywurst, on our first night in Berlin. This establishment, recommended by Anthony Bourdain, the host of no reservations, was my group’s first choice.
The establishment sort of looks like Harry’s pie on wheels where you order at the counter, get food served on paper plates with plastic cutlery and grab a stool at one of the three long tables. For € 3.80, you get a wurst with curry powder on top and some sauce that tastes like ketchup. I got mine at a level 4 (spicy levels are rated from 1 – 5, where levels 1 – 3 is like Tabasco and 4 is 8000x Spicier than 3 apparently) spicy and it tasted like ketchup with a slight kick to it.
The sausage sauce combo came with a potato salad that just tasted like a standard potato salad with mayo.
The sausage itself was average. I liked it but don’t need to have it again anytime too soon.
I had a curry wurst in Vienna, and that was just a sausage with mustard and curry powder in a hot dog bun. This had more flavour due yo the ketchup like sauce but nothing special.

Very good Currywurst and fries. I always get mine «rot/​weiß», which means with the usual curry ketchup plus some mayo for the fries. There’s no inside seating, just a couple of tables outside.

We had no idea this is a famous spot, but it appeared to be! Great place for a beer and wurst if you might walk by!

The best we had during our visit to Berlin. The Wurst was amazing, the crispy casing really set it apart. The frites were also fantastic. Staff was friendly enough with us English speakers.

Ich war bisher 3 mal in Berlin, das letzte mal 2015 und dann 2010. Ich finde aber, dass die Wurst irgendwie nicht mehr so toll wie 2010 ist. Preis-​Leistung finde ich als Rheinländer hier immer noch gut. Ob ich das nächste mal Extra hierwegen komme, weiß ich noch nicht. Wahrscheinlich werde ich mal Curry 36 testen, da ich nicht so begeistert wie 2010 war.

Es gibt ja in Berlin ein paar Läden, die zu Recht gehyped werden. Dieser gehört meiner Meinung nach nicht dazu. Die Currywurst mit Pommes, die ich hier gegessen habe, war in Ordnung, mehr aber auch nicht.
Die Location direkt unter der U2 hat schon was, der Service war typisch für Berlin kurz angebunden und beim Preis zahlt man eben für die Marke mit.

I hate to leave a negative review but usually Unilocal doesn’t lead me wrong. They definitely led us astray this time. My friends and I all got the currywurst cause we figured that was the special. To be honest, there wasn’t that much special to it. The fries were decent which earns it the two stars cause the sausage wasn’t cuttin it. Kinda random you have to pay extra for any ketchup or mayo. The Sonoran dogs I’ve had in Tucson, AZ have been better. But maybe that’s because everything with bacon tastes better.
But who knows, there’s a crowd there so different strokes for different folks.

Ja eine Institution kann man das nennen! Schon immer von gleichbleibender Qualität ist der Konnopke Imbiss was leckeres für Zwischendurch. Das Brötchen dazu ist immer frisch, wenn man keine Fritten will. Die Currywurst vom Fleisch einfach lecker, Soße einfach aber gut! Der Preis ist ebenfalls der Hit. Ich würd sagen die beste CW in Berlin!

Die Currywurst schmeckt gut, bietet aber kein besonderes Geschmackserlebnis. Die Soße ist nicht so pappsüß wie bei manchen Imbissbuden, was mir als einziges im Gedächtnis geblieben ist. Ansonsten handelt es sich hierbei um eine Massenabfertigung: Man stellt sich an, gibt Bestellung auf, bezahlt, bekommt direkt sein Essen, darf auf der Bierbankgarnitur Platz nehmen und sich das Essen schnell reinschaufeln. Das Gefühl, was bleibt ist: Ja, ich habe grad was gegessen, aber war nichts Besonderes. Aufgrund der nicht vorhandenen Atmosphäre, vergesse ich auch gleich wieder den Weg hierhin.

Freundlicher schneller Service lecker und schöné Sitzmöbeln. Sollte man auf jedenfall mal probieren!

Schon meine Mutter war vor über 30 Jahren Gast bei Konopke und ich setze diese Tradition gerne fort.
Es handelt sich nicht um die beste Wurst der Stadt und auch die Preise haben in den letzten Jahren leider angezogen und doch besucht man diese Institution immer wieder gerne. Die Berliner Schnauze gibt es bei jeder Bestellung umsonst dazu!

Die Wurst ist ok, aber die Sosse viel zu süß. Geschmacklich nichts besonderes.

This place was awesome. This is a classic food stall that has been around a long time. The currywurst is insanely good. Loved it and for the price how can you argue. I cant find anything close to this in the states. Ive ordered it many times from many different places and nothing comes close to this. This is a must try if you are in Berlin.

Seit Jahren war ich das erste Mal in Berlin und wollte unbedingt mal eine Currywurst ohne Darm probieren. Irgendwas muss ja an dieser Wurst sein, dass sich gestritten wird, welche zu erst erfunden wurde.
Zum Glück hatte ich am Vortag schon eine CW am Vorabend gegessen. Andersfall wäre ich noch enttäuschter gewesen.
Als ich bei Konnopke’s ankam, war ich erst mal positiv über die Optik der Frittenbude überrascht. Sie kommt nostalgisch daher und drum herum ist alles sauber. Selbst die Tische werden regelmäßig abgeräumt und gewischt. Die Schlange war nicht existent und so konnte ich schnell etwas zu essen bestellen. «Einmal Currywurst ohne Darm mit Pommes und Mayo». Ich hatte noch nicht mal ausgesprochen, da wurde die Bestellung schon weiter gegeben, abkassiert (plus Bier unter 6 €!) und serviert. Ab hier geht es bergab.
An der Kasse hatte ich noch gefragt, ob es eine Wurst ohne Darm ist. (Wir erinnern uns, deswegen bin ich gekommen!) Diese Frage wurde bejaht. Gefragt hatte ich, da die Bratwurst anders als die am Vorabend aussah wie eine gewöhnliche Wurst im Darm. Als ich die Wurst näher betrachtete viel mir auf, dass am Wurstende Einschnitte eines Darms waren. Ich kann zwar nicht Bestimmtheit sagen, dass das keine Ohne-​Darm-​Wurst ist. Aber ich bin mir da relativ sicher. Zu mal die Wurst nach dem «Frittieren» eine Haut hatte. Aber! ich lasse mich gerne eines besseren belehren.
Davon ausgesehen, fand ich die Wurst langweilig. Genauso die Sauce. Pommes waren nicht krass und ebenfalls langweilig. Die Mayo war Standard. Preisleistung ist dennoch in Ordnung. Zusammen mit meinem Bier habe ich unter 6 € bezahlt. Wer also auf die schnelle CW+Pommes will, kann hier schon hingehen.

Konnopke’s — Currwurst seit 1930. Empfangen wurde man als wenn die Leute da schon seit 1930 arbeiten und das ohne Pause. Also dieser Snack wurde mir so unmotiviert und lustlos serviert wie selten ein Mahl zuvor. Bei mir gehört das alles zu einem guten Imbiss-​/​Restauranterlebnis dazu. Service war wie gesagt nicht wirklich zufriedenstellend. Die Location ist eigentlich ganz cool weil rund herum viel los ist und man super Leute beobachten kann während man es sich schmecken lässt. Man sollte nur auf die Tauben achten, dass die einem keinen Schiß — ähhh — STRICH durch die Rechnung machen. Zur Wurst selbst muss ich sagen, dass es eine völlig solide Currywurst gibt mit durchschnittlicher Soße. Nichts besonderes aber wenn das schon so lange gut geht, warum auch etwas ändern?!
Kann man mal mitnehmen, muss man aber auch nicht. :) Die Chilikrakauer hat mich auch nicht vom Hocker gehauen.

Naja… Ist eben eine Ost-​Berliner Institution.
Die Stimmung vor’m Stand unter den U-​Bahn-​Gleisen ist im Sommer auch einen Besuch wert.
Wenn man allerdings in die Diskussion um die beste Currywurst Berlins einsteigt, hat Konnopke’s meines Erachtens keine Chance mehr. Es gibt einfach dermaßen viele Currywürste, die besser schmecken (mein Favorit nach wie vor: Eckert’s an der Wilmersdorfer). Die Sauce schmeckt eher unterdurchschnittlich nach 08/​15-​Ketchup, die Wurst selbst schmeckt auch billig und ist nicht gerade raffiniert gewürzt.
In Prenzlauer Berg habe ich noch keine Currywurst gefunden, die mit den Westberlinern mithalten kann, aber ich lasse mich gerne eines besseren belehren ;-)

Konnopke´s Imbiss unter dem Viadukt der S-​Bahn in der Schönhauser Str., OT Prenzlauer Berg, ist das Ost-​Berliner Gegenstück von Curry 36.
Unglaublich gehyped, jeder muss hier mal gewesen sein und so war ich auch mal da (wenn auch nur aus Zufall beim Umsteigen entdeckt)
Die gelbe Bude unter der Hochbahn fällt ja schon mal da durch auf, dass hier (wie eben bei Curry 36) eine ewig lange Kundenschlange vor dem Ausgabeschalter auf seine Wurst wartet. Aber weil ich schon mal da war, habe ich mich in die Wartegemeinschaft eingereiht.
Es ging erstaunlich schnell, bis ich meine Bestellung aufgeben konnte und kurz darauf habe ich nach einem kurzen Wortwechsel meine Currywurst (heute mal mit «bisschen scharf») auf dem Pappteller.
Kurz umgeschaut, wo möchte ich meine Wurst essen? Es gibt einige Stehtische im Freien, aber auch einen kleinen Container nebendran, in dem man sein Essen verzehren kann.
Also stell ich mich an einen Tisch und lasse mir umtost von Verkehr meine Wurst schmecken — wobei schmecken ist übertrieben. Gut, die Wurst ist gut gebraten, aber nicht besonders gschmackig und die Soße/​der Ketchup war trotz der bestellten zusätzlichen Schärfe eher fad. Also für mich war es kein besonderer Gaumenschmaus. Und dafür dann auch noch 1,90 € ausgeben? Für Berliner Verhältnisse schon ein sehr ambitionierter Preis.
So kann ich also Konnopke nur 3 Sterne geben — und die sind eigentlich nur dafür, dass es ein Traditionsort und ein Touristenmagnet ist.

Ich verstehe zwar, dass es schnell gehen muss, aber Höflichkeit dem Kunden gegenüber sollte man doch haben. Tja ein vor zehn Jahren guter Ruf schützt nicht, wenn man sich auf seinen Lorbeeren ausruht.
Meiner Meinung nach ein Laden, wo viele nurnoch aus Gewohnheit hingehen.

One of the classic currywurst places in Berlin. Worth a visit not just because it’s under a highway, but because it’s an institution. It’s not the spiciest or most flavorful but you will remember this one.

waren gestern mal wieder in Berlin und wenn man schon in der Nähe von Konnopke ist… dann gönnt man sich auch né Currywurst!
Aber leider musste ich feststellen, Das die Currysoße nicht mehr soooo schmeckt wie in meinen Kindertagen !!! Schade… ansonsten passt das Ambiente und die gute und immer freundliche Bedienung !!!

Currywurst ist wie alles eben einfach nur Geschmacksache, ob mit oder ohne Darm, scharf oder eher süßlicher Ketchup.
Aber !: Die UrCurry in Berlin war ohne Darm, gespießt und mit sehr gut gewürztem mittelscharfem Ketchup. Was wir hier verkostet haben war doch eher lappig vom Fleisch her und sehr mäßig gewürzt.

Unlike some of the other Currywurst places I visited in Berlin, I had to make a farther, specific trip out to this one. Other than it being a couple train rides away from where I was staying, the location relative to the train station is convenient. You do have to take a couple of crosswalks just to make it to the stand, which sits directly under the elevated tracks. In this dark area, Konnopke’s is the shining light.
Also of convenience to you are English menus posted around the tables so you won’t have to struggle so much when deciding what to get. I ordered what I’ve gotten everywhere else: Currywurst & Pommes (fries) and added a local Pils to drink. The gentleman taking my order was nice and was the one who came out to bus the tables and check on guests in the tent. The tent seating is a nice shelter from the rain/​wind with better lighting than outside.
The food didn’t let me down, and the prices were reasonable. Worth the extra trip!

Currywurst is tradition. Invented 1949 in Berlin by Herta Heuwer, this sausage topped with a curry sauce made its way around the world. Good job, Herta.
When Berlin got parted in 1961, both East and West had their own favorite Currywurst stand. West-​Berlin had its Curry 36 in Kreuzberg. For the East, Konnopke’s was the Currywurst to-​go place.
Most of its rustic charm is still alive. Located under the elevated subway tracks in the middle of Schönhauser Allee it can be windy and grim. The stand with its yellow-​ish metal panel looks outdated. And the ladies working there rarely speak English.
But just order «eine currywurst mit brot», pay 2.20 Euro, and enjoy. You’ll also experience a piece of Berlin history.

Wow, wir waren echt beeindruckt von dieser Berliner Currywurstbude.
Die Leute standen in einer meterlangen Schlange an, trotzdem kamen wir relativ schnell dran. Das Personal ist extrem routiniert, es wird in einer extremen Geschwindigkeit «am Fließband» gearbeitet.
Wir hatten eine ganz normale Currywurst mit Pommes, die uns wirklich sehr sehr gut geschmeckt hat. Die Wurst war lecker, die Soße war gut und hat den Geschmack der Wurst nicht überdeckt. Auch die Pommes waren sehr gut.
Man findet trotz sehr langer Schlange problemlos einen Steh– oder Sitzplatz, wo man seine Wurst relativ bequem verspeisen kann.
Konnopke ist in Berlin (und darüber hinaus) so bekannt, dass es sogar einen kleinen Merchandiseartikelkatalog gibt :) Trotzdem ist die Bude empfehlenswert, weil die Wurst einfach lecker schmeckt!

They say this is one of the two good places to have a curry wurst in berlin, i.e. an institution. Sadly, I didn’t think it holds a candle to curry 36 in kreuzberg. It could have been the moment and hunger level but i wasn’t impressed with the specialty. I thought The fries were good, though. May try again since it’s not a big loss, but I’d go back to curry 36 any day.

Das ist die Berliner Currywurst ohne Darm.
Kultur und einfach gut. Kann man jedem empfehlen. Man kann sich auch bei der 36 anstellen und sich da enttäuschen lassen

Haben die Curry Bude über die App entdeckt und hatte für uns eine perfekte Lage zum Stadion. Die Schlange war zwar lang, aber trotzdem hatte man nach 5−10min seine Currywurst mit Pommer.
Die Wurst an sich ist super lecker. Meiner Meinung war die Soße ein bisschen langweilig, aber sonst wirklich sehr gut.

Früher bin ich nur zu Konnopke’s. Die letzten drei besuche waren sehr enttäuschend.
Öffnungszeiten sind auch nicht die besten und die Preise sind einfach nicht mehr angemessen.
In Zukunft kein Konnopke’s mehr.

Este imbiss es uno de los clásicos de Berlín. Situado debajo de la estación de Eberswalder Strasse en pleno corazón de Prenzlauer Berg lleva abierto desde 1930 y tiene fama de ser uno de los que mejores currywurst de la ciudad sirven.
Yo, amante del curry y conocedora de la fama del local, no podía dejar pasar la oportunidad de visitar este sitio en mi última visita a Berlín.
Al ser un negocio de comida para llevar o consumir en la calle, sus instalaciones son muy sencillas aunque se agradece la zona de mesas y bancos cubiertos que han instalado junto al quiosco de comida. El puesto siempre suele tener cola pero avanza bastante rápido ya que en una zona se compran las bebidas y a continuación, en otra zona distinta, se compra la comida.
Respecto a la comida, yo me decanté, como no podía ser de otra forma, por un «Large Currywurst Menu» que contenía dos salchichas cortadas en rodajas acompañadas de la famosa salsa de kétchup con curry y patatas fritas. El plato me encantó y una vez que lo he probado, puedo afirmar que es de los mejores que he probado hasta el momento. Mis acompañantes, no muy amantes del currywurst, se decantaron por otras salchichas (Wiener y Bockwurst) acompañadas de panecillos y también quedaron encantados con su elección.
El precio de la comida de este puestecillo es bastante asequible (menos de dos euros las salchichas individuales y cinco euros el menú doble de curywurst con patatas fritas) aunque si quieres kétchup o alguna otra salsa con tus patatas fritas tienes que pedirlo y abonarlo aparte.
Ah y no te olvides de que si planeas visitar este lugar, no lo hagas en domingo o día festivo ya que esta cerrado!

Having never been to Berlin but knowing all there is about currywurst (what can I say? I love sausages!) I was sent here by a native Berliner.
Located under the U-​Bahn, this food stand was established in 1913 and is known as a Berlin institution: always a long line, the ladies operate the place like a well-​oiled machine and speak to you in German. Minimal English except for mayo and ketchup so bust out the sign language! ;-)
If there is a language we Unilocalers know, it’s the language of food. Their fries are golden yellow and crispy, while the sausages are fresh and plump. Make sure to dump curry ketchup (and mayo!) on it. It was the perfect cheap snack to fill our bellies with, before the beer drinking that ensued at Pratergarden nearby.

Anthony Bourdain, you’re a jerk.
If you like the taste of microwaved hot dogs and tart ketchup with whatever old powders you find in your spice cabinet, this place is for you. Sorry that sounds nasty but this place is overrated.
We watched that show and sought «the best of the best», traveling many miles to get to this little shop under the bridge. End result was disappointment. I was expecting flavorful sausage and tasty curry sauce but yep — nope!
Go here if you want to say you tried it, but I found it cold and depressing.

La queue à tout heure le prouve: c’est un excellent imbiss qui se trouve là, juste sous le métro d’erberswalder strasse. Des super currywurst servies ultra rapidement, et délicieuses, à manger debout ou dans la petite salle aménagée juste à coté.
Il faut tester la salade de pomme de terre, tellement bonne!
Si vraiment vous avez adoré, ils proposent même des T-​shirt et tasses à leur marque… Si ça c’est pas la classe?

Bah franchement, pour une saussice-​frites mangée sur le pouce, c’est au top!
Les frites sont délicieuses, saupoudrées de curry ou de paprika, les saucisses excellentes coupées en p’tits morceaux avec une tonne de ketchup (qui semble êtres fait maison mais j’suis pas sur).
Temps d’attente 23,52 secondes!
En plus ils ont un petit abris aménagé pour s’assoir et manger vite fait.
Peut importe l’heure, si vous passez dans le quartier, arrêtez vous! :-)

The ultimate Berlin locale for currywurst, which much as I try, I just can’t enjoy. But lucky for me, Konnopke’s also has some damn fine brats and fries.
Situated right under the U-​Bahn, this place has been an institution for well over 80 years. It may look like a snack bar, but the staff are well dressed and they take the business of sausages seriously.
Like the best of Berlin, a full meal is dirt cheap. I’d be astounded if you could even top 5 EUR for a sausage, beer and side of fries. Oh, and for the love of Brussels, get mayo on your fries and skip the ketchup!

Oh, how I miss this Imbiss! Is it wrong of me to fantasize about eating a Konnopke’s Currywurst while I’m eating Currywurst elsewhere? I’d like to think not, because in my humble opinion, no other place in the world rivals the Currywurst at Konnopke’s.
Their plump and succulent Wursts are sliced up and covered in Konnopke’s special spicy curry-​ketchup. A side of hot, crispy Pommes Frites topped with the optional mayonnaise pairs well. Oh, and don’t forget the beer! A Currywurst meal isn’t complete without a cold, refreshing German beer. Now, Guten Appetit!
I’ve eaten at Konnopke’s before and after its renovation. The results of its make over are a brand spankin’ new exterior and murals painted alongside the stand, as well as additional shaded dining areas — no longer do you have to eat your food inside tents.
Konnopke’s should be a stop on every traveler’s list if they plan on visiting Berlin, because a visit to Berlin without trying Currywurst is incomplete. Give this savory Berlin street eat a shot, and make sure you do it at Konnopke’s.

C’est ici d’après beaucoup d’allemands que l’on trouve les meilleures curry wurst de la ville. On y a vu des célébrités et même des ministres faire la longue queue lors des heures de repas ou avant un match du 1. Fc Union Berlin.
Je commande une saucisse avec une grande portion de frite à la dame pas franchement agréable pour un peu moins de 5EUR.
C’est un peu un déception la saucisse est bonne, mais pas exceptionnelle par rapport à celles que j’ai déjà eu l’occasion de goûter. En cas de queue trop importante je vous conseil de vous rabattre sur le snack sous la station du U2 à Eberwalderstrasse, toute aussi bonne et moins prisée.
Point positif pour les frites par contre qui sont délicieusement grillées et saupoudrées de curry et paprika (?)!
