Kater Holzig

While researching for good dance clubs in Berlin, Berghain consistently came up first, followed by Kater Holzig, a close second. As any other tourist, my partner in crime and I ventured out to Berghain only to be turned away like most other people. Fortunately, after a short cab ride, we were at Kater Holzig dancing the night away.
Good:
— There several areas playing slightly different music (mostly EDM).
— Drinks were relatively inexpensive.
— Lots of eye candies and the token eye broccolis were straight up nasty. They even smelled like rotten a broccoli.
— Saw a guy who looked to be in his seventies dancing away on the stage. Such a badass!
Not so Good:
— There was a bouncer that determined who could and could not enter. The way they chose was pretty random so beware. As a reference, a group of American tourists (all girls) were denied entrance.

Came here on a saturday night at 23:00 and was impressed from the moment I entered with the doorlady saying the cover is «what I feel like paying». Never heard that before but it was pretty awesome.
They play good techno/​trance and there is sand everywhere. Its located right along the river with a huge seating area in the sand with a ton of recliner chairs which was super relaxing & nice.
Its a great place to go to, I’d describe it as a super cool outdoor beach bar/​lounge/​club all rolled into one. The vibe is very friendly and the party goes till late. Beers are only 3 – 4 €. I haven’t been to many beach bars in Berlin yet but this will be hard to beat.

Ein schöner Club. War 2 mal dort und zwar meist morgens oder am frühen Abend. Tür hab ich als gewohnt miesepetrig empfunden. Musik ist nicht immer sie Beste gewesen, aber war dennoch nicht schlecht. Würde wieder vorbei schauen, allerdings nur zu bestimmten Zeiten.

So my friends and I decided to ask our bike tour guide for recommendations on places to go out to in the night time. He gave us a whole list of places locals like to go to and one of them being Kater Holzig. An interesting tip that we got from our fellow tour guide from Berlin is that do NOT dress up to go out. We loved this advice as it is very characteristic of the alternative/​grunge/​low key culture in Berlin.
Being located on a random, very calm road near the river, Kater Holzig is a pretty hard place to find in the night time, especially if you have never been there before. If it wasn’t for the line of taxis in front of it, we probably would have never found it.
When you first walk in, you’ll notice that Kater Holzig has an open space, buildings that look torn down with rat décor and weird wooden creatures around it. So we walked in, and knocked on the wooden door. Being three obviously American tourists, we were asked by the bouncer where we were going, which we replied «kater holzig.» We truly felt as if he was asking us to determine whether or not we can get in or not.
We paid the cover charge, walked in and noticed that there is a dance floor that played the same soft electro beat on repeat. Everyone is dancing to the music and having a good time. Loved the ambiance of the place, very chill. If you didn’t want to dance, you can easily hang outside and enjoy a smoke.
Definitely recommend this place to all tourists who want to party like a true Berliner.

Unreal. Truly worth visiting if you are looking to experience true culture in while in Berlin.

OK I stumbled across this place on a Monday evening after I rode my bike past it and heard the thumping beats and faint flashing lights from the street. I was drawn in and since I had no idea what this place was, it felt like a night out at Burning Man coming across a party. There were people out front chatting and smoking and the little shack was ensconced in smoke with beat flowing out and the silhouette of people dancing inside.
I ended up going in and there was a really good vibe. Turns out most of the people there were dancing still from Sunday night so a bit cracked out of a crowd, but hey that still reminded me of Burning Man. Anyhow, I met some awesome fun folks and even got added to the guest list for later in the week when I returned. That’s when I realized that I was only in the «Kiosk» front shack and that there’s a big old club behind it too.
There are various rooms and it gets pretty crowded on weekends and feels more like a lot of clubs with less a local vibe and more a full on party vibe complete with non-​locals. Still a good time and great beats.

It’s alright. You’ll enjoy it with a good attitude, and how can you not have one with so much to dance too? It is a bit crusty but the staff are good. Remember to pay it forward with respect — the only time I have generally seen americans having problems over here is they were just disrespectful to begin with, assuming too much. Remember: the money isn’t real, but respect is!
I myself had a good time.

This place is crazy, one room is with techno music the other with a theater show and then you find yourself in the middle of a hot jazzy berlin jam session, it’s exciting!

La soirée idéale! Après qqes verres dans un bar de Berlin nous filons au Kater Holzig. Un endroit Typish Berlin! Très bien pour nous les touristes à la recherché d’une bonne dose de berlin /​clubbing plus ou moins underground. Bön j’insiste sur le plus ou moins car même si l’endroit ressemble en effet vaguement à un squat /​immeuble abandonné avec ses tags partout il y a tout de même un videur à l’entrée et parait il que l’entrée est assez selective. Mes amis berlinois nous ont bien demandé de né pas trop parler français à l’approche du club car le lieu justement né veut pas devenir le nouveau Berghain n’attirant uniquement qu’une clientèle de touristes en mal de sensations à berlin.
Bref pas si authentique mais tout de même un très chouette endroit pour faire la fête.
Plusieurs salles dont une minuscule qui ressemble plus à un sauna qu’à une piste de danse. Une salle avec un groupe en live qui a mis le feu puis une salle plus «électro» comme on dit mais je n’y connais rien. En été il y a une grande terrasse au dernier étage qui ajoute encore plus de charme à cet endroit. Etant en plein hiver la terrasse était fermée lors de ma visite.
Côté boissons on s’est laissés tenter par un maté — vodka, très désaltérant, parfait pour ce type d’ambiance!
Evidemment aux toilettes c’est la cohue il vaut mieux s’armer de patience car Berlin oblige certains groupes restent des heures… Berlin reste berlin mais en ce qui nous concerne ce club nous a beaucoup plu même sans ça!

«OHA OHA», das war meine erster Gedanke, als ich diesen Sommer das erste (und bisher einzige Mal) ins Kater Holzig gekommen bin. Gegen 10.30 Uhr schlugen meine Arbeitskollegin und ich auf, um an einer Tech Conference teilzunehmen. Wir waren also zum arbeiten da. Der Typ der sich vor dem Eingang an seiner Bierflasche festhielt um nicht beim Schlafen von der Bank zu fallen, hatte wohl eher zu hart an seinem Pegel gearbeitet… Bis in die frühen Morgenstunden war vorher eine Party im Kater Holzig gewesen und die Veranstalter hatten sichtbare Mühe, die letzten Opfer aus dem Gebäude zu kehren :) Kein Wunder bei der Grösse des Geländes und den ganzen verwinkelten Räumen.
Die Location ist wirklich einmalig und jeder der zu Besuch in Berlin ist, sollte mal im Holzig vorbeischauen. Insgesamt gibt es glaube ich 3 oder 4 Räume auf mehreren Etagen, eine Dachterrasse und einen Innenhof der das Zentrum des Ladens bildet. Für eine Konferenz war es der perfekte Ort! Networking im Freien, bei Sonnenschein oder Paneldiskussionen auf verschiedenen Bühnen. Hut ab vor dem Organisator.
Ein Boot-​Shuttle gab es an dem Tag auch und so konnte man direkt aus dem Holzig eine Spree-​Tour machen und es sich gut gehen lassen. Ob das Boot immer da ist? Keine Ahnung, cool wärs.
Leider kann ich das Kater Holzig nur aus der Sicht eines Konferenzteilnehmers und nicht aus Sicht eines Partygängers beurteilen, aber ich bin mir ziemlich sicher, dass einige Leute den Laden mehrere Tage nicht verlassen :)

AMAZIIIING !
We went there on a saturday night, there was 2 totally different concerts (kind of musical jazz and the second was indian cythare…) We just can’t get bored because there are so many to do and see ! The mood is crazy, people are really fun… All the paints of the walls are really great… I recommand it to have a perfect view of Berlin night life !

Kater Holzig is an incredible club, especially if you’re a tourist who’s looking for something at the core of Berlin’s clubbing scene.
I’m unsure about this club’s history since I’m not a massive fan of techno or house. Nevertheless, I absolutely loved Kater Holzig. We would often wind up here on nights out since it was close to our apartments, and was a bit more favourable to the surrounding nightclubs. While Tresor is more in-​your-​face, and when Berghaim’s strict door policy is impenetrable, Kater caters to a wider audience.
Even if techno isn’t your scene, Kater’s large courtyard is great for socialising. The design of the club is nuts — there are rooms all over the place which offer different music, and sometimes host gigs. At times it looks like a circus, and is an exciting maze to explore for the first time. The lighting and ambience are bright and interesting — and really hard to describe!
Once you get past the security staff — which, in typical Berlin fashion, display an icy exterior — and if you are not put off by the «we’re too exclusive to let you take pictures» nonsense, it’s a warm, welcoming and chilled out place to dance the night away.

Awesome place. Only in Berlin can you find multiple bars, indoor outdoor restaurant, a screening room, an indoor and outdoor dance club right next to a river and the place is bangin’ all night long. A must visit if you really want to check out the local Berlin party scene.

Überhebliche Türsteher, Klappe die… oh Gott, ich weiß nicht mal die wievielte. Ja, viele Bars und Clubs wollen sich an der Tür gerne ein wenig aufspielen, damit der Hype angefeuert wird und der Nervenkitzel an der Tür, ob man denn nun reinkommt, erhöht wird. Das mag bei Läden wie dem Berghain ja noch fast legitim erscheinen, wenn es aber ein Sonntag Nachmittag ist, frage ich mich wirklich, was im Kopf eines Türstehers vorgeht. Zahlreiche Male, ob nun früh morgens um 7 oder nachts um 2, nie hat es auch nur eine Kontrolle des Persos gegeben, gerne aber mal né Taschenkontrolle. Macht auch Sinn, damit kein Mist reinschmuggelt wird (natürlich wird aber allerhand Zeug reingeschmuggelt, was auch die Taschenkontrolle als fragwürdig und ineffektiv erscheinen lässt). Wenn ich aber nachmittags hingehe, wo ohnehin nichts los ist und werde gefragt «Wo willst du hin?» — «Na ins Kater Holzig.» — «Weißt du denn, wo das ist und warst du schonmal hier?» — «Äääh, ja, ich stehe gerade am Eingang und ja, war schonmal hier.» Und dann gemustert werde, noch eine andere selbstgefällige Person mitmustert und ich doch reingelassen werde, um dann zu merken, dass sogar zahnlose Menschen (kein Witz, keine Übertreibung, wirklich Leute, denen sämliche Frontzähne fehlten) hier drin rumschwirren und eindeutige Druffis, die gerade ihren Rausch ausschlafen, kann ich mich nur fragen, ob ich nicht reinpasse, weil ich noch alle Zähne habe, oder ob ich nicht reinpasse, weil ich nicht bis zum Anschlag druff bin. Wie auch immer, ich sollte mich wohl geschmeichelt fühlen — war aber zugegebenermaßen eher irritiert.
Ansonsten ist der Kater eigentlich ganz cool mit mehreren DJs, Zugang zum Wasser (ob man allerdings nen Köpper direkt vor nen vorbeifahrenden Kahn machen sollte, ich dem zugedröhnten Hirn selbst überlassen), langsamen aber nettem Barpersonal, gechillte Abhäng-​Spots und insgesamt sehr vielen Stolperfallen. Wenn man mal né Weile neben dem roten Zelt in der Mitte saß, das mit Seilen abgespannt ist, sollte man man mitzähen, wieviele sich nahezu strangulieren, weil sie Hals zuerst ins Seil laufen, sich fast die Zehen brechen, weil sie mit FlipFlops an den Seilen und Verankerung hängenbleiben, und wieviele sich die Zähne ausschlagen (ahaaaaa, daher also zahnlos!), weil es sie Gesicht zuerst auf den Beton schmettern.
Man sollte es sich schonmal geben, und wenn man zum Sonnenaufgang gucken an die Spree will. Die 10 Euro Eintritt, die es meist kostet, sind es schon Wert.

I consider a stop at Kater Holzig an absolute must before you leave this city. The venue is massive with a central common area for socializing, and music on the edges of the party. This creates an interesting atmosphere in conjunction with the art and lighting throughout the space. Very unique.

I love Berlin. Hadn;t been back for 3 years. It’s not for everybody. But there’s something to be said for going out at 4 am and staying out till noon, esp when you can be so close to the water. I have to say that this place, about blank, and renata are the re-​definition, berghain continues to be berghain, watergate now sucks, and de visionaire has changed a bit but may well still be heaven.

Kater Holzig is terrible. Stood in line for half an hour to get into what looked the the tourist ass-​end of the world. As soon as I reached the entrance a selector justed looked up and down and me and said «NO!» for wearing a white shirt…
Social discrimination of the worst kind.

Sehr szenig, aber nicht nervig, tolle Atmosphäre. Das Essen ist für Berliner Verhätlnisse im gehobenen Bereich, aber sein Geld Wert. Sehr gute Qualität, nicht ganz alltäglich, aber auch nicht überkandidelt. Solide Weinauswahl. Leider konnten bei meinem Besuch die Desserts nicht mit den Vor– und Hauptspeisen mithalten. Da gibt es noch was zu tun!

After Bar 25, we have Katerholzig! Fun sweaty people, cheap booze, good sound system… and that stuffy unventilated feeling that makes people seem to want to party more. If you need some air though, there’s some outdoor seating. For the beautiful Berlin summers on the river (but don’t go in the Spree, ew!) Katerholzig is a fun place… I can’t wait for summer!!!
