Pints a preços justos e staff sempre simpático.

I was told by a friend that the IDS bar(in the Institute of Development Studies building) is the«adult» pub on campus. Three of us went to check it out for a few evening drinks and were quite impressed with the mellow atmosphere and cheap prices. The bartender was not the usual type seen pouring drinks — as one friend noted, «It’s like my Nan is serving me!» The service was very friendly and charming, adding to the low-key mood of the evening. I’ll definitely return when I’m in the mood for an after-dinner drink without having to shout conversations across the table.

This place is a well kept secret amongst staff and students of the University of Sussex. It has the cheap prices of the student union bars East Slope and Falmer Bar, but a sleeker interior with — shock horror — clean tables and cosy sofas. They do real ales and yummy grub too. The bar is technically part of the Institute of Development Studies which is financially separate from Sussex uni, hence why you wont learn about it in university media. I only discovered it in my fourth year at the uni when some professors invited us for post-conference drinks there. If you live on campus this is a great place for a still informal but slightly more civilised and intimate drink between friends.

IDS Café(part of the Institute of Development Studies) is with out doubt the best place to get lunch on campus. The café is independent from the Student Union and has a really good chef– they actually serve something other than jacket potatoes and paninis– it’s amazing! Good food on campus? Who knew? Not me. Unfortunately, I only discovered IDS after I had graduated and started working on campus, meaning I struggled through three years of seriously mediocre campus dining. I don’t wish to exaggerate– IDS isn’t gourmet, but they do make nice, hearty, warm meals using fresh ingredients and always have a meat and a veggie option. They usually have one or two main hot meals served with salad or chips, and they also have quiches and sandwiches too. I recently had a very tasty veggie lasagne, which really hit the spot! The staff are friendly and the prices reasonable– a main meal will cost around £4. IDS is popular among graduate students, staff and faculty, making it a nice and slightly quieter place to go if you fancy a change of scenery away from the hustle and bustle of Falmer Bar.
