A very good selection of ales, very well kept; nice atmosphere; no/minimal use of the TV for sport(good); no food(good when you just want a pint); dogs welcome(not relevant to me but some may wish to know); beer festivals at least once a year which are always brilliant and have a huge selection of ales; friendly staff. Currently a favourite. sometimes you have to filter out the«music»(current manager is clearly a big rock fan) — not always — but between the Stan(great but full of people eating) and Devonshire(now a sports bar, albeit one that still serves ale) I’d say it clinches the top of Ulverston for fans of a relatively peaceful pub with real ales.

The Swan Inn is on the edge of Ulverston, but difinitely worth the walk. The landlord of The Swan is serious about real ales and how he keeps them. The pub is regularly in the CAMRA Guide. Last time I went in there were eight real ales to choose from. Access to the pub is via a ramp or steps, and the garden is reached by a slope to the side gate, but there is no disabled toilet.
