I used to be a quite a Pizza Express Regular, then I discovered Zizzi’s directly opposite and fell in love. Hence I thought it was about time I returned to Pizza Express, in order to give a more current and fair comparison. There is nothing wrong with Pizza Express, no one was rude to me, the food was quite nice but I found the service a bit slow and no one went out of their way to crack a smile. Given that it was a Monday night and they were fairly empty, they seemed more inconvenienced that seven of us wished to dine, than grateful for the custom. The menu could also stand to be a tad more extensive. I know it’s an Italian and you’d be mad not to expect a large majority of the menu to be dedicated to Pizza and Pasta but a few meat based alternative dishes would be greatly appreciated, especially when one is dining with their grandmother who loudly informs the waiter that she does not like pizza or pasta.

I had read the absolutely awful review but still carried on there as I didn’t know the area and had faith in the Pizza Express standards. We had no problems at all, it was a busy Thursday night and yet the service was spot on. There were 2 eastern european waiters who seemed to be keen to provide the traditional professional waiter service often lacking from UK restaurants staffed by kids. The manageress(I assume as not in uniform) wasn’t afraid to help out either. Nice venue with airy high ceiling and decent acoustics. Food was faultless too.

Yeah, this is one of their better places. I’m pretty anti — chain but credit where credit’s due, this is always reliable, well located on the High Street and is found in a tastefully converted building. I suppose I’ve no real issue with a restaurant that is part of a chain if that chain has grown through people liking them & returning time after time as opposed to the ones that set up on borrowed money & roll out some awful ‘business model’ everywhere. The menu is what you’d expect it to be and the service professional: I love their Veneziana pizza & usually follow with the cheesecake dessert. A good second or third best to Firebelly’s on Mt Ephraim or the real Italian joints on Camden Road.

Nicely reliable. You always seem to get the same experience in any Pizza Express. Nothing out of the ordinary, but at the same time, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Can be a bit crowded at times, especially if you get seated upstairs, but if you get there at the right time, you should be okay. The pizza is generally good, and the doughballs delicious. Generally recommended if you want to pop out for a quick pizza, and not break the bank.

I like Pizza Express, its reliably good with a nice range of pizzas on its menu andis excellent value. However the venue isn’t brilliant for this one in Tunbridge Wells. Its along the High Street, but is often very overcrowded. They put too many tables in and last time I was there I was seated next to the door, which was constantly opened so it was very cold. Its very noisy and because the staff are serving so many people, the service is pretty lousy. If you went at a quiet time, it would be find, its clean and bright like your typical Pizza Express — but for an evening/weekend meal, I’d go to ASK as a better alternative in Tunbridge Wells.

Pizza express has been a standard in the UK for over 40 years and has had good times and bad. I stopped going to their restaurant in Tunbridge Wells a couple of years ago because it was always full of kids(normally having parties) and therefore very loud and a bit chaotic. Also the pizzas seemed uninspiring. However, I thought I would give it another go a couple of weeks ago and it has changed enormously. It is now more like a wine bar and indeed a very knowledgeable waiter directed us to a very nice wine at a very reasonable price. The next nice surprise was the menu. As well as the old favourites there are now a vast array of pizzas which tasted as good as they looked on the menu. And no kids in sight.
