whoooo hoooo! a proper chippy near our home, an amazingly delicious proper chippy, an outstandingly good proper chippy that sells home made pies and quite honestly, outrageously massive vanilla slices, an incredible proper chippy that serves gigantic haddock pieces, parceled up in bubbly, thin, tasty and well cooked beautifully formed and non-greasy batter, a fantastic proper chippy that produces chips that taste how chips should taste, that has peas perfectly mushy and a normal shade of green, that has a proper history of fish and chips, that has a bus parked outside to sit in and eat, that has a picnic area for canalside alfresco eating and did I mention the HUGE vanilla slices? I need this place in my life and I cannot believe it has taken over 16 years for us to go there. My proper chippy cravings have finally been sated, oh and can someone bring me a vanilla brick slice please?

Near me there are no ‘proper’ chippies, we have lots of Chinese chippies(Who lets face it do awesome Chinese food, but the ones near me have never mastered the art of batter for fish). But no traditional English chippies, and by that I mean ones that cook things like they do by the sea, crispy bubbly batter and chips that taste like chips. Now, as much as I like fish and chips i’m not one for driving an hour to Blackpool for some(Not helped by the fact that I detest Blackpool these days). But i’d been told about Grandma Pollards a few years ago and as myself and Mrs Z were at a loose end the other day we thought we’d give it a try. First off the exterior, the front just looks like any other chippy/chippy restaurant, but round the back it is a different story. Not only can you eat your food in a parked up bus, they also have a picnic area right by the canal(see pics) and a lovely spot it is too! Being boring we decided to eat inside the plaice(see what I did there?) and we both opted for the same food namely jumbo haddock, chips and mushy peas, or to give it’s real name, food of the mythical sky beings… Large haddock said the menu, and bloody large it was too, it was hanging over the side of the plate large. It was also really, really lovely, the batter was crispy and bubbly in equal measure and the fish inside was soft, flaky and tasty. The chips did indeed taste of chips and the mushy peas were also of the top notch variety. Grandma pollard also sells home made pies(none of that Hollands mush) and their own cakes, and even though we were incredibly stuffed from our fish feast we decided to get a couple of pies and a brick sized vanilla slice to take home with us, all of which were very nice, especially the vanilla slab! I am now very happy because i’ve found a proper chippy that is not too far away from home, and at the end of the day that’s what’s important in life, a proper chippy!

My favourite chippy in the world. As usual I had the haddock, chips and mushy peas, as usual it was superb. You even get a scallop on top which makes it for me. The seating is unique, you can either be conventional and eat in the restaurant or eat in the bus. Yes this must be only place I’ve ever been to where you can eat in a bus. Family owned and it shows, it really is a gem. Only downside is parking can get a little tight but nothing can detract from this wonderful place.

…This is probably the best fish & chip shop in Yorkshire, and maybe even the whole of the North West! In February 2008, it was awarded 5 stars * for ‘food hygiene’. The shop has been going for 50 years, & ‘Tony’ the owner developed his passion for good — ‘old fashioned home-cooking’, by watching his Parents(the original owners). The food is home-made on the premises & customers can choose from a range of pies, rag puddings, & of course, fish & chips!(Small portions available & children are also catered for). People travel for miles, just to sample the cuisine & if you have room, you can also indulge yourself with one of the home-made sweets that are available, also. There are dining-in facilities & there is even an old ‘Bus’ at the back — where you can go & sit in & eat. On a nice day, you can even go & sit by the Rochdale Canal & eat, where a few tables & chairs have been placed. …but watch out for the ducks!!! This is a very busy & popular shop, but the staff are very friendly & organised, so your wait is minimal. And at least your food is being cooked, as you wait — so you can guarantee that it will be fresh & hot. …I love the fish, with chips — and they will also give you ‘scraps’, if you ask for them! They will also, provide you with warm plates & cutlery —
