Fitzgeralds

Simply the best pub to be found in the town centre, Fitzgeralds has an excellent selection of real ales and whiskies– there is also an extensive selection of chilled lagers and ciders if you are not a fan of proper beer. Staff are really friendly and chatty, avoiding the usual soulless atmosphere that can be found in many of the pubs in the town (yes Lambton Worm, I’m looking at you). Be warned tho, this is by far not the cheapest pub in the city, and if simply getting hammered on as little money as possible is your goal, look elsewhere. Food selection is fairly limited-​this is by no means a gastro pub– however the food itself is of a good overall standard and the service is prompt.
Overall, if you are looking for a decent traditional pub atmosphere with decent drink selection and eclectic clientele (students and staff from the local university often frequent the place along with locals) then this is the place for you.

This pub is by far my favorite in Sunderland. There is an good selection of drinks, including various ciders, whiskys, largers, and real ales, good food, and great premisies. The ales are constantly changing, and very varied. For any Camra member (like me) there is a discount on the ales on production of your card. There is also a loyalty card for the ales. They also regularly hold brewery nights, where they bring in several ales from the same brewery. The food selection is good. Several panini/​baguettes, pub grub, and freshly made sandwiches (£2.50). The prices are all reasonable, and the food tastes good. This is one of the few places in Sunderland with a beer garden, and its in the sun all day, so definatly worth a visit when the sun is out. When its not, the inside is fairly big, with compfortable chairs, two bars, and plenty of tables. Fitzgeralds shares a road with several bars/​clubs, but manages to attract a more mature clientel, and avoid the majority of the clubbers.

The pub always has a good selection of drinks. The food is fantastic and the staff are really friendly. It is a nice laidback pub. All round a good night (or day).

Great beer and atmosphere as expected. Not the greatest overall menu, but the chicken curry is well worth going for.

Fitzgeralds suits people who like their ale, hate loud music and just want a decent pint in a good old fashioned pub. It gets really busy on a night, but is nice busy rather than being unable to move. It has a nice beer garden to the back whihc is pleasant in the summer. It has loads of real ales and belgian beers available. One of my favourite pubs in town

Superb selection of real ales and they change regularly. The bar menu is not too adventurous, if you don’t like chips or cheese there is not a great choice. Pleasant atmosphere attentive staff and very clean and tidy.

This is a great spot for a quiet drink. The crowd in here is generally more mature than some of the other bars so you aren’t surrounded by people out to just get hammered. Prices are reasonable and there is a good selection of real ales if thats the drinks you are into.
