Double Four Records

Wonderful review dongbeats, sounds like you want to punish this shop for the decline of indie pop or pop music itselfwill look forward to your reviews of other shops as they were 20 years ago.
The scene has altered, the net changed everything, and this shop has managed to survive against the odds. If you’d actually been in the shop more than once in the last twenty years you’d know the bargains and interesting stuff is still to be found, it’s just a matter of waiting and/​or digging it out. I recently got a great Dylan bootleg from there for an indecently cheap price. And yeah, what a terrible shame we can’t get hold of Pop Will Eat Itself and KLF records anymore, what a total f#####g tragedy, what cultural deprivation, oh the humanity.

Over time I feel Double Four transformed from being an exciting little indie record store, where you’d discover all sorts of new music– especially in the 99p singles section, to being a slightly tatty second hand record store just selling forgettable mainstream ‘nothing’ music. The pretty out-​of-​the-​way location at the top of Hillgate lent itself to the former rather than the latter and in the end it wasn’t really sure what it was aiming for. If only it still sold Pop Will Eat Itself T-​shirts and fairly rare KLF 12s.
The other thing I’ll remember from when I went to Double Four regularly was the dust. So much dust! Even the new stock was inexplicably covered in dust.
I’d only recommend this shop if you are capable of time travel.
