I travel a lot, and use a mixture of Pure Gym and The Gym Group to work out when I’m on the road. I’ve trained at a fair few of both, and this is not great. Broken lockers, limited equipment and an odd layout that has all the cardio machines circling the limited number of weight machines in the centre. I’ll be trying one of the other 3 or 4 in Brum before coming back here.

Pure gym came out of nowhere and soon you find one in every city and in my case i have 3 within a 10 mile radius. I signed up to this gym simply because it is 24 hours and it helps with those rare cravings to hit the gym late night. Fitness first which is the main gym I use closes by 10pm so this is my backup gym. All the pure gyms I have been to are always equipped to the roof with cardio and fitness machines but they always lack in free weights. This gym is no exception, the free weights section is crap, there are not enough benches and the crowd that comes here really does not have the manners to not hog. This pure gym is a bit of a community gym, a lot of familiar faces will be seen here and it was a great location here which got a lot of people who would otherwise never have joined a gym, get off their asses and come here. The biggest downside is probably the large majority of refugee types/asylum seekers which this area is full of, also attend the gym because of the cheap rates. They just do not possess gym etiquette So using a machine or bench after it has been sweated on and not wiped down becomes off putting. Oh and only one water cooler right by the entrance, really could do with a few more around the large gym area.

I have been a member of this Pure Gym for over year now and it really has everything I need. First the important things out the way. . It’s no contract, 24 hour at £18.99 a month with a £25 joining fee. Although the gym does have open weekends where you can try the facilities and occasions when the joining fee is waived as an incentive to join. The inside is spacious with an abundance of machines. I have been at peak times and haven’t had a problem getting on machine. The weights area is usually always pretty packed but what gym isn’t? What I love about this place is that there are many classes that are free of charge to all members. They do everything from spin, to boxercise to circuit training. A few of the classes do endure a fee so keep your eyes on that. The lockers operate with a pad lock. You can bring your own or there is a vending machine selling them along with other essentials you may need for the gym. To gain entry, you are emailed a PIN code which you tap in at the entrance and exit. Even though I come to the gym regularly, I still haven’t memorised mine! I like how there is a suggestions box to which they do listen and implement changes. This gym does have personal trainers which you can approach if you require extra sessions. What I love about them, is that they don’t accost you every 2 seconds like they have in previous gyms I have been a member of. Its nice to know they are on hand if you have a question or need advice. This also has a massive free carpark which was a massive draw for me. I can’t think of many gyms which can offer this service!
