I’m from the States so I don’t get here often but I’ve been there several times in the past 3 years. Every time has been friendly. The pints are good, the sports are on but not overpowering. There’s a nice, comfortable area in the back with comfy chairs. Free wifi got me there the first time I was in town — the pub itself keeps me coming back.

The hop and friar has recently undergone a bit refurbishment project which saw it shut for quite some time and, it seems to be struggling to get customers back in. I went out there one saturday after getting a curry at the nearby masala and there were three other people in there whereas in any other bar on a saturday night you would have to queue to be served. the staff were nice enough but seemed bored and it is regularly shut some evenings without much pattern. Is a nice enough bar but I wouldn’t go out of my way to get to it for fear of being disappointed and wouldn’t spend the whole night there due to lack of atmosphere.

The Hop and Friar is a fantastically quirky little pub, tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Shrewsbury town centre. It tends to attract a younger, more stundenty type of punter but visitors of all ages will be made to feel welcome here. It’s friendly and relaxed and not the sort of place to worry about dress codes. The staff are friendly, service is quick and the prices reasonable. The décor makes it a fun and interesting place to visit and the funny signs on the toilets are also a talking point, just watch out for the one that’s haunted! It’s also perfectly located for a quick drink pre or post walking around the quarry.
