If you don’t fancy fish ‘n’ chips from next door, this cute and cosy café will warm your cockles after a walk up Howgill Fell. You can get a good sized full English breakfast here for under a fiver, as well as snacks like paninis, toasties, sandwiches, tea and scones and more. I’ve been here twice now and both times have had a very pleasant experience. The lady who runs the café is friendly, as are the locals who pop in for a coffee and a natter and don’t mind making conversation with non-locals too. Something you certainly don’t get in cities! I like to sit by the window and have a perfect view of the locals and tourists meandering down Main Street. Nothing complements an early morning breakfast like a spot of people-watching.

Enjoyed the fish cooked to order, good quality chips with tantalising bits of batter in them. Special offers done on monday and wednesday. Have been to a lot worse than this, all in all a good quality chippy

This is our local ‘chippy’ and I think to be fair it’s about average really. There is a very small shop with a counter where you can order takeaways and an eating area in the building alongside. It helps to know the ‘system’ if you go in for fish and chips as you are supposed to tell the man straight away what fish you”ll need so he can start frying it ahead of time. Then when you reach the head of the queue your chip and mushy pea requirements are added and — voila! — your takeaway is ready. The chips aren’t too bad but could be a bit crispier and fluffier and the fish tastier — but it’s no worse than a lot of other chip shops and the prices are probably the same as elsewhere. If you tire of chips the shop also sells pizzas and beefburgers.
