This is Sedbergh’s only restaurant so thank god it’s a good one! Taj Mahal has now changed its name to ‘Aamijah’ after changing hands, but still offers the same high quality Indian cuisine at reasonable prices. What I like most about this place is that the menu features a wide selection of lesser known Indian dishes, most of which I’d never even heard of before. So if you’re tired of tikka masalas or bored with bhunas, you can be a little more adventurous at Aamijah. I ate at Aamijah twice in one week(I know, I’m a greedy so-and-so) and both times opted for the exact same meal because I’d enjoyed it so much the first time round. I can’t remember what the main dish was called but it was delicious. On the back of the menu there are a handful of the more well-known curries if you’re not one for trying new things. The menu offers an array of mouth-watering starters and of course, the obligatory pickle tray(mmm… mango chutney…) and there’s a separate dessert menu for those with with a sweet tooth. But fill up on poppadums, naans and your main meal and it’s very likely you won’t have room for anything sugary. One thing to bear in mind about this place is they don’t serve alcohol BUT pop a couple of doors down to The Dalesman pub and the bar staff are generally quite happy for you to buy your drinks there and take them over to the restaurant, as long as you bring their glasses back. Aamijah is a small but clean and modern restaurant with friendly staff and an excellent choice of food that won’t break the bank. I will definitely be returning soon.

An Indian restaurant and takeaway hidden away above a café on Main Street, the Taj Mahal isn’t bad at all. Having been spoilt for choice when previously living in Manchester and having so many Indian restaurants to choose from there, I admit to being quite fussy. While the Taj Mahal isn’t the best place I’ve been by any means and some of the dishes are a bit too bland and sweet for my taste, there are some good ones to choose from. The place itself is quite mysterious as you wouldn’t know it was there — quite a huge room tucked away at the top of a winding staircase reached from a side entrance. Service is good and I will definitely return.
