Just stayed at the Valley Bar in the beginning of September 2010, thoroughly enjoyed my stay there, very quiet, clean, accommodation, extremely reasonable prices, very pleasant staff and management. I stayed for £11 a night in a double en suite room by myself, and roamed round the town for my food which is extremely practical if you are there to sight see as I was, huge oysters in lemon juice or tabasco sauce on the foreshore from the stalls by the lifeboat station for breakfast set you up for the day and if restaurants aren’t your thing you can eat very well by stocking up on essentials at the local Sainsburys etc., or in the local market builiding a few minutes from the foreshore. The famus ‘Pepperpot’ Rotunda Museum featuring geological and archaeological exhibits and the art gallery are just down Valley Road(the latter being up by the Crescent on the left. The choice of real ales and ciders is excellent, myself I settled with ‘old goat’ real cider at 7.4%, £2.85 a pint, well worth it, it certainly had a certain gravity to it which commanded some respect from my brain, I must say that I took drinking that at a very gentle pace, as it was not the sort of stuff to guzzle down, having a rather distinctive effect on the mind. The Valley Bar is extremely well placed to enjoy a good walking tour of the town, you won’t need to use the buses or taxis as it only takes a few minutes to walk anywhere, enjoy great walks to Horseshoe Bay and further if you like at low tide, and do some fossilling and find yourself some nice carnelian or red jasper, maybe collect some lovely little mother of pearl shells(but check first that they are ones that are not currently occupied by little hermit crabs, you can always see the pincers lurking in the occupied ones), go the other way along the foreshore and around the Marine Drive and up through Peaseholme Park. The Esplanade is a very superior walk, up by the Clock Tower, see the wonderful architecture and visit the iconic Italian Gardens and the Rose Gardens, buy vintage postcards of the place on St Nicholas Cliff at the collectors shops. Without a doubt the best quality ale in Scarborough served by the most competent cellar person I have ever met. John and Linda have built up a solid reputation amongst the tweed jacketed, ponytailed CAMRA brigade but don’t let that detract. An ever changing list of ales with two constants. Over a 100 plus Belgian beers on offers as well as National award winning ciders and perrys. They are trying to get the kitchens up and running again which can only be a good thing. The only slight down side of this place is that to enter you have to walk the gauntlet of the filthy smokers who gather outside the only door and spread their smog. They should be encouraged by the staff not to stand at the door

A great pub — small but with a good, friendly atmosphere. Belgian beers seem to be a speciality here — there are a few rare types on the beer menu, and also there are British guest beers and a great range of ciders. On a nice day you can sit outside at the front.
