Cup of tea was fine, but the staff seemed ill prepared to handle a credit card transaction.

Formerly this beautifully restored building was divided into two separate restaurants, but both floors of The Custom House now share the same menu. The picturesque setting is matched by tasteful interior design and a warm and relaxing ambience, perfect for family meals and special occasions. Once seated, the views of Cardiff Bay are unmissable through the large windows, with the large circular tables and natural lighting generating an eloquent atmosphere. After ordering a round of drinks, guests are ushered towards an impressive glass counter displaying a broad selection of fresh meat and fish. The menu is displayed on large chalk boards, with customers selecting their desired starters and mains in this enjoyable, albeit slightly unconventional, manner. This process provides an extra element of authenticity to the dining experience, with the mouth-watering selection of food on offer sure to excite most. The food is of a high standard and is presented in as professional a way as one would expect given the quality surroundings. Furthermore, the customer service is faultless, simply adding to the thoroughly enjoyable experience The Custom House provides. Highly reccomended, with the prices representative of the quality provided. Vegetarians may struggle with a lack of choice, but aside from that, there are very few negatives.

The Custom House near the barrage in Cardiff bay is an impressive looking building that houses a couple of restaurants that come with just as an impressive reputation. I must have gone there on a bad day(it was a few years back) because the meal was ok. I had steak and chunky chips and the chips were not really up to it! Which left me thinking: if they can’t get he chips right, what hope is there? i take back the bad day thing because the rest of the people I was with seemed to have nice meals — maybe the chef didn’t like the look of me. All of that aside i would go there again(even though I haven’t) as the place’s interior certainly extends the look and feel from the outside. It is a little pricey but you do feel you are on a proper evening out when you come here.

The Old Custom House combines two excellent restaurants at Penarth Marine, overlooking the barrage and Cardiff Bay. I recently took the Waterbus over from the Bay to Penarth(£4 return) with a couple of friends, and discovered this place. We had a quick drink(Pimms & lemonade, of course) and then headed back. But even that quick visit left a lasting impression. The staff were very welcoming, which was nice because upon immediate impressions, this is quite a classy joint. But everyone is welcome here and there were even a number of families enjoying food and drinks. Also, my friend ELLIE(who didn’t want to be named) though that the establishment was called ‘Erected’ because of a sign in the stonework that said the building was erected in year !!! Oh, how that made us laugh. I will certainly be going back again to sample some of the cuisine here, as I hear only good reports.
