An Oxford institution, I suppose. The ice cream is great and I can’t fault it. The prices are pretty standard for such places and the flavours available are quite exciting. I would have given four stars, but I had a bagel here once and it was really bad. Stick to the ice cream — it’s really nice!

This is a really nice place to treat yourself! They have very high quality icecream in a wide range of flavours, If I had to find a complaint it would be that I had too many choices! It took forever to finally make a decision. Bu it was worth the wait! Don’t come here if you are on a diet, but I reccommend it to everybody else!

The space: Large and comfortable. They probably don’t have the best design, when it comes to ordering though. Many people standing in a staggered line, hoping to get noticed so they can order. The Ice-cream: The ice cream is good. Not too sweet and well made. Has a good cream ratio and good options. Would I wait in line for it, probably not. Do I think it’s worth the price, not really. I’ve had really good ice cream, like salt n’ straw from Portland Oregon and they win hands down. The bagels: okay this is where my three star rating comes it. The bagels are really expensive and not worth the price. 4.45 for a bagel with some cranberry, brie and bacon, really? Am I missing something, are your bagel’s made from gold? After trying this place twice and really wanted to like it, I just can’t. I’m just not impressed. The bagel was well made though but after the price I paid, I don’t think I can bring myself to doing it again. Sorry :(

The vanilla with Carmel with hot fudge was really good. My daughter had a pizza bagel prior to getting ice cream and said it was really flavorful.

Ice cream here is pretty average! I learned after I ordered that only the flavors on the board were the ones that were made fresh in the store. I would reccomend the oxford blue flavor ice cream and stay away from the oreo flavor(spoiler alert: it doesnt taste like oreo). The place was packed when we went so expect long lines on a nice day!

The coconut ice cream was my favorite. The double chocolate was just fine. But it had that slightly bitter taste you find in cheap supermarket chocolate ice cream which was disconcerting. I find the texture very creamy and the waffle cone was good. It certainly hit the spot. W/C downstairs for patrons.

I personally have really enjoyed the G&D’s in Oxford. One reason, aside from the general quality of the food, is the fact that it’s actually open past 5:30. If you’re looking for a quick snack, a small meal, or some delicious ice cream, I would recommend any of the G&D’s!

Delicious ice creams and hot chocolate. The waffles looked amazing! Too bad we had already eaten. This is a cute little café to make a quick stop at for an afternoon snack. As cute as it is though, their washrooms were in a horrendous state.

#507 After catching an orchestral performance at the Sheldonian, I was up for something sweet. So, the boyfriend suggested walking over to G&D’s for some ice cream! What a good call. Thankfully, we got there right when the earlier sweets crowd headed out, so it wasn’t too full. Our orders took a little while to put in just because the people in front of us were rather indecisive yet specific about what they wanted. After I ordered a double scoop of double chocolate and the boyfriend went for a combo of strawberry and mango sorbet, we found ourselves a two-seater table by the fireplace. The flavors were all very distinct and I loved how creamy the texture was. I definitely see myself trying out the rest of their menu, as well as giving their waffles and pizza a go. Actually, I was also seriously craving their salmon & cream cheese bagel offering that night, so I might drop in for that as well. Definitely a great ice cream location!

I would say this is is my 2nd favourite G&D’s over all but my favourite internally. There isn’t a whole lot of seating considering the popularity of the place but as a plus they do have seating on the basement level that some people may not know about. For me it just seems the perfect size for a G&D’s and well located in a good section of ST. Aldates and if you are a tourist, not far from Christ Church. I used to frequent this location quite a bit back in 08⁄09 and while I cannot say for sure their sandwiches are great currently, they were great back then. My most recent trip here within the last couple of months yielded G&D’s wonderful ice cream satisfaction without fail and if I lived closer to the City Centre I would frequent this location far more often.

Love the ice cream from this place(and the two other stores). They often have different flavours than you might find in other stores and the ‘flavour petition’ folder is a stroke of genius. Personal favourite is After Eight flavour. On a sunny day, go and get an ice cream then wander through Christ Church Meadows. (They sell other food too!)

I find myself going back here even though the service moves at 1mph. I’m sure it’s not a great place to work since it gets so rammed but, seriously, sometimes you wonder if they even give a toss. They charge a ludicrous £5−6 for a breakfast bagel, which you’d think is justified on the basis it’s eat-in, but sometimes it feels more like never-eat-at-all. In fact they often look like they’re making them from an instruction manual. One Sunday afternoon I waited 25 minutes for a bagel. If you think I was mad, you should’ve seen the confused Italian tourists who were ahead of me in the queue — and in fact I got served before them! The whole time we could of course see them making it, and we were all watching in a sort of mystified wonder at how slow they were going. It was almost like a protest against our custom. No apology or anything to any of us when they finally arrived, of course. Seriously, some of the guys are nice but they seem to have a high turnover of staff and I think it shows. On the plus side, of course the ice cream has a well-deserved reputation and it’s a nice place for a sweet splurge. Loads of flavours and I recently discovered that the cookie desserts are huge and this is a nice place to go for a coffee on a quiet afternoon. It’s also open really late for an Oxford café, so it has a distinctive post-pub appeal. But I’d rather go to the one on Little Clarendon Street.

An Oxford classic with a well-deserved reputation. The tea-room is spacious and comfortable, the coffee excellent and the trademark ice cream delicious.

Ice cream was a definite must-have when I came to Europe. I was so happy to find this when I came to England because I could not find one in my Berlin neighborhood. The employees are nice, and the ice cream was delicious — I believe I had the chocolate chip. It’s a nice hang-out spot as well.

So I just posted a review of the G&D’s on Little Clarendon, and then I found the other review here for the G&D’s on St. Aldates. First of all, I know exactly which independent ice cream shop in Berkeley that reviewer is talking about because I referred to it too! Amazing. High five to her. Anyways, here is my review, which is basically… the same thoughts as the other reviewer. We SF Bay area people are just too spoiled. Why is there so much hype about G&D’s in Oxford? Oh, because food in Britain is crap/average unless you’re willing to dish out more than 60 pounds. Look, the ice cream is ok, but it definitely does not deserve the hype. I have to disagree with the other reviewer on the texture though; the texture is too icy, and not creamy enough. Flavours are very average, and not that creative. I would rather sit at home with a tub of Green and Black’s vanilla ice cream(which by the way is amazing). If you’re ever in San Francisco, go to Bi-Rite Creamery in the Mission or Ici in Berkeley. Then, you’ll know what REALLY good ice cream tastes like.(no surprise here given that innovation in the U.S. is far more active than in Britain… you can even tell it in the ice cream…)

The line seemed perpetually out the door at G&D on many of our warm afternoons in Oxford. Though we may have wanted ice cream after a lovely afternoon picnic with Pimms and Lemonade on the river, we just couldn’t brave the line on many of the days. We ended up going one evening around 11 when the line had mostly dissipated. My friends said this was the sort of place that did small batch ice creams of inventive flavors. My initial thoughts were balsamic strawberry, burnt caramel, honey lavender, chocolate basil – the staple flavors I’m used to at my independent ice cream shops back home in Berkeley/San Francisco. I was excited. But after looking at the menu, I was a bit disappointed. A Rum Cognac concoction, a subtle blueberry, a crème anglaise – these were not inventive flavors. These were standard flavors I could find at any ice cream parlor any time of day back home. I ordered a small crème anglaise and it was different. The flavors were light and ice cream itself was so much richer than what I’m accustomed to at most places. It wasn’t dense, but any more than that would have been far too heavy. I understand why this place is popular for it’s texture, but for the flavors, I’ve had more interesting experiences elsewhere.

G&Ds is an Oxford institution. A lovely little café in two locations that serves great snacks, particularly bagels, but can be lauded above all else for one thing — its ice cream. Made on site, the favourite flavours — Oxford Blue, Dime Bar Crunch — are all winners. But they don’t stop there. Seasonal favourites, monthly specials and even a petition which allows anyone to suggest a flavour that the shop will make(and you must taste) if 20 people agree with you. The Aldates branch is best for brunch or lunch, during the daylight hours when St. Aldgates has people huffing up and down its hill, laden with books or groceries or running for a bus. For the café has a huge people watching counter, and you won’t be able to leave without someone singing Tom’s Diner at some point.

An ice cream shop and café with all manner of gooey delights and healthier meals. The good bits: — Mondays: Hoop Night — throw a cow through a basketball hoop and win a half litre of ice cream! — Tuesdays: Silly Hat Night — speaks for itself! — Free newspapers and more importantly, The Beano! — Offers such as BOGOF on coffees before 10am and refills — Cookie monsters — 2 giant cookies(get them warm for ultimate mmm factor) with ice cream of your choice sandwiched in-between. Smother in hot sauce if you don’t value your teeth. — The ice cream: Jersey cream from a nearby dairy, all natural. Flavours: Oxford blue After eight Dime bar crunch Mars Mania Flavour of the week: 30 signatures in a petition folder can lead to some bizarre flavouts! The bad bits: — See above — some combinations just do not work! — Service can be slow, especially at lunch time — Price of the bagels — £3? Not unreasonable for a café, but you can get a huge baguette at Taylors for less than that. — The ordering system — you pay then sit down and they call out your order later. I’ve seen people take the wrong things before — very traumatic!

Great ice-creams made without any artificial colours, flavourings or preservatives. There are lots of flavours, all the usual ones and plenty of unusual flavours as well. They also do bagels and cakes but I’ve only ever had the coffee and the ice-creams. The atmosphere is friendly but they get busy at lunch times. Perch on the stools at the window and watch the world go by or read the newspapers and magazines provided. They are open 8am till late in the evening. This has been a life saver when I’ve been stuck waiting for a bus with tired children after 5.30pm.
